Has school started for you, your friends or family members? This blog post is for you! School is back in session and while most students are thinking about the steps to a successful school year, at loveisrespect we are also reminding young people about safety. If you or a friend or family member are in an abusive relationship or recently left one, here are some ideas to consider.
- If you and an abusive partner go to the same school or live in the same area, there’s the chance you’ll run into them again. Having your abusive partner in close proximity can be incredibly difficult to overcome, but there are ways to deal - and stay safe - while you two share the same space.
- In the same class? Change your route to distract you from the situation and from accidentally running into your abusive partner. Don’t be afraid to tell your teacher or counselor so that you two don’t end up in the same group projects – it’s all about limiting your exposure.
- Do you have the same friends? If you and your partner have the same circle of friends, it can really cause tension. Try to explain to your nearest and dearest why you don’t feel comfortable being around your partner and how they can help keep you safe.
- Are you in college? Dorm security and RAs may be able to help keep your abusive partner from entering your dorm and you should definitely tell your friends so that they can help keep you safe. Consider looking into campus programs where an officer or student will escort you back to your place if you’re walking home alone.
