DESCRIPTION:
One of the most vital roles that Earth Day plays is to serve as an opportunity to educate. Keep America Beautiful (KAB) shares this commitment to education. In fact, one of its 2013 Vibrant Communities Impact Goals is the goal of educating 250,000 children about the environment.
Among the many experiential educational programs that KAB produces is Recycle-Bowl, a four-week recycling competition for K-12 students. Recycle-Bowl seeks to increase the recycling rates in schools that already have recycling programs and help to establish new programs in schools that don’t have a program.
Keep America Beautiful, with the help of Recycle-Bowl sponsor Nestlé Waters North America (NWNA), far surpassed its 2013 Vibrant Communities Impact Goal by reaching more than 900,000 students across the country during the Oct. 15 through Nov. 9 competition.
The first-place winner of the 2012 Recycle-Bowl was Taylor Primary in Kokomo, Ind., where students recycled 47 pounds of waste per child. Additionally, the students at Panther Valley Middle School in Lansford, Penn., received the top award for the NWNA employee-supported school that participated in the competition. The total amount of recyclables recovered during the 2012 competition added up to 4.5 million pounds. If all students in America recycled at the rate of this year’s Recycle-Bowl competitors, approximately 2.4 million tons of material would be diverted annually from landfills.
