DESCRIPTION:

Awards of more than $80 million to 197 school-based health center programs across the country, made possible by the Affordable Care Act, have been announced by Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. The funding allows school-based health centers to serve an additional 384,000 students, and continues the expansion of preventive and primary health care services. School-based health centers enable children with acute or chronic illnesses to attend school, and also improve the overall health and wellness of all children through health screenings, health promotion and disease prevention activities.

Santa Monica’s “City of Wellbeing” concept has won it a place in the top 20 finalists in the Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Mayors Challenge. If its proposal is scored as one of the top five, it could win as much as $5 million. BPMC’s competition encourages cities to propose innovative ideas to solve major urban problems and improve city life. Santa Monica’s proposal is based on the establishment of “ a wellbeing index” that is meant to measure and improve the lives of all city residents.
