How the World Food Program provides life-saving food assistance and a pathway to self-sufficiency

SOURCE:UPS

DESCRIPTION:

When Jeremias Ngwenya opened his eyes one morning last March in Mozambique, he remembers exactly how he felt.

He rested upon a soft, white mattress with a faded blue flower print, just underneath a teal-colored mosquito net. Small rays of sun burst through the uneven spaces in the walls of tethered reeds surrounding him.

“When I woke up, I had a lot of will,” he said. “I didn’t sleep yesterday. I hadn’t eaten anything. I had will to thank God. I had a desire to go get the food.”

For the Ngwenya family, today was their final food distribution day from the World Food Program (WFP).

Because of a historic drought in 2016, their plot of rain-fed farmland, managed by his wife Anastacia, had little to offer their two young children Josue and Isabel. Jeremias would sometimes buy a small additional amount of food with his earnings as a cobbler, repairing shoes for a few customers a week.

Now, the potential promise of new plantings of corn and beans was still one month away from being ready to harvest.

With the help of WFP, Jeremias and the small-scale farmers who call the rural community of Macunene home averted catastrophe. They received life-saving food assistance and learned new skills to become more self-reliant. They took steps to build their resilience to climate change, planting drought-resistant seeds, adopting new irrigation techniques and accessing new markets to sell more of what they grow. Many were now looking forward to the future.

Later that morning, Jeremias and Anastacia walked to a large, green savannah about 45 minutes from their home. It was WFP’s main food distribution point, a central location where families in Macunene had come to receive their monthly food ration during the crisis. The distribution was planned to start between 10 and 11 a.m.

Slowly, more families started to trickle through the trees surrounding the open field. Early arrivals found refuge under the little shade in the area, while others took out umbrellas to protect themselves from the searing sun. The grass fields hummed with the chatter of anticipation.

But then word came. There was a problem.

Whatever it takes

Less than a quarter mile away from the food distribution point, as dozens of families waited patiently, a WFP food truck was desperately revving its engine.

Its bed, filled with 100-pound bags of corn and beans as well as smaller boxes of vegetable oil, had met its match: a deeply set caked mud, trapping the truck’s spinning wheels like quicksand. It was a vestige of Macunene’s floods, now scorched by the sun.

Almost 20 men positioned themselves around it, pushing and crying out as the driver inside put the pedal to the metal, smoke billowing from down below. Small sticks and branches were placed under the wheels to give it traction. But with every try, each lasting 20-30 seconds, the truck veered ever so slightly forward before rocking back to its original position.

This was everyday life on the “last mile,” food drop-offs at distribution points distant from reliable public infrastructure. The drought – the culmination of three years of limited-to-no rainfall – put lives at risk because so many rural families depended on rain-fed agriculture to survive.

In a cruel twist, the unexpected return of rain months later only intensified their plight, bringing intense flooding that washed away once dry, barren fields. In some areas, it cut off access to communities in need, making subsequent food deliveries even more important.

Now families in Macunene once again relied on WFP’s ability to circumvent these weather-related obstacles. In the end, unable to unstick the truck from the mud, WFP staff unloaded some of the bags of food from the truck bed into a smaller cargo truck. Two additional trucks followed, bypassing the mud and successfully arriving to the main distribution point.

Two hours behind schedule, the food finally arrived.

Last exit

During the next few hours, each family received their final food distribution, including bags of corn, a portion of beans and vegetable oil. The food would help tide many over until next month’s harvest.

For Jeremias and Anastacia, it would not only help them feed their children. It would give them the sustenance they would need to wake up with purpose every day.

For Joana Tiago Macuácua, a social worker with one of WFP’s local partners in the field, the National Institute for Social Affairs, she knows how critical this food assistance has been for the most vulnerable in Macunene, including the elderly and others with chronic degenerative illnesses.

“Without this food, it would have been a great tragedy,” she said. “It was one of the most important types of assistance for this community. [During the drought], they didn’t have anything to their name. And what food did exist in stores was expensive.”

Back at their house, Jeremias and Anastacia carried their bags of corn into their home, covered by a corrugated tin roof. They placed the food beside their jugs of water, just under a rope with hanging clothes. It would be all they would have until next month, when he and Anastacia planned to harvest their plot of land.

Twenty five years ago, renowned writer Mia Couto wrote about the weather of Mozambique, his homeland. Today, his words echo, as a more extreme cycle of drought, floods and cyclones has put his people on the front lines of hunger.

