Winning Videos Explore the Good Side of the Internet

SOURCE:Trend Micro

DESCRIPTION:

For the past several years I've helped judge Trend Micro's annual What's Your Story video contest, which, in past years, focused on how to combat Internet risks like cyberbullying and inappropriate use of mobile technology. But this year, the contest had a more uplifting theme. Contestants were asked to create videos that addressed the question, "What does the good side of the Internet look like?"

There were two $10,000 grand prize winners in two categories: individual (or a group of individuals) and schools. The winners in the individual category were Saad Sifate, George Strawbridge, and David Oladejo, of Ottawa, Ontario. The school grand prize went to teacher Patty Ream's class at Ripley Union Lewis Huntington High School, of Ripley, Ohio.

Individual prize

Sifate, Stawbridge and Oadejo's entry, "I'm an Educated Dude," which took place in front of a graffiti covered wall in Ottawa, consisted of a poetic rap about the pros and cons of the Internet. I was a little worried that the group might have missed the mark when the lyrics began with, "Press down Ctrl H, all I see is hate, confidence deflate and less than civil debates." But I lit up when he went on to rap, "But the forgotten message is that the Internet has a direct correlation to education communication and a supreme impact on our generation. Education is the key." What impressed me was the way the video explored the nuances of the Internet and how you can transform bad into good."The Internet is a composite and the parts that are negative are what can truly make it positive," it concluded. But my quotes don't do it justice. Click here to see the two-minute video for yourself.

School entry

The school video, "The Legend of the Responsible Gamer," begins with a teenage boy bad mouthing another online gamer "you're so bad kids, why do you even play this game, why not do everyone else a favor and log off." But then the unthinkable happens. A hand reaches out from the monitor and pulls the young gamer into another world where he is greeted by a guy in what looks like a Jolly Green Giant outfit who -- in a positive and very physical way -- teaches him a lesson in humility as they go through an obstacle course together with some positive reminders like "it takes a much better person to encourage somebody rather than bash them down."Click here to view the video.

Olivia "Bing Bing" Mann was a tiny infant with a complex, but treatable heart disease. From her home in a Chinese orphanage, it appeared virtually impossible for Bing Bing to receive the medical attention that she so urgently needed. But the London-based Swinfen Charitable Trust intervened and - utilizing the latest in telemedicine technology - was able to link baby Bing Bing with Dr. Karen Rheuben, one of the world's foremost experts in pediatric cardiology. From her offices halfway around the world, Dr. Rheuben, the director of the University of Virginia Center for Telehealth, virtually provided local caregivers with guidance on how to treat Bing Bing, who underwent the first in a series of life-saving surgeries. Today, Bing Bing is a thriving, happy three-year-old living a fuller and healthier life with her adoptive family in Pennsylvania.

Bing Bing's story reinforces that, despite the myriad of challenges facing our healthcare system today - including rising healthcare costs and the lack of quality and access to healthcare - there is a tremendous opportunity to use new technology tools to transform the way healthcare is delivered, especially to those most vulnerable - children, women and seniors - in remote or rural areas.

Swinfen Charitable Trust, a non-profit service that helps U.S. doctors offer medical advice to rural doctors in the developing world, plans to use the cloud to expand its services in countries such as India and the Philippines.

The move is enabled in part by a donation of $100,000 worth of cloud storage and $100,000 in cash, from the Verizon Foundation, which announced the aid today at a United Nations conference on innovation among non-profits groups. Swinfen says the gift will allow the organization to expand its remote medical assistance, already offered at 260 sites in more than 60 countries including China, Nepal and Bangladesh. Swinfen plans to use the donation from Verizon to add mobile and video capabilities to its service.

How Fair is Your phone?

How fair is your phone? Charlie Ashford says that gadget makers need to confront human rights issues in their supply chains.

