Sustainability is No Longer Optional for Suppliers

SOURCE:Toronto Sustainability Speaker Series

DESCRIPTION:

With several governments internationally developing and implementing Climate Change, Circular Economy and Zero Waste Policies, global firms are already taking a proactive approach to supply chain risk management, while others are taking a riskier “wait and see approach”.

On the retail side, leading companies have identified supply chains as a critical risk in this area and are developing more stringent sustainable procurement policies and criteria. On the producer side, organizations will need to ensure more sustainable supply chains, design, and packaging in order to maintain competitiveness.  These new, circular business models are driving the purchase of sustainable materials, products, and services. At the same time, environmental requirements are increasingly being included in supplier contracts.

Walmart – Leading Retailers in Circular Supply Chain Management

For companies like Walmart where a large proportion of carbon footprint comes from suppliers, sustainability targets not only encompass their own operations but also their vast global supply chain.  In December 2016, the mega-retailer joined several other major retailers and producers in becoming a member of Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Circular Economy 100. As such, the organization has committed to a more circular business approach to supply chain management.

Walmart is now planning an even tighter sustainable supply chain management system that will screen and engage suppliers. This will encourage a more circular and sustainable design of products and packaging, mitigate regulatory and reputational risks, and capitalize on cost-saving opportunities.  This will also mean an even closer focus on greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), improved packaging efficiency, reducing waste streams, water conservation, and ethical sourcing in order to reduce overall environmental and social impacts.

The latest circular economy initiative builds on Walmart’s Supplier GHG Innovation Program that achieved a reduction of 20 million metric tons of CO2 from its products’ lifecycles and supply chains between 2010 and 2015. With an eye on further reducing ‘Scope 3’ emissions through its supply chain, Walmart has set a target to reduce emissions by 1 Gigaton by 2030.  In addition, other retailers like Loblaw’s and Costco have implemented sustainable sourcing strategies that seek to ensure that their supply chains are economically, environmentally and socially sustainable.

For producers to maintain market access to Walmart and other retailers, it will be essential to develop new circular business models that encourage resource, GHG and cost efficiencies across life cycles – from design and sourcing to manufacturing, to distribution, to use, to recovery, to reuse and/or disposal.

Leading Producers Taking Action

At Unilever, who is also part of the Circular Economy 100, the sustainable supply chain program extends across 200,000 different materials and over 160,000 suppliers who work with up to a million smallholder farmers.  The consumer goods giant claims to be on track to reduce its carbon footprint by 40% by 2020.  Above all, the organization has demonstrated that sustainability can drive revenue generation. By reducing their overall environmental impact by one-third, the company grew from €40 billion to almost €50 billion in revenues with an increase in operating profit of approximately 5%.

Unilever has also recently committed to ensuring that all of its plastic packaging is 100% reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025 and has called on the entire consumer goods industry to join them in adopting circular economy best practices.

Other producers such as Coca-Cola and Dell have adopted a circular economy model and supply chain management best practices that can capitalize on cost reductions, reduce risks, increase brand reputation and revenue growth across operations and supply chains.

Sustainable Procurement Policies and Standards

The more stringent procurement policies of Walmart and other retailers is expected to create a domino effect across the consumer goods industry. This trend is accompanied by other drivers like new regulations as well as consumer and investor pressures.  As such, producers will need to begin placing further focus on supply chain management in order to monitor sustainability risks and opportunities. In a recent study by BSR/GlobeScan’s State of Sustainable Business Survey, 84 percent of respondents said they had a supplier code of conduct, and 61 percent said they considered sustainability in sourcing strategies.

In addition, ISO 20400, the first international standard for Sustainable Procurement, is currently being finalized and due for release later this year. The latest ISO effort will build on current standards like the British Standard 8903 and the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply (CIPS). It will provide best practice guidelines for organizations to integrate sustainability in their procurement processes.