At noon, the rain stops.
The sun is right overhead, and so vengeful that in an instant it sucks up the excess water from the savannah.
The earth imbibes the flood, squeezing the smallest puddle dry.
As the scene changes so unbelievably, the drought once again prevails.
Where water had held sway but a few hours previously, dust now pervades the air.
One can hear time scraping its bones against the stones.

For now, the rain had stopped. The sun remained overhead, and the floods had long gone. Would a drought once again prevail? Only time would tell, but Jeremias and Anastacia hope they will be ready for the next one.

“I hope we have food next time for my family,” said Anastacia. “I pray that in the future they can find a job and improve their lives.”

It is this same hope – a desire to be self-sufficient, to no longer need food assistance from WFP to survive – that fuels Jeremias.

To know his family has what it needs to not just survive, but thrive.

Business Sustainability Impact Through Executive Education – An Interview with Erica Ocampo, Sustainability Strategy Manager, Dow

SOURCE:University of Michigan: Erb Institute | Business for Sustainability

DESCRIPTION:

Dow recognized that it is often challenging for employees to see the impact that their day to day job has on the overall sustainability performance of the company. As such, Dow needed to find a way to bridge this gap and mobilize employees at the individual level as part of redefining the role of business in society at a corporate level. Erica Ocampo, Sustainability Strategy Manager (Consumer Solutions), worked with the Erb Institute | Business for Sustainability to develop an interactive and personalized executive education program.

Erica Ocampo, opined “I was very happy to find the right partner with the Erb Institute. It was particularly exciting to see their ability to take our initial ideas to the next level by bringing together a multidisciplinary team of experts from the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business, School for Environment and Sustainability and the Ford School of Public Policy.” Dow and Erb — together with Ross Executive Education — collaborated on the design of a 4-day training which provided an overview of the history, trends, strategies and immediate challenges on key environmental, social and policy fronts.

Erica’s goals for the Sustainability Academy were:

  1.  First, to ensure employees left the program empowered with the new sustainability knowledge and tools acquired,
  2.  Second, to understand how sustainability connects to everything they do at the company, and
  3.  Lastly, to equip them with the right network, tools and mindset that will allow them to address sustainability challenges germane to their spheres of influence.

In July, 2017, 35 Dow employees, totaling eleven teams, arrived at the Ross School of Business after having earned their spot on the inaugural Sustainability Academy cohort from among over 100 nominated applicants.  Each team was assigned a project related to one of Dow’s 2025 Sustainability Goals. Teams are tasked to implement on a six-month timeframe, investing up to 20% of their regular work schedule. The program was kicked off with an address by Neil Hawkins, Corporate VP and Chief Sustainability Officer who impressed upon the participants the importance and urgency of commitment to Dow’s “Footprint, Handprint and Blueprint.”

The Footprint is what Dow considers to be the sustainability impact they can control directly within their “fence line”, while the Handprint considers the impact of Dow’s products and solutions outside of their direct purviewgates. The Blueprint is a bold and ambitious step that fosters collaborations not only between Dow, its’ suppliers and its’ customers, but also with government, NGO’s, and academia to foster the type of impact that contributes to the greater well-being of our society.

We are nearing the six-month follow-up and report out. The Erb Institute has kept the process on track; adding two follow-up webinars to keep participants engaged and to answer questions as the project teams began rolling up their sleeves. We are excited to see the results, and begin work with a second cohort at Dow Sustainability Academy in January.

Ray C. Anderson Foundation Commits Additional $2 Million to The Ray

DESCRIPTION:

ATLANTA, January 23, 2018 /3BL Media/ - The Trustees of the Ray C. Anderson Foundation have granted an additional $2 million to The Ray over the next two years, to fund important research, pilot projects and emerging technologies with the potential to shape the transportation infrastructure of the future.

The Ray C. Anderson Foundation is a private family foundation that honors and shares the values that Ray C. Anderson (1934-2011), Founder and Chairman of Interface Inc., set forth when he put his company on a path to sustainability in 1994.

The Ray was one of the Foundation’s first key funding initiatives, beginning with the 2014 naming of an 18-mile corridor on Interstate-85 in West Georgia as the “Ray C. Anderson Memorial Highway.” In the year that followed, the Foundation created The Ray as an independent nonprofit, empowering it to catalyze the corridor into a global model for regenerative transportation.  Between 2015 and 2017, the Foundation granted approximately $2.5 million in funding to pursue this work.

“The Ray began with a single idea from Harriet Langford, Ray’s daughter and Trustee of our Foundation,” says John A. Lanier, Executive Director of the Ray C. Anderson Foundation. “Just as her father did with Interface, Harriet asked, ‘What if we made this sustainable?’ That question was a seed that has grown into so much more, and we are proud to be the lead funders of such a remarkable project.”

