DESCRIPTION:
Ten thousand Chicago-area apartments have been made more energy efficient in the past four years through a partnership designed to reduce energy bills and preserve affordable rental housing. The Energy Savers Multifamily Program for privately owned buildings is supported by CNT Energy and Community Investment Corp, a non-profit. There are an estimated 425,000 rental units in Cook County’s multifamily buildings, with an average age of 90 years, many of them small operations without the expertise to retrofit their property. For the Energy Savers program, CNT Energy offers a free assessment and will recommend upgrades to cut energy consumption and bills. CNT helps building owners locate contractors and evaluates the finished improvements. Then the Community Investment Corp finances those improvements through low-cost, seven-year loans. Another 22,000 apartment units have undergone an energy audit and are in the process of upgrades.
The Center for Resource Solutions has announced that Just Energy’s new Renewable Energy Certificate, JustGreen REC, has been certified by Green-e Energy. Just Energy is a green energy provider with $70 million invested in green energy projects. Green-e Energy is a certification and verification program for renewable energy, with 300 vendors selling over 30 million-megawatt hours of renewable electricity in retail transactions in 2011.
