DESCRIPTION:

On April 8, 2013, Enbridge announced that it had partnered with EDF EN Canada Inc. to invest about $0.6 billion to acquire a 50 per cent interest in the 300-megawatt (MW) Blackspring Ridge Wind Project near Lethbridge, Alberta.

The project, which will be the biggest wind project in Western Canada when operational, represents the largest-ever investment in wind energy in Alberta.

Blackspring Ridge is an important addition to Enbridge’s fleet of renewable projects as it significantly expands our wind energy portfolio in the Alberta market, which we first entered nearly a decade ago with our Magrath and Chin Chute windfarms,” said Don Thompson, Vice President, Green Energy, Enbridge Inc. “Enbridge’s investment represents a further addition to its large suite of attractive commercially secured growth projects, reinforcing the continuation of its industry leading growth rate through 2016 and well beyond. We welcome this opportunity to continue expanding our renewable energy assets into Western Canada.”

Blackspring Ridge represents Enbridge's eleventh wind farm and brings our total wind generating capacity to more than 1,000 MW.

“The project also allows Enbridge to maintain its position as the second largest wind energy generator in Canada,” Mr. Thompson added. "We're pleased to continue our relationship with EDF EN Canada and Vestas."

Blackspring Ridge is the third wind energy project that Enbridge jointly owns with EDF EN Canada. The other two are the 300-MW Massif du Sud and 150-MW Lac Alfred projects, both still under construction in the province of Quebec.

In addition to our wind projects across North America, Enbridge’s renewable energy portfolio also includes four solar facilities, a geothermal installation and waste heat recovery facilities. These projects have the capacity to supply enough clean energy to serve more than 500,000 homes.

Construction of Blackspring Ridge is expected to start in the second quarter of 2013 and reach commission in mid-summer 2014.