Amidst existing and forthcoming regulations, new international standards and stakeholder pressures, producers will need to consider more circular business models and delve deeper into their supply chains and product life cycles in order to meet increasingly rigid standards for transparency and disclosure related to sustainability, and access to markets.

Students dream up art to impact the behavior of millions of visitors.

SOURCE:Subaru of America

DESCRIPTION:

by

How do you design art that illustrates the importance of recycling in a universal language? In a place like Grand Teton National Park, where there is opportunity to impart teachable moments on visitors from around the world, Jackson Hole High School students are tackling this challenge.

Digital Fabrication Lab, or “FabLab,” is a JHHS elective program that teaches students how to envision, design, and make innovative projects. Led by FabLab director Sammie Smith, four levels of classes are offered each year. The second level class teams up with Jackson Hole Public Art to create projects with community impact.

Fabulous collaborations

JH Public Art’s artist/instructor/ambassador Bland Hoke, Jr. connected the FabLab students with a project spearheaded by Subaru. The car manufacturer is a “zero landfill” company, meaning it sends none of its waste to landfills. For the national parks’ centennial year, Subaru reps wanted to bring that zero landfill concept to the parks and see what could emerge.

The PRI and the UN Global Compact call for more sustainability around Corporate Pensions

SOURCE:United Nations Global Compact

DESCRIPTION:

New York, 20 April 2017 /3BL Media/  – The leaders of the world's two largest corporate and investor sustainability initiatives today called on CEOs to ensure their corporate pension plans – an untapped sustainability area – adopt responsible investing policies – highlighting concrete benefits including improved investment performance, fulfilling fiduciary duty and managing regulatory risk and boosting corporate sponsor credibility.

According to a guide released today by the UN-supported Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) and UN Global Compact, CEOs should ensure plans mirror their own sustainability values.

Aligning Values: Why corporate pension plans should mirror their sponsorsincludes case study examples from major corporate pension plans showing how companies have taken steps to make their plans sustainable. It also gives five steps a CEO could take to ensure their plan invests responsibly, such as signing up to the PRI.

The guide aims to mobilise an important investment sector that has remained largely dormant in terms of advances in sustainability practices. In the US alone private-sector Defined Benefit plans held USD $2.9 trillion assets at the end of 2016. The global industry is estimated at many trillions of dollars.

"While significant numbers of institutional investors and corporations are now integrating environmental, social and governance factors, corporate pension plans remain a sleeping giant", said Lise Kingo, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director, UN Global Compact and Fiona Reynolds, Managing Director, PRI. "And when we consider the capital that will be needed to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, the multi-trillion-dollar corporate pension industry needs to be activated to join other actors in private finance that have aligned to the 2030 Agenda".

Kingo and Reynolds noted that of the 1,700-plus signatories to the PRI, less than 50 are corporate plans.

In an effort to address this imbalance, Kingo today called on the CEOs of corporate signatories of the UN Global Compact, in their role as sponsors, to encourage their associated corporate pension schemes to adopt the PRI principles, recognising that pension scheme decision making is independent of a plan's sponsor.

"We strongly believe that corporate plans need to align with their sponsors' sustainability philosophy", said Kingo, "otherwise, investment decisions will be out of step and could actually be undermining the stated aims of the sponsoring corporation's strategy".

Reynolds added: "The evidence and proof now abounds: adopting responsible investing practices is not only consistent with fiduciary duty, it unlocks financial and social capital over the long term. Failing to address ESG and sustainability factors poses material risks to any pension plan".

About the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI)

The PRI is the world's leading proponent of responsible investment. It works to understand the investment implications of environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors and to support its international network of investor signatories in incorporating these factors into their investment and ownership decisions. The PRI acts in the long-term interests of its signatories, of the financial markets and economies in which they operate and ultimately of the environment and society as a whole.