SOURCE:Corporate Citizenship

DESCRIPTION:

Last month, Samsung confirmed that its phones contain tin from Bangka Island, Indonesia. According to Friends of the Earth, tin mining on Bangka depends on child labour, destroys tropical forests and coral reefs, and kills an estimated 150 miners every year.

Samsung has now publicly committed to helping find a solution to the situation on Bangka. Although it is far from the only company to source tin from the island, its competitors – including Apple – have so far stayed silent.

Mobile phones contain more than thirty different kinds of minerals and metals. Given complex global supply chains, it’s almost impossible to guarantee that your phone doesn’t contain minerals from regions like Bangka and the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where metals like tantalum, tungsten, tin and gold are mined by forced labour and help fund brutal militias.

What can companies do about it? The key is not to stop sourcing from these areas. In the DRC, where 82% of the population is considered unemployed, mining supports tens of thousands of people. Instead, companies need to map out their supply chains, and work to find industry-wide solutions. Initiatives like Solutions for Hope, a pilot initiative launched by Motorola to source conflict-free tantalum from the DRC, are a good start. Yet according to NGO Global Witness, phone makers are among companies lobbying against new US laws on supply chain due diligence.

This week, the Fairphone project began taking pre-orders. It may be starting small, but the project has big ambitions. Aiming to create a “smartphone that puts social values first”, Fairphone will start with conflict-free tantalum and tin, and is working towards sourcing conflict-free tungsten and Fairtrade-certified gold and cobalt. It also aims to pay workers a living wage, be transparent about suppliers and pricing, use recycled materials and make the phone as adaptable and recyclable as possible, perhaps eventually becoming fully “closed loop”.

Buying more stuff seems like a counter-intuitive way to reduce your impacts, especially on the environment. But Fairphone is definitely a step in the right direction, and looks likely to meet its target of 5,000 pre-orders. High-profile network partners already include Vodafone, O2/Telefónica and KPN.

Phone makers should be watching with interest.

Empowering Local Change: GE and Partners for Democratic Change

SOURCE:General Electric (GE)

DESCRIPTION:

Local entrepreneurs are the key to capacity-building for Washington, DC–based NGO Partners for Democratic Change.

Few organizations, global or domestic, operate in the remote tribal regions of Yemen, the most deprived areas of the poorest country in the Middle East. Here, a lack of education and services engenders a youth susceptible to violence and tribal conflicts, and competing over scarce resources makes any interaction, already fraught with tension, even more incendiary. Feuds are commonplace. Terrorism thrives; “Al-Qaeda is luring young men with offers of money,” says Wardah, a woman leader working with Partners-Yemen. “They make terrorists out of people,” she says. “Al-Qaeda will spread if we don’t learn to stand up to them.”

Rule of law is a particular challenge in areas like these, especially when the hotbeds of rampant instability are so remote. But the need to build a foundation for stability, growth and prosperity is urgent when the stakes are so high. “Development is not possible in our area until there is stability, and stability is only possible if conflicts are resolved,” says Yasmine, another leader. “People want change,” her colleague Misk continues. “But they need a guide.”

Partners for Democratic Change, a Washington, DC–based NGO and GE Foundation grantee, takes a unique approach to providing such a guide to areas like tribal Yemen that might fall out of reach of traditional aid organizations. Like other organizations, Partners promotes conflict resolution and “change management” to help bring much-needed development to remote areas—but it sets itself apart in how it fully localizes its approach to the socio-economic conditions of each country in which it has operations.

In fact, Partners’ entire model is about building local capacity and leadership; it understands that, in order to be sustainable, responses to the world’s most pressing development challenges require the input and shared commitment of government, businesses and civil society.

For Partners, the key to unlocking and mobilizing these local stakeholders lies in what they call “social entrepreneurs”—local leaders who want to build institutions that contribute positively to social and democratic change. Instead of approaching each country with static solutions in hand, Partners focuses on these entrepreneurs as catalysts, teaching them critical skills—like conflict resolution methods, consensus-building processes, and change management techniques—that they can adapt to their local contexts. These empower them to solve the complex issues in their own communities, all while being strengthened and legitimized by the global network of over 200 practitioners that Partners has built.

