Originally posted on mikebloomberg.com

On December 12th, 2017, two years to the day after the historic adoption of the Paris Agreement, global leaders convened at the One Planet Summit in Paris to strengthen the world’s collective commitment to climate action. French President Emmanuel Macron, joined by the President of the World Bank Group Jim Yong Kim and Secretary-General of the United Nations António Guterres, led discussions on the progress we’ve made so far, and the imperative action we must continue to ensure the health, safety, and future of our planet and global community.

Representing the United States in the wake of President Trump’s withdrawal from the Paris Agreement, Mike Bloomberg highlighted how U.S. non-federal actors like cities, states, and businesses are continuing to strive for our Paris goals through America’s Pledge. Bloomberg emphasized how, while federal support on climate is absent, President Trump’s inaction has had an unprecedented impact in galvanizing public and private sector leaders to take matters into their own hands.

Sustainability (and Dinosaurs) Come to Life Every Day at VMware Costa Rica

SOURCE:VMware

DESCRIPTION:

Gleaming in a soft bluish light, the Tyrannosaurus Rex greets visitors with something close to a smile. Made entirely of recycled materials, including flattened plastic cups, it stands as a testament to ingenuity, creativity and a generous heap of good humor.

In the 500+ person San Jose office of VMware Costa Rica, sustainability comes to life every day in ways large and small, from an artful dinosaur created during a hands-on reuse workshop to teams of employees purchasing and planting trees to help reforest nearby lands.

“Right now, we’re focused on green initiatives,” says Jorge Zuniga, who, along with Mauricio Bolanos, volunteered last year to co-lead the office’s sustainability effort — a passion they share. “The way we see it, every small step leads to something bigger. It all adds up.”

Bolanos concurs, “Our team worked to replace paper cups with ceramic mugs in the office kitchens and helped set up recycling and composting on all the floors. And that’s only the beginning.”

The men believe that the office’s collective action and energy will be able to tackle bigger challenges over time, including significantly reduce water and energy consumption and achieve carbon neutrality.

Recently, the team applied for Costa Rica’s coveted Bandera Azul, an environmental certification awarded annually to organizations that actively pursue conservation that protects natural resources, addresses climate change and improves public health. Winners will be announced in the spring.

The Costa Rica office isn’t alone in its desire to be a force for good in the world. It’s a company-wide ethos. In fact, VMware has a longstanding commitment to drive innovations that contribute to a net positive future and sustainable growth. Among its ambitious goals are reaching 100% renewable energy usage, along with a 10% intensity reduction target, by 2020.

Every day, VMware strives to leave ahead a better future. Including a T-Rex in Costa Rica.

SOURCE:Northern Trust

DESCRIPTION:

CHICAGO, December 14, 2017 /3BL Media/ - Northern Trust announced today that it is supporting Akola, a nonprofit jewelry brand, by funding in-store displays with an app at select Neiman Marcus stores.

Dallas-based Akola is a not-for-profit whose sole mission is the empowerment of women in Uganda and Dallas, seeking to transform their families and communities by focusing on their economic development.

“Northern Trust is pleased to invest in Akola to support their work of empowering women through economic development,” said Connie Lindsey, Northern Trust head of Corporate Social Responsibility and Global Diversity & Inclusion. “The impact of this investment aligns with our guiding principles of service, expertise and integrity. We are dedicated not only to meeting the needs of our clients and shareholders, but also giving back to the communities we serve.”

The Akola app will allow customers purchasing Akola Jewelry at Neiman Marcus to track the impact of their purchase in the lives of the Akola women and their families in both Dallas and Uganda. The app shares Akola’s mission, Social Reinvestment model, and images of Akola women.

“The sponsorship provided by Northern Trust to Akola makes an incredible impact in the lives of the women we serve in the US and abroad,” said Brittany Merrill Underwood, founder and CEO of Akola. “Together, we are educating Neiman Marcus customers on the transformative impact that Akola jewelry products have on the lives of women and children. As the first full-impact nonprofit brand to retail at Neiman Marcus, we are thrilled to have the opportunity to share Akola’s mission with the community and show case our new retail model that transforms lives. We are grateful to partner with Northern Trust to further our mission to empower women across the globe.”