About the United Nations Global Compact

The United Nations Global Compact is a call to companies everywhere to align their operations and strategies with ten universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption, and to take action in support of UN goals and issues embodied in the Sustainable Development Goals. The UN Global Compact is a leadership platform for the development, implementation and disclosure of responsible corporate practices. Launched in 2000, it is the largest corporate sustainability initiative in the world, with more than 9,000 companies and 3,000 non-business signatories based in over 160 countries, and more than 70 Local Networks.

Global Food for Thought: Guest Commentary by DuPont’s Krysta Harden

SOURCE:DuPont

DESCRIPTION:

Today, guest commentary from Krysta Harden, DuPont Vice President of Public Policy and Chief Sustainability Officer, has published a post on The Chicago Council on Global Affairs (CCGA), Global Food For Thought blog. Confronting Our Biggest Challenges: Innovation and Collaboration Will Drive Food Security, was submitted in advance of Harden’s participation on a panel in the upcoming 2017 Global Food Security Symposium hosted by the CCGA.

Here’s a portion of the post from Global Food For Thought:

Having served for most of my career in the public sector and now with one year of private sector experience at DuPont, I see now, more than ever, the importance of public-private partnerships. I firmly believe we can leverage the leadership and innovation that a company like DuPont wields to establish a responsive and sustainable agriculture industry that helps address our food security challenges.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), feeding the world’s growing population will require a 50 percent increase in total agricultural production by 2050. We believe that when confronted with a challenge of this scale—and urgency—all stakeholders need to work together to create a more sustainable food system that achieves solutions which are:

  • Integrated and holistic: land use, water and energy efficiency, ecosystems and biodiversity are all interrelated and need to be considered holistically in developing solutions.
  • Focused on local impact: solutions must support local communities, enhance livelihoods and assure social and economic value to those connected to the food system.
  • Collaborative: food and agriculture is a system, so we need to take a value network approach. Collaboration among all stakeholders, big and small, is essential if we are to bring sustainable, scalable solutions to the market.
  • Innovative: product, technical, process, and business model innovations will all be required to realize a more sustainable food and agriculture system.

Together, these principles will help us create a more sustainable approach to food production. Innovation is a requirement for us. We must help lead the way.

Strengthening the link between the private sector and academia to close the skills gap

SOURCE:PYXERA Global

DESCRIPTION:

The American Dream has always been fueled by opportunity—the opportunity to create a life better than your parents had, the opportunity to reinvent yourself, the opportunity to live out your fullest potential. The American Dream is tightly woven into the fabric of our country; inextricable from what it means to call oneself an American. But the American Dream is facing a new challenge, and if not addressed properly, millions may lose out on the opportunities America has always afforded her people.

Currently, more than 5 million jobs are sitting unfilled in the United States because employers cannot find qualified talent to fill them. Approximately half of employers are having trouble filling critical positions, and more than a third report not being able to take on new business due to a workforce shortage. This skills gap between what employers need and what job seekers are prepared to do is growing—estimates top 6 million unfilled jobs by 2020. And yet, millions of Americans are still looking for work but cannot find a steady position due to a lack of in-demand skills. This hits young workers particularly hard, with 5.5 million youth ages 16 to 24 out of school and work.

Dutch public-private partnership to improve life in mega-cities

SOURCE:AkzoNobel

DESCRIPTION:

April 20, 2017 /3BL Media/ - Founded by AkzoNobel, the Human Cities Coalition (HCC) brings together more than 150 stakeholders and 20 partners, such as Arcadis, Philips, ABN-AMRO, the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Slumdwellers International, to focus on realizing Goal 11 of the United Nation's 17 Sustainable Development Goals: sustainable cities and communities. Ton Büchner, CEO of AkzoNobel will officially kick off the Human Cities Coalition today with stakeholders across business, government, NGOs and academia.

Büchner: "One billion people are currently living in slums around the world, and that number is expected to rise to three billion in 2050 as a result of rapid urbanization. AkzoNobel has made cities more liveable and inspiring for years through our Human Cities Initiative. In 2016, we reached more than nine million people. The Human Cities Coalition is a way to make an even bigger difference in society, build sustainable partnerships and generate business opportunities and innovations at the same time."