GE and the GE Foundation have worked actively with Partners in recent years to support these locally operating chapters, known as Partners Centers for Change and Conflict Management, through the Sustainable Leadership Program (SLP). Beginning with a grant in 2008 and continuing with a second grant in 2011, GE’s investments have enabled Partners to establish new independent Partners Centers in Brazil, Colombia, Senegal, Serbia and Yemen. Local GE staff in each of these countries help them build private-sector relationships and convene dialogues around the serious reforms that are needed in many cases.

The Centers employ more than 50 local staff members, have raised more than $12 million in additional funds from more than 25 donors to support their work, and, as members of Partners’ international network of Centers, are already contributing knowledge and lessons learned for other Centers and good governance practitioners. The funding is also now being utilized to measure the broader impact of Partners’ localized model.

“What makes Partners unique is the entrepreneurial nature of its business model,” said Karan Bhatia, Vice President, Global Government Affairs & Policy for GE. “It has been quite effective in adopting localized approaches to promoting political and social conditions that allow for economic development.,” he continued “We’re excited to learn more about the wider impact of this approach and to assess its scalability. The more we can empower local communities to promote stability from within, the more effective our global efforts to promote rule of law and transparency will be.”

The SLP is growing; Partners will establish two new Centers, in Libya and El Salvador, next. The ripple effect of channeling change through local catalysts continues to demonstrate the value of promoting personal agency and participatory approaches in advancing democratic change.

Back in Yemen, the local team focused on empowering women in conflict management and resolution efforts. Partners trained 75 women; this initial group recruited 800 female volunteers, who hosted 8,000 community meetings, which in turn reached more than 127,000 women. In Wardah’s case, the mediation skills she learned helped her defuse a tribal conflict and keep it from escalating into a full-blown feud. But there are tons of stories just like Wardah’s, which you can learn more about in the video above.

“Many women have changed as a result of this program,” she explains. “One change is that people started to send their daughters to schools.”

Mobile Literacy Program Celebrates Successful Return to Michigan

SOURCE:CITGO Petroleum Corporation

DESCRIPTION:

May 31, 2013 /3BL Media/ - During the week of May 26th, Bess the Book Bus made its way back to Michigan, with support from CITGO. Bess made stops at Harvest Elementary, Heritage Elementary and Pleasant Ridge Elementary in Saline, where more than 1,100 students were invited to pick out their very own new book to take home. This year’s visit also included read-aloud sessions for students in kindergarten through third grade at each of the three schools.

“Michigan is such a special state for us,” Jennifer Frances, founder of Bess the Book Bus, said. “There is so much enthusiasm, excitement and talent in these schools. It’s absolutely magical to see all of those things come alive through our books. We are deeply grateful to all of the teachers who helped us organize these in-school events, and we’re so appreciative for CITGO, who connected us to the schools and made it possible for Bess to make the trip out here.”

This week’s events marked Bess the Book Bus’ first visit to the Detroit area since The Eight Mile Boulevard Association (8MBA), a Detroit-based community improvement organization, and CITGO helped Frances connect with Mercedes-Benz in 2012. The introduction led to the very generous donation of a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van, which enabled Frances to continue her nationwide tour of schools, community centers and after-school programs. So far, Frances has logged 30,000 miles in the new vehicle, giving away more than 70,000 books.

“During our time in Detroit, we were so aware of the generosity and thoughtfulness of our friends at Eight Mile Boulevard, CITGO and Mercedes, all of whom really made this year’s tour possible,” Frances said. “It was such a joy to drive the brand new Bess the Book Bus through Detroit, and we want to say thank you to everyone who kept Bess rolling! This year’s tour would not have been possible without these partnerships. We can’t wait to come back to Detroit next year, and we’re looking forward to making an even bigger impact on the lives of these children in 2014.”