At this time, customers can find an iPad with an Akola Impact Tracker in these Neiman Marcus locations: Lenox Square in Atlanta, Ga.; Charlotte, N.C.; Downtown Dallas and NorthPark Center; Fort Worth; Houston; Palm Beach, Fla.; and The Shops at Willow Bend in Plano, Texas.

“This is an amazing opportunity for our customers to understand their impact in helping woman in poverty,” said Erica Foland, Neiman Marcus Vice President, Divisional Merchandise Manager, Designer Jewelry. “It's the perfect gift - who doesn't want to give or receive a gift that gives back?”

Akola was founded in 2006 by Underwood after she met a Ugandan woman who took care of over 20 children in her home. Underwood learned that thousands of children could be helped by employing women who are unable to find work in their communities. Today, Akola provides training, work opportunities, and education programs to more than 500 women who care for thousands of children in Uganda and Dallas.

The women she employs play an integral part in the production and distribution of Akola’s handcrafted jewelry. The women are given various roles from the creation and assembly of the jewelry to working in Akola’s distribution center in Dallas.

Major League Baseball Players Association Supports Universal Declaration of Player Rights

MLBPA joins with World Players Association in announcing Universal Declaration of Player Rights

SOURCE:Major League Baseball Players Trust

DESCRIPTION:

WASHINGTON, December 14, 2017 /3BL Media/ - Today, Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) Executive Director and 14-year Major League Baseball veteran, Tony Clark, joined executives from some of the world’s leading player associations in unveiling the Universal Declaration of Player Rights (the Declaration) to protect players from ongoing and systemic human rights violations in global sport.

The Declaration, the first comprehensive articulation of athletes’ rights, sets a benchmark for international sporting organizations to meet their obligations to protect, respect and guarantee the fundamental rights of players.

“The MLBPA embraces its role as an affiliate of the World Players Association and we are committed to supporting the Universal Declaration of Player Rights,” stated Clark.  “For more than 50 years Major Leaguers have stood together to advance and protect their rights, and we look forward to working with players’ associations and unions from around the world in seeking to improve the rights of all athletes.”

“The rule books of world sport impose thousands of pages of onerous obligations, but none clearly spell out the internationally recognized human rights of athletes,” saidBrendan Schwab, Executive Director of the World Players Association. “The result is an unjust system of sports law that lacks legitimacy and fails to protect the very people who sit at the heart of sport. We are making it clear that athlete rights can no longer be ignored. They must be able to quickly access justice.”

The implementation of the principles set out in the Declaration will introduce long overdue reforms to the governance of sport. Some examples include:

  • Every player is entitled to equality of opportunity in the pursuit of sport without distinction of any kind and free of discrimination, harassment and violence.
  • Every player has the right to freedom of opinion and expression.
  • The rights of every child athlete must be protected.
  • Every player has the right to share fairly in the economic activity and wealth of his or her sport which players have helped generate, underpinned by fair and just pay and working conditions.
  • Every player has the right to organise and collectively bargain.
  • Every player is entitled to have his or her name, image and performance protected. A player’s name, image and performance may only be commercially utilised with his or her consent, voluntarily given.
  • Every player has the right to a private life, privacy and protection in relation to the collection, storage and transfer of personal data.
  • Every player must be able to access an effective remedy when his or her human rights are not respected and upheld. This is particularly crucial given the highly skilled yet short term and precarious nature of the athletic career.

“Men and women from around the world commit their bodies and minds to sport that in almost every case becomes a full time job. The reality is that while we love the game and the people who play it we can never forget that it is the men and women whose work gives us our sport. These union leaders have dedicated themselves to ensuring that all athletes have basic human rights we all deserve,” said DeMaurice Smith, Executive Director of the NFL Players Association and Executive Committee member of the World Players Association.

The Declaration was developed over the last two years by the more than 100 player associations affiliated to World Players. It has also undergone a thorough review process by human and labour rights experts. It reflects generations of organized players’ experiences and incorporates recent feedback from thousands of players provided through wide-ranging surveys conducted by player associations.

It is also firmly anchored in international human rights law and core International Labor Organization standards.