“I think of The Ray as an epiphany of the Ray C. Anderson Foundation,” said Harriet Langford, President of The Ray. “It has given me the opportunity to carry on my father's work. We're not putting solar panels on the side of the road and calling it green; we're fundamentally changing our assumptions and expectations of highway infrastructure. Roads can be safe, sustainable, and regenerative. We're proving that and the world is starting to notice.”

The Ray has become a proving ground for the evolving ideas and technologies that will transform transportation infrastructure.  Current pilots and demonstrations on The Ray include:
  • Solar electric vehicle quick charger - eliminating range anxiety for EV drivers between Atlanta and Montgomery, AL.

  • 7,000 square foot pollinator garden at the Georgia Visitor Information Center as well as on the highway shoulder in conjunction with Troup County High School.

  • Installation of the Wattway, the first publicly available, drivable solar road in the world outside of France.

  • First U.S. installation of the WheelRight® drive-over tire pressure system with an added tread depth measurement component that is a global first.

  • Groundbreaking research on the benefits and opportunities of solar noise barriers on highways, in partnership with Innovia Technology, a U.K. based innovation consultancy.

  • A pilot project with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) and The Land Institute to study the possibilities of growing perennial wheat on underused land tracts adjacent to highways for erosion mitigation and carbon reduction.

  • Bioswales with native grasses and pollinators to slow water movements after rainstorms, thereby capturing particulate pollutants, heavy metals, rubber and oil that could negatively impact the water quality in the local watershed.

  • Coming soon in 2018 - groundbreaking for a right-of-way solar project in partnership with the Georgia Public Service Commission and GDOT.  It will be the first time that state-owned and maintained right-of-way will be used for renewable energy generation in Georgia

Two High School Students Receive National Award in Video Contest Focusing on Litter Prevention

SOURCE:Keep America Beautiful

DESCRIPTION:

STAMFORD, Conn., January 23, 2018 /3BL Media/ – Keep America Beautiful, the nation’s iconic community improvement nonprofit organization, announced the national Grand Prize Winners of its “How Will You … End Littering?” Video Contest, which was open to high school students from grades 9-12.

  • The 9th-10th grade category winner was Juanise Foster, a 9th grade student at Kenwood Academy High School in Chicago, Illinois, with her submission entitled, “A Bigger Problem.”
  • The 11th-12th grade category winner was Eliza Copilevitz, an 11th grade student at Clayton High School in St. Louis, Missouri, for her submission entitled, “Don’t Litter – It’s Our Home.”

The winners of the contest, which is sponsored by Keep America Beautiful and the Wrigley Company Foundation, were recently announced at Keep America Beautiful's 2018 National Conference in Dallas, Texas.

The “How Will You … End Littering?” Video Contest, which ran from Aug. 23 through Oct. 13, 2017, challenged high school students to address the issue of litter and littering behavior in America by creating a 30- to 60-second public service message video that conveys littering is costly, harmful to the environment and economy, illegal, and just downright wrong.

The Grand Prize Winners received an all-expenses paid trip for two to the 2018 Keep America Beautiful National Conference in Dallas, Texas. The winning videos are being showcased in front of more than 400 attendees today at Keep America Beautiful’s National Awards ceremony. In addition, each winner received a GoPro Hero5 Black video camera.

“Litter is costly to clean up, impacts our quality of life and economic development, and eventually ends up as marine debris, polluting our waterways and oceans,” said Keep America Beautiful Vice President/Litter and Affiliate Relations Cecile Carson. “The ‘How Will You … End Littering?’ Video Contest sheds a light on these issues with those who will have the greatest future impact – our next generation of community and environmental stewards. Our contest participants are helping to motivate their peers and others to do their part to end littering in America.”

The 9th-10th grade category runner-up was Carter Rutledge, a 10th grade student at Daniel Academy in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, with his submission entitled, “Perspective.”

The 11th-12th grade category runner-up was Nathan Katz, a 12th grade student at Weston High School in Weston, Connecticut, for his submission entitled, “Westport CT.”

The runners-up in each grade category received a GoPro Hero Session video camera. The first 20 eligible entrants in each grade category received a $25 Best Buy Gift Card.