Founded in 2002, Bess the Book Bus’ mission is to promote literacy and provide underserved children with access to new and engaging books. Frances has grown the program into one of the nation’s most innovative mobile literacy initiatives. Each year, she and her network of volunteers take Bess the Book Bus directly to underserved communities to read to children and provide what, for many youngsters, is their first new book. Through support from CITGO and other corporate sponsors, Bess the Book Bus has covered more than 48 states, supported more than 60,000 families, and donated more than 450,000 books.

GM Rosario Complex is First GM Plant in Americas to Earn ISO 50001 Certification

SOURCE:General Motors

DESCRIPTION:

The Rosario Automotive Complex in Argentina is the first GM plant in the Americas to receive 50001 certification from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

The ISO 50001 standard acknowledges the latest best international practice in energy management, which is building upon existing national and regional standards to help companies manage their energy usage while finding opportunities to save money and administer improvements.

GM Argentina met these strict standards by training 20 internal auditors for 20 hours to give them a base knowledge of how to implement energy efficiency in the complex. The auditors then trained 70 percent of the complex’s employees on energy efficiency awareness, including contractors and suppliers who consistently work with the plant. Training the majority of the employees led to ISO auditing the processes in all five facilities that make up the industrial complex.

Worldwide, GM has demonstrated their dedication to their goal of reducing energy intensity from its facilities 20 percent by 2020. Rosario joins the following GM global facilities that have earned ISO 50001 certification:

  • Aspern, Austria
  • Eisenach, Germany
  • Gliwice, Poland
  • Rayong, Thailand
  • Zaragoza, Spain

The assembly and stamping facilities at the Rosario complex also earned landfill free status in 2011, which means no waste from daily operations is sent to landfill. Instead, it’s either recycled, reused, or converted into energy.

$1Million USD dedicated to help improve the education of children in India’s Uttar Pradesh

SOURCE:Mars, Incorporated

DESCRIPTION:

June 7, 2013 /3BL Media/ - The Wrigley Company Foundation announced the launch of a three-year, $1 million (USD) educational partnership with Pratham, the largest non-governmental education organization in India, working to provide quality education to the underprivileged children in India.  This initiative, targeted at addressing learning gaps and providing support to help close these gaps in the top mint farming districts in the Indian State of Uttar Pradesh, is aimed at reaching 40,000 children in 1,000 villages.

Uttar Pradesh is one of the key mint producing geographical areas of the world.

“We are pleased to be able to give back to these communities that play an important agricultural role for so many products we enjoy every day,” said Martin Radvan, President of the Wrigley Company Foundation and of Wrigley. “Delivering a mutuality of benefits is consistent with the Mars guiding principles, and we are proud that this program strongly amplifies this commitment and provides additional support to these children.”

“Education is one of the best ways to touch people’s lives,” said Michael Yeung, Wrigley Company Foundation board member and President, Wrigley Asia – Pacific, “and we are happy to create avenues for children in India to learn and grow through this Wrigley Company Foundation/Pratham partnership.”

“Pratham is delighted to partner with the Wrigley Company Foundation to address the needs of children of the mint producing farmers in India. Uttar Pradesh has low learning levels as shown by ASER 2012 and we hope to address these problems in the region”, said Dr Madhav Chavan, co-founder and CEO of Pratham.

ASER (meaning impact in Hindi) is the largest household survey undertaken in India by people outside the government. It annually measures the enrollment as well as the reading and arithmetic levels of children in the age group of 6-14 years.

Pratham provides educational enhancement for children aged 5-14 through a combination of week-long concentrated Learning Camps and volunteer tutoring classes between camps.  Through their commitment to long-term reading and arithmetic capabilities, they also provide colorful and age-appropriate reading material for the children to use as resources between these camps.

The goal of this partnership program is to help increase annual sustained learning, as well as engage parents to take an active part in their child’s education.  The program will be piloted in 300 villages in the first year and will scale up over the next two years, ultimately reaching the 1,000 village target.

