I love the theme for our 50th anniversary – One Woman Can! This year at our Company’s 50th anniversary, I felt the same excitement that I had when I celebrated the 10th, 20th, 30th and 40th anniversaries of this wonderful company that changes women’s lives. One woman planted a tiny seed in Dallas, Texas, in 1963, and that seed has become an international force, changing lives of women around the world.
When Mary Kay Ash founded this company, she dreamed that we would grow beyond the Dallas region. That vision grew to painting the United States pink with Mary Kay Independent Beauty Consultants. In 1971 Mary Kay Inc. established its first international subsidiary in Australia, but it wasn’t until the 1980s that Mary Kay saw the impact that this opportunity could have for women of all nations.
As we expanded into Canada, Argentina, Germany, and Mexico, she began receiving letters from independent sales force members from these markets sharing with her how their lives had been blessed by this opportunity. Mary Kay realized that women everywhere have the same desire to build their lives around the balanced priorities of faith first, family second and career third. And the dream grew to encompass such countries as Taiwan, China, Russia, Brazil and Korea – to name a few of the 37 markets that now comprise the 3 million Independent Beauty Consultants that we have worldwide.
Amazingly, no matter where you go in the Mary Kay world, the same spirit of love and sharing is prevalent. The Go-Give Spirit and Golden Rule philosophy transcend any cultural differences between countries. This was particularly evident when I attended a sales force members’ event in Brazil this month. There Mary Kay speakers from Argentina, Mexico, Brazil and the United States. What I learned from these great women was that the principles and philosophies upon which Mary Kay Ash built this company are in each of their hearts. It is what they teach and how they live. It isn’t just in the United States, it around the world!
One Woman Can – bring women of the world together in a special bond that shares ideas, encourages one another, and passes on the legacy of Mary Kay Ash.
Jennifer Cook first began working for Mary Kay Inc. in 1971 as a part-time employee working her way through college. In 1974 she became a full-time employee and Mary Kay’s Administrative Assistant. Currently, Jennifer is The Mary Kay Foundation and Museum Director.