Sheela Patel, Chairman Slumdwellers International: "This is the first time we collaborate with the private sector as we believe that this coalition will really bring the voice of the community to the table."

Inclusive bottom-up approach

The ambition is that millions of people living in slums will benefit from this public-private collaboration. Poor sanitation, slum housing, inadequate basic services and flooding are making megacities unliveable. HCC will focus on building liveable cities together with its partners and address these challenges. HCC recently started work on two pilot projects in Jakarta, Indonesia and Manila, the Philippines, and will then scale up and expand to more cities.

HCC acts as a catalyst for new innovative solutions, financing mechanisms, basic services delivery and better inclusion of grassroots organizations in urban planning. Using a novel approach in the field of inclusive and sustainable urban development, the coalition will connect bottom-up and top-down processes. HCC invites urban communities to participate as equal partners, and build scalable, commercially viable solutions together with the private sector. Furthermore, HCC aims to use a blended finance model to attract public and private capital. Fleur Henderson and Ronald Lenz, Directors of HCC: "We distinguish ourselves from other urban initiatives by the large role of the private sector in our coalition. We are convinced this will have an enormous impact on the livelihood of the poor"

Building liveable cities together

The HCC launch centers around the theme: "Building liveable cities together". The event will include a keynote from Büchner who will speak about working together to improve life in slums, Jan Peter Balkenende, Chairman of the Dutch Sustainable Growth Coalition and contributions from panelists such as Christine Musisi, Director for External Relations of UN-Habitat and Gert Kroon, CEO of Arcadis in the Netherlands. More information about the program is available here.

In late March, members of Arrow Electronics’ recruiting team took part in the 43rd Annual National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) Annual Convention held in Kansas City, Mo. The event attracted undergraduate and graduate NSBE students majoring in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, making it one of the largest gatherings of STEM talent across the U.S.

With more than 31,000 members, NSBE is a student-governed organization. Its mission is “to increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community.”

This year’s week-long convention drew an estimated 12,000 attendees, more than 250 exhibitors and featured hundreds of workshops and roundtables. For Arrow recruiting, the event serves a dual purpose: First, it helps the company further develop a diverse base of STEM candidates. Second, it gives Arrow the opportunity to hire up to five interns from the event.

Representing key functional business areas like digital technology, marketing and university recruiting, Arrow’s participation underscores the company’s commitment to innovation and to shaping a diverse and inclusive global workforce.

“Partnering with organizations like NSBE helps us further our goals of promoting organizational diversity in our internship programs and across our business,” said Vera Stamenkovich, human resources vice president at Arrow. “By meeting and engaging with these exceptionally talented young engineers, we can help them embark on innovative and rewarding STEM careers so they can help shape the world of tomorrow.”

Sustainability HP Reinvents Every Day to Make Earth a Better Place

By Nathan Hurst, Chief Sustainability & Social Impact Officer, HP Inc.

SOURCE:HP, Inc.

DESCRIPTION:

Planet Earth. It’s home to more than 7.3 billion people and millions of identified species of animals, insects and plants.

A scientific wonder, the Earth provides the natural resources, such as water, air, and soil, that allow all living creatures on the planet to survive—and thrive.

But today Planet Earth and its inhabitants are at risk.

According to independent analyses conducted by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), 2016 was the warmest year on record globally and represented the third record year in a row. The analyses noted that the rise in temperature is being driven primarily by increased carbon dioxide and other human-made greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

For HP, lowering GHG emissions across its product portfolio, operations, and supply chain is part of the company’s long-term business strategy and represents its commitment to support the United Nations’ climate agreement signed in Paris in December 2015.

Reducing the impact of HP's products

Founded in 1992, HP’s Design for Environment program has defined how HP develops products that use less energy, require less resources to make and use, and are more easily reused and recycled.