As part of this partnership program, Pratham Books will also publish a series of “mint story cards,” which will tell the journey of mint from planting to end-product use, helping children to read while also providing a real and relevant story for them to follow.

This donation is made possible through Pratham USA, which accepts tax deductible contributions from U.S. donors to support the mission of Pratham in India to ensure that “Every child is in school and learning well.”

SOURCE:National Association for Environmental Management (NAEM)

DESCRIPTION:

This month, we introduce you to Peter Mutschler, EHS Director for CHS Inc., one of the members who helps make our network so unique.

Why did you join NAEM?
I joined NAEM to develop my knowledge of management systems and the executive’s role in EHS issues. I have spent a lot of years focusing on my own operations, and it is time to share and learn from others in the field.

What are you currently working on?
Multiple projects. Motivating and evaluating resources to make sure we have the right people in the right place and they are performing to the best of their ability. Projects that are particularly interesting to me are: improving our risk assessment system, improved benchmarking (scorecards), risk-based program cost allocation systems, and effective EHS management systems.

What is your biggest challenge in your current role?
Making sure all resources are focused on doing the right thing and making sure that is making a difference in protecting the employees and communities we work in.

What advice would you have for someone entering the field today?
Keep an open mind. I see way to many young EHS professionals coming into the field with outdated knowledge. Also, take the time to get to know the business you are working on. Knowing why things are done the way they are is a great way to start improving them.

What aspect to the natural world/environment impresses you the most? Why?
I am always amazed a different land formations, particularly the Grand Canyon because of the forces it took to shape them.

What do you like to do during your free time?
I like to watch a good soccer game.

When I submitted my piece for the 2012 Aspire Awards, it was one of more than 800 submissions produced by students from all over the globe who each hoped, like I did, to be recognized for their talent.  So when the moment came that I discovered I had won first place in graphic design by way of audience votes, I was stunned. After the shock wore off, I became deeply moved to know that my project had raised awareness about teen suicide, a serious problem that is often ignored in today’s youth.

My piece, “Alone,” represented my desire to draw attention to teen suicide prevention and engage parents, teachers, family members and friends in the effort to help address depression in youth. Teens struggling with depression often feel they have no one to turn to. By including a hotline phone number in my artwork, I hoped to give my peers an opportunity to access needed help. Although this topic had been important to me for quite some time, I was unsure how to share this message with others, prior to my involvement with Adobe Youth Voices (AYV). The AYV Aspire Awards enabled me use my voice to call attention to the problem and get support for those I cared about who were struggling with this issue. Using the skills I learned through AYV, I was able to produce artwork that would speak to others and encourage many of my peers who needed help to seek it.

The Audience Choice Award was selected via online voting by the general public. Voters, who included friends, teachers, family members and other supporters helped spread the word on Twitter and Facebook, showing their determination to share my message. Over the course of the voting period, my project was viewed more than 30,000 times! The breadth of supporters who commented on my project encouraged me to consider a career in graphic design so that I can continue to share my ideas with the world around me. My supporters gave me confidence in my own ability to create something that can help to improve the world around me and inform people who are suffering, that there is hope. Without this support, my piece would not have had a chance to be viewed and shared by so many people.

AYV has opened my eyes to my own creative abilities. Yes, I can sit in front of a computer screen and draw away, creating doodles and wasting my time but after taking part in the Aspire Awards competition, I realized my art can help me express myself and in doing so, bring attention to important issues. Taking digital graphic design coursework has given me direction and an idea of what I want to do with my life. Not only will you see my name listed for participating in this competition, you can count on seeing my name again in the future for more pieces like this and others.

I encourage you to vote for your favorite entry as a means to inform participants that their work is indeed important and worth sharing with others. The more that people become aware, the more people will understand and realize that they are the key to creating solutions to the issues facing our communities and the world at large. If it were up to me, I’d want to see fewer and fewer issues covered each year by Aspire Awards projects, so that I know that problems being publicized in this competition are being improved, all because someone took the time to show them to the world. You can bet that I will be voting for my favorite entries for years to come!