"The UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights establish a global responsibility for business enterprises of all kinds, including sports governing bodies, to respect human rights,” said Rachel Davis, Managing Director of SHIFT, the leading voice on putting into practice the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs). “The Declaration builds on the UN Guiding Principles in highlighting the roles of sports bodies and states in preventing and addressing impacts on players' human rights. It confirms that players' rights are central to advancing the broader sports and human rights agenda, and that athletes should have a meaningful say in the matter."

The World Players Association’s mission is to embed the fundamental human rights in world sport. The Declaration builds on the UNGPs which have been adopted already by major sporting bodies such as the IOC, FIFA, UEFA and the Commonwealth Games Federation following sustained advocacy by the Sport and Rights Alliance (SRA), of which the World Players Association is a committed partner.

“Athletes’ rights are human rights. We shouldn’t even have to say it, but players are workers and all too often face abuse and discrimination,” said Minky Worden, Director of Global Initiatives at Human Rights Watch, which is a member of the SRA.  “This declaration is a timely reminder that many athletes start their careers as children, that many athletes have to fight for the right to play sports, that athletes have a right to express political views, and to fair and just working conditions and pay.”

“World Players is committed to embedding the human rights of everyone in the delivery of sport. It is encouraging to see that governing bodies are now moving towards this same commitment, and we believe that the fundamental rights of players stated in the document cannot be excluded from this process,” said Jonas Bär-Hoffmann, Director Policy and Strategic Relations of FIFPro, the world soccer players’ union.

One of the ways in which some companies contribute to their communities is through the use of in-kind contributions, typically in donations of the goods or services that the company produces.

While the average company contributes 12% of their budget as in-kind contributions, some organizations contribute significantly more.

Community investment programs can easily align with the goods and services provided by the company and in-kind contributions are an excellent example of this.

Nat Geo WILD Launches Eighth Annual Big Cat Week With Pushes to Mark the Cheetah as Endangered

0
0

SOURCE:21st Century Fox

DESCRIPTION:

On December 10, Nat Geo WILD kicked off its eighth annual Big Cat Week with a week-long programming lineup of stunning and touching specials documenting the lives and plights of big cats around the world. Big Cat Week is an extension of the Big Cats Initiative (BCI), a long-term commitment from National Geographic Society to protect and tell the stories of the planet’s fiercest felines—lions, tigers, jaguars, panthers, leopards and more.

On December 11, researchers with the BCI also released a new study in the open access, peer-reviewed scientific journal, PeerJ, chronicling updated numbers of the cheetah population in southern Africa. The team of 17 conservationists estimate that there are approximately 3,500 adult cheetahs in the region, with a buffer area potentially supporting an optimistic couple of thousand more. In 1975, the same area counted 15,000 cheetahs. The group has come together to demand that the International Union for Conservation of Nature list the cheetah as endangered. "This collaborative, multiyear effort sounds the alarm about the state of cheetah populations in southern Africa, shining a light on the imperative need to protect these majestic predators," said Gary E. Knell, President and CEO, National Geographic Society. "The National Geographic Society is proud to support such a comprehensive assessment and similar efforts aimed at safeguarding our most precious species, their habitats and the planet we call home."

In addition to cheetahs disappearing from over 75% of their historic range, the African lion population has declined 90% in the last 75 years, and fewer than 4,000 tigers remain in the wild. Big cats worldwide are under threat, with local extinctions imminent due to habitat loss, poaching, and conflicts with rural farmers. National Geographic Society’s Big Cats Initiative, founded in 2009 with Explorers-in-Residence Dereck and Beverly Joubert, supports scientists and conservationists working to save and protect big cats in the wild. By partnering with some of the world’s leading big cat experts and researchers, the initiative funds on-the-ground research to understand these species better, and innovative community conservation projects to help both animals and the people around them thrive.

To date, the BCI has supported over 100 unique projects to protect seven iconic big cat species across 27 countries. Enabled by BCI funding, Nat Geo researchers and conservationists have built over 1,600  livestock enclosures to keep livestock, cats, and people from harm; the BCI has saved an estimated 2,600 big cats from death since 2010. Through special campaigns such as Big Cat Week and conservation in the classroom, National Geographic Society and BCI can continue their protection efforts with regular assessment, on-the-ground safeguarding, community education, and global public-awareness movements.