One area of focus is electricity consumption, which represents approximately 70 percent of the GHG emissions associated with the use of HP products. Through design innovations, HP has reduced the energy consumption of its personal systems portfolio by 25 percent, its HP LaserJet portfolio by 56 percent, and its HP inkjet portfolio by 20 percent since 2010.

This innovative spirit continues with recent product offerings, including the newly announced HP PageWide Pro A3 multifunction printers, which have best-in-class energy efficiency when compared to comparable laser printers. And these design advances support HP’s goal to reduce the GHG emissions intensity of its product portfolio by 25 percent by 2020, compared to 2010.

HP’s efforts were recently recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency, which honored the company with a 2017 EPA ENERGY STAR Award for Excellence in Energy-Efficient Product Design for its commitment to improving the availability of energy-efficient products in the marketplace.

Designing a circular, low-carbon economy

Today HP is building on this legacy of sustainable design by reinventing product design, business models, and industry supply chains to create a more efficient, circular and low-carbon economy.

Through these efforts HP is helping decouple growth from consumption by developing solutions that enable the company and its customers to keep materials in use at their highest state of value for the longest possible time. These solutions also require less resources to make and use and are more easily repurposed at end of use.

For example, the HP Elite Slice is a compact, yet powerful desktop solution that is smaller in size compared to older ultra-slim desktop towers, which means it requires less materials. At the same time, it consumes 50 percent less energy than a comparable small form factor desktop, which significantly reduces its carbon footprint.

HP is also shifting to flexible service models, which provide real value to customers while reducing waste and costs, extending product lifespans, and increasing reuse and recycling. HP Instant Ink, a consumer-based subscription service, is a great example of this new model. The service ensures that customers never run out of ink when they need it, while helping them lower their environment impact. It reduces costs by up to 50 percent and lowers the carbon footprint related to ink cartridge purchase and disposal by an estimated 70 percent.

And HP is transforming how whole industries design, make and distribute products by helping people create products in a more efficient, economical and environmentally conscious way. For example, its commercial digital on-demand printing can improve efficiencies and reduce costs and waste by better matching supply and demand. In one case, a book printer and publisher found that on-demand printing helped the company cut inventory by 28 percent, reduce warehouse space by 19 percent, and bring 1,100 titles back into print.

Innovating across the enterprise

At the same time, HP is taking steps within its operations and supply chain to reduce its overall carbon footprint. This includes incorporating resource conservation into its day-to-day operations, such as implementing smart building technology in its facilities to identify operating inefficiencies, and shifting to less GHG-intensive energy sources.

This work is reflected in a pledge HP made in 2016 to achieve 100 percent renewable electricity usage in its global operations. And it supports a commitment HP made in February 2017 to reduce the GHG emissions from its global operations by 25 percent by 2025, compared to 2015 levels. This new commitment builds on two previous goals HP set and achieved to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions from operations.

Similarly, within HP’s supply chain, personnel work with suppliers to reduce their overall carbon footprint. For example, HP has partnered with BSR, World Wildlife Fund China and World Resources Institute to bring the Energy Efficiency Program to its suppliers in China and Southeast Asia. The program promotes energy efficiency initiatives and enables suppliers to share best practices.

The program has already helped more than 200 supplier sites cumulatively save more than 500 million kWh of electricity, 800,000 tonnes of CO2e emissions, and an estimated $65 million. These types of results helped HP achieve an industry-first goal to reduce the GHG emissions intensity of first-tier manufacturing and product transportation in its supply chain by 20 percent by 2020, compared to 2010 five years ahead of time.

HP’s sustainability efforts are driving the company’s vision of engineering amazing technologies that make life better for everyone, everywhere—and create a healthier world that can support the lives and livelihoods of generations to come.

Earth Day and Managing the Clean Energy Transition

$

SOURCE:National Grid

DESCRIPTION:

Because it falls on a spring day, it’s easy to mark Earth Day as a time of sunny, optimistic renewal.  It’s become traditional to plant trees, clean up parks, recycle, and reduce energy.