For more than six decades, Keep America Beautiful has served as our country’s nonprofit steward of litter prevention. Keep America Beautiful’s 1971 public service campaign – “People start pollution. People can stop it.” – inspired a generation of Americans to change their behavior and had a dramatic impact on reducing the amount of visible roadside litter in our country. Keep America Beautiful’s landmark litter research and other resources, focus on the composition of litter and the attendant costs of littering. And Keep America Beautiful’s Litter Index and Community Appearance Index provide step-by-step methods of assessing current litter conditions and other indicators, which are used in thousands of communities and by municipalities nationwide.

The videos were scored by a panel of judges comprised of representatives from and associated with Keep America Beautiful, the Foodservice Packaging Institute and the Wrigley Company Foundation based on the following criteria:

  • 25 percent engaging storytelling around an effort to end littering;
  • 25 percent adherence to the brief;
  • 25 percent originality; and
  • 25 percent production quality.

Kris De Decker: Enough Is Enough

DESCRIPTION:

In our quest to make a better world, we often strive for more efficient use of resources. But is the goal of efficiency the right one? Our guest this week on Sea Change Radio, Low Tech Magazine founder, Kris De Decker, makes a compelling case for the abandonment of efficiency as the barometer for planetary stewardship. He proposes we use the simpler, but perhaps more painful objective of sufficiency. De Decker argues that pursuing greener, more efficient methods and technologies is, more often than not, a fool’s errand. He maintains that the human appetite for comfort, growth, and acquisition tends to turn efficiencies into increased consumption, and that the only way to truly fight climate change is for all of us to recognize that enough is, well, enough.

TransCanada is expanding its successful community scholarships program, that will further help hundreds of North Americans gain skills to realize their goals and prosper in the workforce.

SOURCE:TransCanada

DESCRIPTION:

CALGARY, Canada, January 24, 2018 /3BL Media/ - Media Advisory - TransCanada Corporation (TSX:TRP) (NYSE:TRP) (TransCanada) today announced it is expanding its successful community scholarships program, that will further help hundreds of North Americans gain skills to realize their goals and prosper in the workforce.

Buoyed by the success of last year's launch of the program, which saw close to 300 scholarships awarded in Canada and the U.S., the program has expanded its reach to include students in Mexico, where a new TransCanada Women's Scholarship is intended to help women continue their academic studies so they can improve their economic situation.

Overall, it is expected some $600,000 will be offered through the program this year with more than 350 scholarships available in the following categories:

  • TransCanada Community Leaders Scholarship (Canada, U.S., Mexico)
  • TransCanada Indigenous Legacy Scholarship (Canada, U.S., Mexico)
  • TransCanada Trades Scholarship (Canada and U.S.)
  • TransCanada Women's Scholarship (Mexico)

"Removing barriers to education helps clear the way for people to pursue their passions, support their families and better their communities," said Kristine Delkus, TransCanada's Executive Vice-President, Stakeholder and Technical Services and General Counsel.

"TransCanada has the privilege of living, working and operating in hundreds of communities across the continent and we believe that helping students succeed is the most powerful way we can help our communities flourish."

TransCanada has made its Community Scholarships available to students across a wide range of academic performance levels and post-secondary programs. The program is administered entirely by TransCanada and is unique in that the qualification criteria focuses on demonstration of leadership skills and community involvement, not solely on academic performance.

Applications open on January 18 and close April 15, 2018 at 11:59:59 EST. To learn more about the scholarships and the qualification criteria, and meet some of last year's recipients, students are encouraged to visit TCScholarships.com.

The TransCanada Community Scholarships are part of the company's North American-wide community investment program, which invested more than $16 million in more than 1,200 non-profit organizations and community enhancement projects across North America last year.

With more than 65 years' experience, TransCanada is a leader in the responsible development and reliable operation of North American energy infrastructure including natural gas and liquids pipelines, power generation and gas storage facilities. TransCanada operates one of the largest natural gas transmission networks that extends more than 91,500 kilometres (56,900 miles), tapping into virtually all major gas supply basins in North America. TransCanada is the continent's leading provider of gas storage and related services with 653 billion cubic feet of storage capacity. A large independent power producer, TransCanada currently owns or has interests in approximately 6,100 megawatts of power generation in Canada and the United States. TransCanada is also the developer and operator of one of North America's leading liquids pipeline systems that extends approximately 4,800 kilometres (3,000 miles), connecting growing continental oil supplies to key markets and refineries. TransCanada's common shares trade on the Toronto and New York stock exchanges under the symbol TRP. Visit TransCanada.com to learn more, or connect with us on social media and 3BL Media.

LOS ANGELES, January 24, 2018 /3BL Media/ – AEG’s Los Angeles Kings and YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles have partnered together to help introduce kids to the fundamentals of youth hockey through clinics and league play.