Big Cat Week includes the premiere of exciting new programs featuring world-renowned storytellers. Follow along as Nat Geo photographers Steve Winter and Bertie Gregory track and collect footage of the rarely seen Brazilian jaguars in ‘Jaguar vs. Croc’, famed wildlife filmmaker Bob Poole tells the intimate story of a cheetah mother and her cubs in ‘Man Among Cheetah’, and the secrets of a legendary tigress that famously reigned over western India are revealed in ‘The World’s Most Famous Tiger’. Big Cat Week takes place globally in 140 countries and 37 languages. For more information, on the Big Cats Initiative and how you can get involved, visit causeanuproar.org.

Recognition Reflects Commitment to Environment, Providing Clean Energy

SOURCE:Consumers Energy

DESCRIPTION:

JACKSON, Mich., Dec. 14, 2017 /3BL Media/ – Consumers Energy has been ranked as Michigan’s top company – and ninth in the nation – in Newsweek’s annual “Green Rankings,” a reflection of its commitment to environmental principles that are good for its home state of Michigan and customers. Consumers Energy was flanked by Apple and Johnson & Johnson on the list of top performing companies in the country. California-based Cisco Systems finished first overall.

“This independent, national recognition affirms our efforts to protect the planet we all cherish while providing the energy Michigan needs,” said Patti Poppe, Consumers Energy’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “We are excited to be recognized for our commitment to providing energy from increasingly clean energy sources and taking actions that preserve the natural resources of Michigan.”

Newsweek’s annual survey of companies’ environmental performance looks at such factors as support for clean energy, reduction of carbon emissions and efforts to reduce and divert waste.

Consumers Energy and parent company CMS Energy have taken several recent actions that are good for the environment. The company:

  • Closed seven coal-fired power plants last year – a higher percentage of its coal plants than any investor-owned utility in the U.S.
  • Provides over 10 percent of the electricity that its Michigan customers use from renewable sources such as wind, solar and hydroelectric power.
  • Opened solar power plants in Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo. CMS Energy will install another in Lansing in 2018.
  • Has helped Michigan homes and businesses save over $1 billion on bills through energy efficiency since 2009.
  • Has already reduced water used to generate electricity by 17 percent and expects to reach a 20 percent reduction by 2018. That should save over 100 billion gallons of water per year.
  • Committed to a cumulative waste reduction goal of one million cubic yards of landfill space avoided by 2019, and met that goal in 2017.

“Our mission is to do what’s right, not only what is required, to strengthen the environment and provide clean, reliable energy for our customers,” Poppe said.

Consumers Energy has earned other recent honors for its work to promote clean energy and develop a strong workforce.

Consumers Energy this year scored highest in an independent ranking by Sustainalytics for sustainability performance among U.S. energy providers for the second consecutive year. Consumers Energy also was ranked as Michigan’s best place to work by Forbes magazine and was recognized in Michigan and nationally for its commitment to providing job opportunities for military veterans. Given these honors, it is not surprising that Consumers Energy was also named the Most Trusted Brand in America in the MSI annual customer feedback of combination utilities in America.

About Consumers Energy

Consumers Energy, Michigan’s largest energy provider, is the principal subsidiary of CMS Energy (NYSE: CMS), providing natural gas and/or electricity to 6.7 million of the state’s 10 million residents in all 68 Lower Peninsula counties.

SOURCE:Arrow Electronics

DESCRIPTION:

Arrow Electronics congratulated Matthew Rooda and Abraham Espinoza with the University of Iowa spin-out company SwineTech for winning the top undergraduate award last month at the 2017 Collegiate Inventors Competition. The SwineTech team also walked away with the first-ever Arrow Innovation Prize at the annual competition, which advanced the pair of young innovators to the final round of judging with all expenses paid.

Rooda and Espinoza’s SmartGuard invention helps prevent piglets from being accidentally crushed by their mothers. When a piglet is in distress, the device sends a vibration to a wearable patch on the mother, prompting her to stand up and free her trapped piglet.

The award winners, recent college graduates, are working with Arrow Electronics experts to help scale and grow their startup agricultural technology business.

“Arrow is proud to sponsor the Collegiate Inventors Competition and support the exceptional work of innovative students like SwineTech’s Matthew and Abraham,” said Arrow Corporate Social Responsibility Manager Alex West. “We look forward to helping guide these two young innovators as they scale and grow their business, and to our ongoing partnership with the National Inventors Hall of Fame.”

