A couple of scorecards that rank countries on their sustainability efforts have been released. The fourth Annual Global Green Economy Index, compiled by Dual Citizen, evaluates economic indicators and datasets on leadership on climate change, support of efficiency sectors, market facilitation, investment in green technology and management of ecosystems and natural capital. The top five ranked countries were Sweden, Norway, Costa Rica, Germany, and Denmark, all of which are well on the way to reducing their use of fossil fuels and cutting greenhouse gas emissions.
Despite U.S. leadership in green technology, energy efficiency innovation, and environmental awareness, America’s large carbon footprint and lack of a national policy on climate change mitigation placed the U.S. at 28th on the list. A similar but more expansive ranking of 178 nations on environmental health and ecosystem vitality has been released by The Yale Center for Environmental Law & Policy and Columbia University’s Center for International Earth Science Information Network. The Environmental Performance Index put Switzerland at the top, followed by Luxembourg, Australia, Singapore and the Czech Republic. The U.S. ranked 33rd. The U.S.’s mediocre score on international economic and environmental ratings like these should cause American policy to step up its efforts to address climate change.