An Innovative Approach to Financing

Integrating different forms of capital to catalyze the growth of a promising social enterprise

SOURCE:RSF Social Finance

DESCRIPTION:

by Kate Danaher

Normally, when a values-driven non-profit social enterprise needs a large influx of capital to purchase property and expand its operations, it has three options: wait to raise all of the necessary funds from donors and foundations; approach a conventional lender, often a trying and unsuccessful process; or, seek funding from both sources, a time-consuming and also challenging process.

Last year, when Common Market Philadelphia, needed to expand their operations, RSF was able to assist them with an innovative combination of both debt financing and philanthropic support. This unique approach provided Common Market with the financing they needed in just a matter of months, financing they could not have received from a conventional lender.

In December of 2012, RSF Social Finance provided a $1 million mortgage loan to enable Common Market Philadelphia to purchase a 73,000 square-foot facility, now called the “Philly Good Food Lab.” The RSF lending team and Common Market’s founders worked closely together to secure the loan. Considering Common Market’s size, making a loan of this magnitude required an innovative approach including a combination of grants, guarantees, and debt financing—what we call an integrated capital approach.

When Tatiana Garcia-Granados and her husband, Haile Johnston, moved to North Philadelphia’s Strawberry Mansion neighborhood in 2002, they found themselves in a fresh-food desert. The couple started working to bring a farmers market to the neighborhood and discovered a much bigger problem. “It wasn’t just neighborhoods like ours that didn’t have a link to the farmers right around us; it was also hospitals, universities, and schools,” says Garcia-Granados. Working with other local farm and food advocates, including Bob Pierson of Farm to City, they created Common Market in 2008 to forge a distribution link between threatened farms and fresh food-deprived urban communities.

Since then, the venture has grown rapidly. In 2012, Common Market supplied over 150 customers—institutions such as schools, hospitals, retailers, restaurants, and buying clubs—with produce, dairy, and meat from about 75 sustainably run regional farms.

And that market is only continuing to flourish. Last year, Common Market’s limited facilities became the greatest bottleneck to future growth. As they expanded their product line, and more institutions requested their services, Common Market had to turn down sales opportunities due to lack of storage and packaging capacity. The path became clear. Common Market had to move to a larger space and they needed to do it quickly.

This growth in business has also driven growth in the diversity of the community ready to stand behind Common Market’s success. To secure the loan, Common Market called upon well-established relationships with organizations such as the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, the Claneil Foundation, and the 11th Hour Project to procure over $350,000 in pledge contributions in conjunction with a $100,000 RSF Donor Advised Fund grant. Additionally, the Common Market community came together to make $35,000 in individual guarantees through the RSF Social Investment Fund.

This collective effort accomplished two very important goals. From a financial perspective, it made the loan possible. The grant funding strengthened the credit and made for a sound financial transaction. Equally important, at a social level, the deal built and reinforced important long-term relationships.

“Trading in a modest rent bill for a million dollar mortgage is a huge leap,” says Ted Levinson, RSF’s Director of Lending.  “The guarantee community and the multi-year commitments from foundations convinced us that Common Market was up to the task.”

RSF’s relationship with Common Market actually began in 2010. At that time Common Market had ready suppliers and buyers; the big challenge was cash flow—institutions are used to paying in 60-100 days but supporting farmers requires a shorter payment cycle, typically 15-30 days.

“As we grew we realized we were facing a huge cash flow gap. That’s where RSF came in,” says Garcia-Granados.

RSF provided a $130,000 line of credit through the RSF PRI Fund.  At the time, the Program Related Investing Fund (PRI) was a perfect match by providing low-interest loans to social enterprises not quite ready for long-term debt financing. A year later, as the organization grew its revenue and increased its stability, RSF was able to increase the line of credit to as much as $350,000 through the Social Enterprise Lending program. To date, RSF has extended this credit line into a third year.

