DESCRIPTION:

October 1, 2014 /3BL Media/ - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognized Eastman Chemical Company with an ENERGY STAR® Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Award for excellence in combined heat and power operations at its Kingsport site.

CHP, also known as cogeneration, simultaneously produces electricity and useful steam from a single heat source. Established in 2001, EPA’s CHP Partnership is a voluntary program that encourages the use of CHP to reduce the environmental impact of power generation. The partnership works closely with energy users, the CHP industry, state and local governments, and other energy stakeholders to facilitate the development of new projects and to promote energy, environmental and economic benefits.

Eastman’s Kingsport site houses 17 boilers that produce steam to support manufacturing processes, help meet the heating and cooling needs of more than 600 buildings, and drive 19 steam turbine generators with a combined output of 200 megawatts of electricity.  This is enough electricity to power a city of nearly 170,000 homes.

“Eastman is committed to working sustainably and we continue to look for opportunities to improve our operations,” said Parker Smith, vice president and general manager of Worldwide Manufacturing Support. “We have been using cogeneration at Eastman’s Tennessee Operations for more than 80 years. This award reflects the company’s commitment to sustainability and the great work of the men and women at Eastman.”

EPA presented the awards at today’s ENERGY STAR Industrial Partner and Focus Meetings in Washington, D.C. Eastman was one of the three companies recognized, including Janssen R&D LLC and Merck.

“The companies recognized today with the ENERGY STAR Combined Heat and Power Award are leading by example and reducing carbon pollution equal to the generation of electricity used by more than 63,000 homes, and have reduced their combined energy costs by over $54 million annually,” said EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy.

Earlier this year, Eastman was recognized by EPA with an ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year - Sustained Excellence award for continued leadership in superior energy management. Through its partnership with the ENERGY STAR program, Eastman has improved its energy performance, saved money and helped to protect the environment for future generations.

”ENERGY STAR and its programs, such as the CHP Partnership, have provided insight for us to continue to grow and improve our energy management program,” said Sharon Nolen, manager of Eastman’s corporate energy program. “We are honored to receive the recognition and we look forward to our continued work with ENERGY STAR.”
