In celebration of World Water Day, the interactive infographic will feature videos, photos, and tweets from everyday people who experienced water poverty in the 2013 4Liter Challenge.

LOS ANGELES, March 19, 2014 /3BL Media/ – World Water Day is often spent focusing solely on the 880 million people who still lack access to a basic source of clean water. Today, however, a majority of the world’s population lives within 31 miles of an endangered water source, meaning that the water crisis is close to home for nearly all of us.
In 2013 DIGDEEP launched the 4Liter Challenge to change the way Americans think about water, helping them better conserve their resources while raising funds for water projects around the world. The average American uses over 500 liters (130 gallons) of water at home every day. During the 4Liter Challenge, participants reduce their daily consumption from 500 liters to just four, using the equivalent of four soda bottles to cook, clean, drink and bathe.
“Living on just four liters of water isn’t easy, but many of the participants had a great time with it,” states George McGraw, Executive Director of DIGDEEP. “People shared really intimate moments: difficulties shaving their legs or washing their hair, hilarious and inventive ways of cooking a meal or washing the dishes, really moving personal reflections on just how much water we use and how often we take it for granted. It’s amazing how the experience sticks with you, even after it’s over.”
The 2013 Challenge, which took place in October, brought together 592 people of all ages from six countries. Participants included students, parents with young children, working urbanites, and teams from universities, nonprofits, and companies. In two weeks, participants raised over
$17,000. Donations were used to fund six water projects in South Sudan, Cameroon, and the United States (New Mexico).
The infographic will go live at 4liters.org at 12:01 am on March 22nd. Until then a preview version with reduced functionality is available to the press at 4liters.org/verynice.php.
The infographic features select content from 4Liters participants, including celebrities David Henrie (Wizards of Waverly Place), Drake Bell (Drake and Josh), James Scott (Days of our Lives), Patrick Nuo (German Idol) and Eduardo Verástegui (Bella, Chasing Papi). The site also allows anyone who donated to a 4Liter Challenge to “track” how and where their gift is being used. It was designed by VeryNice.co, an LA-based creative agency responsible for the “give-half” model.
The 4Liter Challenge will take place again in October of 2014. A new website and media kit will be released in early Summer. Until then, teachers in 6-12 grade classrooms can use the free web tool and curriculum to run mini 4Liter Challenges in their classrooms. Participants can pre-register for the 2014 Challenge using the link at the footer of the infographic.