The Collegiate Inventors Competition was founded in 1990 to recognize and reward top collegiate inventors from all fields of study. Operated by the National Inventors Hall of Fame, the competition showcases emerging student ideas and technologies that will shape our society in the near future.

“Our partnership with Arrow has grown over the past five years into something we are both incredibly proud of. Their support for the Collegiate Inventors Competition was taken to new heights this year with the Arrow Innovation Prize, and we look forward to what’s next,” said National Inventors Hall of Fame Chief Strategic Officer Hannah Paulin.

The Collegiate Inventors Competition specifically recognizes and rewards the innovations, discoveries and research led by university students and their advisors for projects leading to inventions that may have the potential of receiving patent protection. Since its inception, the competition has awarded more than $1 million to winning students for their innovative work and scientific achievement through the help of sponsors like Arrow.

Exploring Best Practices for Human Rights Issues – An Erb Institute/WEC roundtable

By Allison Torres Burtka

SOURCE:University of Michigan: Erb Institute | Business for Sustainability

DESCRIPTION:

The field of sustainability began with environmental issues, which brought about standards and regulations that companies must follow. But human rights issues don’t yet have the same kind of established standards. “It’s still a relatively new dialogue and language for the business community,” said Theresa Loar, an independent consultant who focuses on human rights in business. “While there are excellent UN guiding principles, it’s not the same thing as your government setting certain requirements and standards.

But the onus is on the business world, said Terry Yosie, president and CEO of the World Environment Center. “The multinational corporation is one of the most successful institutions in the world, and it is expected to do more”—which sometimes includes building schools, and helping to maintain health care facilities and sanitation systems, Yosie said. “The reality of contemporary society is that if you are a successful global company, you have to be alert to and aware of these issues.”

The Erb Institute and World Environment Center held a roundtable on “Managing Human Rights Issues in Global Companies: What Are Best Practices and How Are They Implemented?” in Ann Arbor last year, which brought together 26 professionals, including senior company executives, external thought leaders, and Erb Institute faculty and students.  Dr. Michael Posner, New York University professor and chair of the World Economic Forum initiative that published the report Shared Responsibility: A New Paradigm for Supply Chains, delivered the keynote remarks. Among the points he made was that human rights standards should be tailored to each industry.

COLLABORATION
Yosie said that the roundtable speakers repeatedly reinforced the idea that “no single organization can manage this challenge on its own.” So collaboration is key, including partnering with other competitors and trying to enlist NGOs,” he said. “Creativity is a company recognizing its own limitations and looking to other business relationships.” One example is equipping migrant workers with mobile phones, to make it easier for companies to be aware of what’s happening as it happens, he said.

Niemann noted that Ford faced issues with conflict minerals in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. “Highly regulated industries usually fight regulations. Instead, we participated in the development of standards to which we were going to be asked to adhere,” he said. Ford joined existing working groups, and company leadership “had a maturing understanding of what needed to be done. That translated into a business metric to improve the quality of people’s lives—to improve the human condition.”

Loar described being part of a CH2M and civil society team that helped build an engineering and construction industry consortium, called Building Responsibly, that was launched in London in February to promote workers’ rights and welfare, including preventing slavery in the supply chain. It took three years of work with industry leaders, government officials and human rights NGOs, she explained. The resulting consortium aims to improve conditions for workers but also “provide a more consistent delivery platform to our clients,” she said. This business focus means that if clients hire companies in the consortium, they know they will get a consistent approach. “If you want it to be sustainable, to be embedded, you have to build it in,” she added.

Collaboration allows disparate actors to draw on each other’s strengths. “Different organizations possess different assets,” Yosie said, “including money, management skill and credibility.” Because human rights issues are a relatively new part of sustainability efforts, “people are learning on the fly,” Yosie said. “The range of challenges still exceeds the supply of talented collaborators.”

THE ROUNDTABLE
Four Erb students presented two human rights tools for impact assessment and implementation. The participants also explored ways to manage their operations to prevent violations—and to make corrections when they identify violations. The participants developed several conclusions, including:

  • Human rights policies must account for a rapidly changing agenda.
  • Human rights are likely to become more prominent in talent recruitment and retention.
  • Companies need to leverage their own support for human rights protections at market scale.
  • Regulatory standards and human rights enforcement likely will be applied to supply chains, human trafficking and other challenges, and business will be expected to manage human rights issues more aggressively where governments have not acted.
  • The confluence of hyper-transparency and technology can make it easier to identify human rights abuses.
  • The UN Guiding Principles are an excellent starting point, but the definitions and metrics behind them need to be honed to fit specific business operations.

