DESCRIPTION:
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and at Mary Kay we're continuing the conversation of ending domestic violence long after the news cycle passes. We know that if we're going to end this for good, we have to stop it before it begins. That's why Mary Kay has had a long-term commitment to prevent and help end domestic violence that began when our company founder, Mary Kay Ash, learned that some Mary Kay Independent Beauty Consultants were suffering in silence from domestic violence. In the 1990's Mary Kay Ash decided to make this issue part of her company's legacy which continues today in great part through The Mary Kay Foundation.
At Mary Kay Inc. we call these efforts "Don't Look Away." Part of the program centers on educating young women about the warning signs of abusive relationships and how to receive help through loveisrespect's text message helpline. This "text for help" program is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. By simply texting "loveis" to 22522, teens and young adults are connected safely and anonymously to trained peer advocates who provide support, safety tips and referrals for their own relationships or a friend's.
The text-for-help program is just one way Mary Kay is working to help to end abuse through "Don't Look Away". Want to help us make a difference? Here are some ways you can get involved:
- Learn more about Mary Kay's sponsorship of the nation's first ever text-for-help service at marykay.com/dontlookaway.
- Be a role model and establish healthy relationships in your life.
- Help raise awareness through social media by sharing statistics and resources using #dontlookaway. For example "1 in 3 young people are affected by dating abuse."
- Volunteer at a local domestic violence shelter.
- Donate to the Mary Kay Foundation by going to www.marykayfoundation.org.
Tell us how you're giving back during Domestic Violence Awareness Month and help us keep the conversation going! And remember, men have a voice and a role too in this effort to end violence against women once and for all!