But for the 50 percent of Americans living paycheck to paycheck, including many of our own customers in New York, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island, it’s just another day of trying to make ends meet.

The past three winters have been difficult – a polar vortex, record snowfall, and a tough economy – and New Englanders paid about $7 billion more on heat and electricity than they should have.

The cost, source, use, and reliability of energy has a big impact on their lives, yet existing market practices and energy policies often fail to benefit them, resulting in missed opportunities for economic progress.

So this Earth Day, we have a great challenge: How do we transition to a clean energy economy and maintain affordability and reliability?

National Grid has an opportunity to reassess the way we connect with our customers and, in turn, shape energy policies and market practices that will better meet their needs and reflect their distinct economic, regional and demographic differences.

What can we do differently to better serve our customers? They clearly want more value, more simplicity and more choice. What actions can be taken to achieve these goals? Some that come to mind are:

  • Greater affordability of electricity: How can National Grid reduce the cost of power?

  • Access to natural gas that is cleaner and cheaper: How can National Grid get that to them?

  • Greater customer control over the management of their bills, including more payment and pricing options: How can National Grid, by itself or in partnership with financial services companies or others, provide that?

  • Green energy sources: How can National Grid better provide that, and how much of a premium are customers willing to pay for it?

I am encouraged by the major industry players I see raising their hands to find solutions. More and more are coming to understand that there are good economics around going green, beyond it being the right thing to do. Our opportunity in energy is to be true customer advocates, and I see that happening through lower bills, cleaner energy, and job creation. How does that macro vision translate to micro stories in the communities we serve? There is actually a lot of economic benefit that comes with having a large utility in your backyard.

For one, National Grid brings billions to bear in local investment – $15 billion over the next five years, in fact. And that’s just in infrastructure upgrades. This number does not take into account the state and local taxes we pay, the jobs we provide, and the capital we will invest to move our systems into the 21st century – with the proper regulatory support, of course.

Remember, we’re not selling widgets. We’re transporting energy – a volatile commodity whose needs must be met with 24/7 oversight. I can only speak for National Grid, but as a multinational energy delivery company with a hyperlocal customer focus, there are a number of examples of clean energy leadership I’m proud to lean on.

Our new approach to large-scale solar in Massachusetts is one of them. By strategically targeting installations – more than 20 megawatts of solar panels in projects across the state, with 15 more megawatts on the way – National Grid is looking to provide additional energy to communities that need it when they need it, vastly improving the value of solar projects to customers.

And the local economic benefit? In addition to the powerful impact these installations will have on the energy grid, projects like these create jobs in our communities and, in some locations, help to transform marginal existing space into something far more beneficial. Further, solar projects will provide information to help us determine if infrastructure can be retired and removed in certain locations. That’s a triple win—lower bills, cleaner energy, and more jobs.

Our industry’s challenge is to make sure no customer or community is left behind as we transition to a clean energy future. When we look for solutions to move our company to that future-state, affordability is the prerequisite. From the wealthiest communities, to places like Buffalo, New York—the third poorest city in the nation—we must serve ALL people, despite their economic status. That is why our solutions to a clean energy future must be the right ones, the first time.

Climate change threatens nearly every aspect of our society. From health, food supply, businesses, the environment—all the way up to national economies and security. Our industry, and the U.S. as a whole, must continue to advance renewable energy sources while also lowering demand through energy efficiency. I believe we must do this while still focusing on providing affordable, safe, reliable energy for our customers.

With that mindset, it’s time for all utility companies— and our policy and tech partners—to bring the full weight of our power to bear, killing our 20th century infrastructure paradigm in order to have one that works for the 21st century, and beyond.  Progress is incumbent on a true democratization of energy that creates energy choices, supply, and security that is accessible and affordable to all.

Starting a clean energy transition together is a reason to be optimistic this Earth Day.