It puts new juice in the battery, like a pep talk from the coach,” Niemann said. “It’s a healthy reminder that we’re not there yet, but we’re not alone in the struggle.” In conversations like these, “people become more aware of the possible,” he said.

"Scotiabank Girls HockeyFest is a fantastic opportunity for young female hockey players to celebrate our nation's favourite game," said Cassie Campbell-Pascall. Expected Graduation: May 2018

Journey to Science

How did you become interested in science?

I had an amazing high school teacher who dressed up as prominent figures in chemistry. She had such a positive personality, which I admired. I thought that if she had that energy and attitude doing chemistry, that’s what I wanted to do. Once I entered undergrad, I realized chemistry was much deeper than costumes. Chemistry is life to me. That’s not a play on words. It requires you to think outside the box all of the time, which is what life is about. You don’t necessarily know everything that’s going to happen, and in chemistry, you don’t know everything that’s going to happen either. So it teaches you more life skills than intellectual skills.

 Academic and Professional Ambitions

What’s the larger significance of your Amgen Scholars research? What’s your ultimate career goal?

I am working on the continuous flow synthesis of Tranexamic acid, a drug that works to prevent the excess loss of blood.  My ultimate career goal is to pursue a government position conducting forensic science research on trace evidence, explosives, and/or arsons.  I am interested in forensic science because I have a passion for combining chemistry with criminal investigative thinking.

Why did you apply to the Amgen Scholars Program?

I didn’t really know anything about Amgen Scholars before applying. At my institution, we have a website that lists internships and Amgen Scholars was on there. I just applied. I am now very eager to get other peers to apply to be Amgen Scholars.

What aspects of the program did you enjoy most?

Amgen Scholars is the best program I have had the opportunity to participate in thus far. The hospitality of Amgen itself is amazing. The Program has allowed me to expand my horizons both intellectually and through networking.

Nestlé leadership, First Lady of Virginia visit Arlington school in continued commitment to nutrition and ending childhood hunger

SOURCE:Nestlé

DESCRIPTION:

ARLINGTON, Va., December 15, 2017 /3BL Media/ - Nestlé USA today announced its partnership with Share Our Strength to support the organization’s school breakfast initiatives as part of its No Kid Hungry campaign. The donation of $250,000 deepens Nestlé’s commitment to help children live healthier lives. In the spirit of today’s announcement, Nestlé CFO and Chief Transformation Officer Steve Presley will visit a local Arlington elementary school, accompanied by First Lady of Virginia Dorothy McAuliffe, who has long shared the same commitment.

Today’s visit to Oakridge Elementary School will raise awareness of the benefits of school breakfast programs. One in seven children in Virginia struggle with hunger, and research demonstrates the importance of providing breakfast to children and youth. Nestlé’s support of the No Kid Hungry campaign in Arlington County will ensure that local students in underserved areas have access to a nutritious breakfast and will facilitate important nutrition habits.

This partnership also demonstrates Nestlé’s commitment to the Arlington community, where, beginning in early 2018, it will operate its new U.S. headquarters. This support comes months ahead of the company’s official relocation.

“Nestlé’s commitment to a healthier future starts with ensuring that kids in the communities where we live and work have access to nutritious foods and can build the healthy habits that will serve them throughout their lives,” said Steve Presley, Nestlé USA’s Chief Financial Officer. “We are eager to become an active community member here in Arlington, which is why we’re so excited to begin supporting Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign even before we’ve officially moved in.”

More than 1,000 schools in Virginia currently have school breakfast programs. First Lady McAuliffe’s support has been critical to the No Kid Hungry program’s success in Virginia, building strong public-private partnerships to support the organization’s initiatives.

“Thanks to our strong public-private partnerships and commitment to evidence-based programs to expand the role of schools as nutrition hubs, Virginia has become a model for the nation in ending childhood hunger,” said First Lady Dorothy McAuliffe. “Now more than ever, we are proving the connection between school meals and student success, and providing children with the fuel they need to thrive in and out of the classroom.”

