DESCRIPTION:

Today’s guest post comes from Craig Waugh, advisor for Lilly’s global health programs.

I have just returned from the second annual national NCD Summit in New Delhi with renewed energy from our day with leaders from across India, who are in search of answers to the increasing challenge of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in their country. The summit focused on NCDs in general and diabetes specifically, which is a growing problem in India.

For scale, according to the International Diabetes Federation, in 2013 there were 61 million people in India with diabetes. In 2014, that number had grown to 65 million, an increase that is about three times the total number of people living in Lilly’s headquarter city of Indianapolis. The most shocking part is that the overall number of people with diabetes in India today is almost double the total number of people living in the state of California.
