DESCRIPTION:
Last week, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) and the Center for Green Schools (CFGS) exemplified true partnership in action with a “Common Core Boot Camp” at the U.S. Green Building Council in Washington, DC, in preparation for the CFGS’s national convening of education stakeholders and sustainability thought leaders, scheduled to take place in June 2013.
The comprehensive training session, which took place on April 29 at USGBC headquarters in Washington, DC, was led by HMH’s Kathy Mawk (Vice President of Reading Initiatives), Dianne Lee (West Region Sales Director), and Ben Koth (Midwest Region Sales Director). Designed to educate CFGS employees on the Common Core, the product lifecycle, and curricula decision-making processes, the session provided essential context for CFGS staff, who previously had limited knowledge of the Common Core and the role it will play in making sustainability education a key part of classroom instruction. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with CFGS reporting much greater understanding of the Common Core and comfort levels around leading the forthcoming convening.
Sponsored by HMH and led by CFGS, the convening, entitled Sustainability Curriculum and National Standards Visioning, will focus on opportunities to embed sustainability concepts into Common Core-aligned education content, bringing together a wide variety of stakeholders, from content providers to district superintendents to sustainability thought leaders and practitioners.
This is just one part of HMH’s broader commitment to providing more than two million children with access to safer, healthier and more effective learning environments. As part of a commitment announced at the Clinton Global Initiative Annual Conference in September 2012, HMH joined the Green Apple Initiative, a cause marketing campaign driven by the Center for Green Schools at the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) that raises awareness that where we learn matters. Together with the other Green Apple partners, HMH is helping schools transform their learning environments by raising awareness among our customers and driving the conversation around sustainability education and the Common Core State Standards.