While the demand for Common Market’s mission-driven services is strong, the capital to support their efforts was hard to come by. This is a familiar problem for social enterprises, particularly those working for a more just and sustainable food system. Oftentimes, whether for-or non-profit, organizations acting as aggregators and distributors of sustainable, local food are new with limited revenue and access to capital.

Conventional lenders and equity investors rarely take the slow growth approach to helping these businesses succeed. These companies often get their start with personal funds and the support of community, friends, and family. But, when it comes to really making a larger impact, scrappy bootstrap methods only go so far. This is where social finance comes in. Organizations need substantial financial support in order to scale. And they need it from foundations and lending institutions who understand the value of positive impacts in addition to financial return.

At RSF, we pride ourselves on supporting game-changing social innovators, like Tatiana and Haile, who don’t meet the standard expectations of traditional finance.  We have established a track record for this through debt—with steady, incremental payments—and close working relationships with our borrowers. The integrated capital approach pushes our model one step further; it allows us to offer a mixture of traditional debt financing and philanthropic funding for an organization’s growth needs—all in support of its important transformative mission.

Celebrated unit represents one out of 1,861 new homes built for military service men and women and their families at Ft. Bliss since 2005

DESCRIPTION:

El Paso, TX, June 7, 2013 /3BL Media/ - On June 6, the nation’s 4th largest general construction contractor celebrated a milestone achievement at Ft. Bliss Army Installation. Since the late 1990’s, Balfour Beatty Construction has established one of the largest inventories of completed privatized military housing in the country and is paying tribute to their 10,000th unit which has been turned over at Ft. Bliss in El Paso, TX. The unit also represents one of 1,861 homes built for military service men and women and their families by Balfour Beatty Construction at Ft. Bliss.

The company’s accomplishments in the military housing market have been made possible with the 1996 execution of the Military Privatized Housing Initiative (MHPI) bill that Congress authorized to provide adequate and quality housing for service members and their families. In 2002, Balfour Beatty Communities and Balfour Beatty Construction formed a partnership to respond to the privatized housing needs of the Army, Navy, and Air Force across the United States.

“I have a hard time wrapping my arms around 10,000 units. It’s a miracle,” said Don Spigelmyer, retired Executive Director of the Residential Communities Initiative (RCI), who was one of the guest speakers at Thursday’s celebratory event. “This is not just about the celebration of 10,000 homes. This is about 10,000 military families who have a place to call home.”

Balfour Beatty entered the military housing market in 2000 upon being selected for the first MHPI pilot project at Ft. Carson located near Colorado Springs, CO. The success of that project set the stage for future awards across the country. The company’s milestones to date include 19 privatized projects on 40 installations in 23 states and the District of Columbia (D.C.). Within the past decade, Balfour Beatty has been awarded more than 13,500 newly constructed units.

“This accomplishment could only happen with the help of many dedicated people. Thousands of individuals have contributed to providing quality housing for the men and women who protect our way of life,” said Jim Taylor, President of Balfour Beatty Construction’s Military Housing division. Taylor made public his plans to retire at the end of 2013 during the ceremonial presentation. He has served as President of the company’s Military Housing division since 2008.

The company’s Military Housing team is proud to serve the U.S. government in helping to renovate, rebuild, and improve living conditions for soldiers and their families across the country. In 2012, Building Design + Construction ranked Balfour Beatty Construction as the nation’s third largest multifamily contractor.

2014 Buick Lineup Offers Active Safety Suite

Advanced safety technologies available on all five Buick models

SOURCE:General Motors

DESCRIPTION:

DETROIT, June 7, 2013 /3BL Media/ - Every 2014 Buick model – VeranoRegalLaCrosseEncore and Enclave – will be offered with a suite of available active safety systems that watch the front, side and rear of the vehicle to help prevent crashes.

Buick will be the only brand in the industry to offer Forward Collision Alert, Lane Departure Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Side Blind Zone Warning, and a Rear Vision Camera on every vehicle.

