DESCRIPTION:

Kingsport, Tenn., May 15, 2013 /3BL Media/ Eastman Chemical Company (NYSE:EMN) was one of 13 American Chemistry Council (ACC) members recognized for achievement in the area of waste minimization, reuse and recycling, and honored at ACC’s annual Responsible Care® Conference and Expo in Hollywood, Florida on May 6.

Eastman’s operations in Martinsville, VA received an award for an innovative recycling project that prevents 5 million pounds per year of recyclable material from going to the local landfill. This amount of material is equal to trash from 750 average homes for a year.

Employee teams worked with a local recycler, Thomas Systems Inc., to identify a snap-apart container for collection of corrugated cores from wound film. The container is easy to use and decontaminate, as well as safe to transport. The teams also resolved some challenging logistical issues.

“This employee-initiated project has enhanced local recycling with other businesses, greatly reducing the amount of recyclable materials that are landfilled. We are proud of their efforts to enable the site to be more sustainable,” said Brian Miller, site manager at Martinsville.

2013 marks the 25th anniversary of Responsible Care®, a voluntary performance initiative that has driven the safe, responsible, sustainable management of chemicals.

The annual Responsible Care® conference provides a forum for industry leaders to learn from their peers and other experts in the field about strategies to improve their companies’ product safety and process safety performance and expand business opportunities. Award winners qualify based on exemplary performance and are selected by a committee of internal and external experts.