Nestlé’s partnership with Share Our Strength will help add an additional 10,000 children to the school breakfast program in Virginia and support the program’s continued strength.

“Ensuring that all children get to start the day with a nutritious breakfast today means that we’re building a more economically competitive workforce for tomorrow,” said Tom Nelson, President & CEO at Share Our Strength. “When kids get the food they need to thrive, they grow up smarter, healthier and stronger–and that means a smarter, healthier, stronger Virginia.”

Nestlé’s effort with Share Our Strength includes support for low-income communities in Cleveland, Ohio and Oakland, Calif., to ensure that as many kids as possible in those areas have access to a healthy start and the tools for healthy nutrition habits.

Nestlé’s support of Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign is part of the company’s broader initiative to foster healthy lifestyles for kids and secure a healthy future for the communities in which Nestlé employees live and work.

A Canadian Opportunity: Companies Predict Community Investment Budgets Will Increase in 2018

SOURCE:SiMPACT Strategy Group

DESCRIPTION:

TORONTO, December 15, 2017 /3BL Media/- Canada's leading corporations widely recognize the business opportunity in putting their brands and resources behind worthy causes, and many plan to increase their community investments, according to a new study issued by Imagine Canada and LBG (London Benchmarking Group) Canada.

The 2017 Corporate Community Investment Leadership study expects corporate giving will advance in 2018, driven by economic growth, heightened appreciation of community investment, customer expectations and high rates of employee interest.

The 56 companies in the study invested $468 million in communities in 2016. Forty-four per cent indicated their community investments would increase in the coming year with only 26 per cent predicting a decrease.

Community investment trends:

  • Many corporations linked community investment with innovation. Almost six-in-ten participating companies (59 per cent) reported community investment activities in at least one key area of the Federal Government Innovation Plan. Education-related community projects were the most common innovation focus.
  • In 2016, companies in the study reported 1.8 million hours of employee time volunteered with an average of 31 hours per employee. Of reported hours, 13 per cent occurred during working hours at an estimated value of $8.24 million.
  • Long-term partnerships with charities and community organizations are being leveraged, with 87% of companies in the study reporting multi-year projects within their giving strategy.
  • Community footprints are being deepened by regularly engaging stakeholders (employees, customers, suppliers and government partners) in community investment activities. Most companies (86%) reported leveraging employee contributions as a part of their strategy.

"This report profiles Canada's leaders in corporate community investment," says Bruce MacDonald, President and CEO of Imagine Canada. "It's a snapshot of approaches businesses of all sizes and levels of charitable giving can leverage for their community investment. Our hope is that the study is widely used by companies as they pursue their community aspirations."

Companies participating in the study are Imagine Canada Caring Companies and the LBG Canada network of companies.

"Companies within the LBG Canada network have invested more than $3 billion in community since 2007, more than $4 billion if employee and other stakeholder contributions are considered," says Stephanie Robertson, President and CEO of SiMPACT Strategy Group and Founder of LBG Canada. "The purpose of the LBG Canada program is to support community investment professionals in demonstrating the value of their work - for the community and for the business. We offer a snapshot of the information readily available to corporate Canada, in support of the goal of creating value through community investment."

DESCRIPTION:

During 2017, we have seen many brands stepping into divisive conversations sharing different perspectives, spreading inclusivity and attempting to offset unkindness. Acknowledging the divisiveness that our nation faced this year, KIND has launched a storytelling campaign to counter the negativity and unite the country despite opposing opinions we all may have.

In its new #moreKIND campaign, KIND Healthy Snacks is inviting consumers to partake in the brand’s mission of creating a kinder world by pointing out the difference between just being nice and being kind. Founder and CEO of KIND explains, “We’ve all been overwhelmed by the historic rifts tearing our country apart. For years, KIND has explored how difficult it is to step out of one’s comfort zone and practice kindness — especially towards someone with whom you disagree. Now, more than ever, that extra effort is required to rediscover our shared humanity and tackle challenges related to misunderstanding and intolerance.” To showcase what it takes to truly be kind, the snack maker has created a video series, More Than Nice, in which viewers are introduced to No More Deaths, a group who leaves gallons of water for those trekking across the desert attempting to cross the border.