Forward Collision Alert and Lane Departure Warning are a pair of technologies that use a single forward-looking camera to read traffic and lane markers on the road ahead. Visual warnings and audible tones alert the driver to unsignaled lane changes or a slowed vehicle.

Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Side Blind Zone Warning use radar to watch spots the driver may not see – and provide visible and audible warnings to help prevent collisions.

When the vehicle is in reverse and the Rear Vision Camera is active, Rear Cross Traffic Alert will flash a red icon and directional arrow if another vehicle is approaching from either side, which is especially useful backing out of a tight driveway or parking space in a busy lot.

Side Blind Zone Alert detects other vehicles in a Buick’s blind spot and alerts the driver with a yellow icon on the glass of either side view mirror. If a turn signal is engaged while a vehicle is detected in the next lane, the system provides an audible alert to discourage merging.

“Striking design, uncompromised comfort and purposeful safety technology – those are the core attributes of every Buick,” said Tony DiSalle, vice president of Buick Marketing. “Our 2014 lineup will tell an active safety story exclusive to the Buick brand and, more importantly, one that helps protect our drivers and passengers better than ever before.”

Passive safety is equally important to Buick. Although 2014 models have not been rated, every 2013 Buick model available today has been designated as a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Current Buick models make extensive use of high strength steel and, with the Verano compact luxury sedan and Encore luxury small crossover, offer as many as 10 standard air bags.

The Enclave luxury crossover comes standard with the industry’s first front center air bag, which helps protect drivers and front passengers in far-side impact crashes. It deploys from the inboard side of the driver’s seat and positions itself between the driver and front passenger, offering protection that no other airbag can offer.

Enbridge Ride: Ride Positive for Workplace, at Home and Personally

$

SOURCE:Enbridge, Inc.

DESCRIPTION:

In the 28 years Glenn Beaumont has worked at Enbridge he has never seen an event that unifies employees as does Toronto’s Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer Enbridge.

“The camaraderie among the Enbridge team is very visible and tangible. And it has no hierarchy,” says Glenn, Senior Vice President, Toronto. He attributes that to getting to see the “human side” of colleagues.

About 270 Enbridge employees rode or volunteered in the 2012 event. Before the ride they fundraised together and during the ride they trained together, helped each other and developed a bond that comes from sharing a meaningful experience.

Glenn rode with the Enbridge logo emblazoned on his shirt and was delighted at how as they rode by, other riders would often thank him for Enbridge’s support.

“Nothing that I remember has given us such a positive public image,” he says. “It makes you feel good about the company.” And he notes that all the positive feedback and personal interactions extends beyond the rides.

“I think for the longer term, people feel better about their colleagues and the company,” he explains. “I can’t believe that doesn’t have a positive fallout on the organization everyday.”

The first year Glenn led the ride in 2011, 70 Enbridge employees rode. In 2012, 170 joined the ride. He was especially impressed by the Enbridge employees who travelled from New Brunswick to participate in the ride.

“After the first few people joined, others watched and were inspired; and now we have people who join us from all parts of our gas distribution system.”

After watching him ride in 2011, Glenn’s wife, two sons, his daughter and a couple of friends were also inspired to join him on the ride in 2012. He’s proud of his family and as much he inspired them, he says they are part of the motivation that keeps him involved.

Glenn was diagnosed with prostate cancer six years ago and rides with a yellow flag extending from his bicycle. He feels fortunate to have survived. His brother and mother-in-law have both survived cancer and now his father has been diagnosed with the disease. So, when Enbridge took over the sponsorship of the Ride to Conquer Cancer in Toronto and Glenn was asked to lead the team, it made sense to do so.

“If you look at the survival rates compared to 20 years ago, it’s like night and day. That has a lot to do with improved diagnostics, which is a result of the research that’s been done because of the support from all of the people who donate,” Glenn says.  “That’s why I’m still here. So it resonates with me personally and it felt right to be involved in the ride.”
