Eastman Welcomed Dr. Benjamin S. Carson to a Full House Crowd

“It is our privilege to host Dr. Carson here in the Tri-Cities region,” said Etta Clark, vice president of Public Affairs and Policy. “Dr. Carson’s story is inspirational, and his personal and professional accomplishments are remarkable.”

Dr. Carson discussed a variety of topics, but the heart of his message focused on empowering individuals through education and personal responsibility. Reflecting on his childhood, Carson explained that he grew up in single-parent home and praised his mother for never giving up when times were hard.

"She never felt sorry for herself," said Carson. "And she didn't feel sorry for us either," he laughed. "It became very clear to me that the person who has the most to do with what happens to you, is you."

Dr. Carson emphasized the importance of education at all ages, into adulthood. He challenged the audience to spend time learning every day.

Retired from a highly publicized medical career, Carson was a professor of neurosurgery, oncology, plastic surgery, and pediatrics as well as former director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center. Carson is credited with pioneering work on the first completely successful separation of craniopagus (Siamese) twins joined at the back of the head.

Carson is president of the Carson Scholars Fund, which he co-founded with his wife, Candy. The organization recognizes young people of all backgrounds for exceptional academic and humanitarian accomplishments.  A best-selling author, Dr. Carson has released four books and is currently working on his newest, One Nation, scheduled for release in May 2014. He is also a weekly columnist for The Washington Times and contributor for FOX News.

Carson holds more than 60 honorary doctorate degrees and has received many awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the U.S.
