Infographic: Smithfield Foods, Food Safety and Quality

SOURCE:Smithfield Foods

DESCRIPTION:

Our food safety philosophy is actually quite simple: If we don’t feel confident about serving a product to our own families, we’re not going to sell it to consumers.

Producing safe, high-quality, and nourishing food is fundamental to our company’s very existence. Our customers and consumers put their trust in us every time they sit down to a meal of one of our many products. Food safety starts on the farm, where we have rigorous systems in place to raise healthy animals. It continues at the processing plants, where we follow meticulous and exacting procedures that allow us to produce the safest pork products.

An Amgen Scholars Journey From Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México to the University of Tokyo

"I think that one of the best ways to learn is by conducting scientific research. It makes you aware that scientific knowledge is dynamic and constantly advancing, always challenging current knowledge."

SOURCE:Amgen Foundation

DESCRIPTION:

Julia Carrasco Zanini Sánchez

Mexico City, Mexico

Host University: The University of Tokyo

Home University: Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México

Amgen Scholar Year: 2017

Major: Bachelor's Degree in Basic Biomedical Research

Expected Graduation: 2018

Journey to Science

How did you become interested in science?

When I was a high school student, I took a serious interest in biology and chemistry, and I always asked my teachers: "But how did they find that out?" This was my first approach to scientific discovery and, from there on, I made the decision to get a science-related degree. Upon my entry to university, I started to work on basic science research projects, however I realized that I wanted to do research that would have an actual impact in human health and disease.

Academic and Professional Ambitions

What’s the larger significance of your Amgen Scholars research? What’s your ultimate career goal?

My project at the University of Tokyo focused on understanding the involvement of epigenetic regulation in trophoblast (embryonic cells) stem cell differentiation. As trophoblast cells are directly exposed to maternal blood, they are particularly susceptible to undergo modifications in their epigenetic status in response to the maternal environment. Understanding the impact of such modification will provide knowledge into fetal adaptations and alterations in response to adverse intrauterine conditions. After I graduate, I plan to pursue a Ph.D. with a focus on translational research.

Why did you apply to the Amgen Scholars Program?

I think that one of the best ways to learn is by conducting scientific research. It makes you aware that scientific knowledge is dynamic and constantly advancing, always challenging current knowledge. Therefore, I thought that the Amgen Scholars Program would be a great opportunity to learn and get involved in current research questions, still unanswered, in stem cell biology.

What aspects of the program did you enjoy most? What do you love about the Amgen Scholars Program?

The program provided me with the opportunity to discuss my research project and results with all my lab members and to propose experiments to develop and further understand my research questions. I enjoyed meeting people from all around the world who are enthusiastic about collaborating with a common objective to further develop scientific knowledge. Creating these networks will be very important for the future generation of scientists.

Community Investment Alignment With Canadian Innovation Objectives: New Report From LBG Canada and Imagine Canada

SOURCE:SiMPACT Strategy Group

DESCRIPTION:

TORONTO, December 8, 2017 /3BL Media/ -- Canada's leading corporations widely recognize the business opportunity in putting their brands and resources behind worthy causes, and many plan to increase their community investments, according to a new study issued by Imagine Canada and LBG (London Benchmarking Group) Canada.

The 2017 Corporate Community Investment Leadership study expects corporate giving will advance in 2018, driven by economic growth, heightened appreciation of community investment, customer expectations and high rates of employee interest.

The 56 companies in the study invested $468 million in communities in 2016. Forty-four per cent indicated their community investments would increase in the coming year with only 26 per cent predicting a decrease.

Community investment trends:

  • Many corporations linked community investment with innovation. Almost six-in-ten participating companies ( 59 per cent) reported community investment activities in at least one key area of the Federal Government Innovation Plan. Education-related community projects were the most common innovation focus.
  • In 2016, companies in the study reported 1.8M hours of employee time voluntered with an average of 31 working hours per employee. Of reported hours, 13 per cent occurred during working hours at an estimated value of $8.24M.
  • Long-term partnerships with charities and community organizations are being leveraged, with 87 per cent of companies in the study reporting multi-year projects within their giving stratgy.
  • Community footprints are being deepened by regularly engaging stakeholders (employees, customers, suppliers and government partners) in community investment activities. Most companies (86 per cent) reported leveraging employee contributions as part of their strategy.

"This report profiles Canada's leaders in corporate community investment," says Bruce MacDonald, President and CEO of Imagine Canada. "It's a snapshot of approaches businesses of all sizes and levels of charitable giving can leverage for their community investment. Our hope is that the study is widely used by companies as they pursue their community aspirations."

Companies participating in the study are Imagine Canada Caring Companies and the LBG Canada network of companies.

"Companies within the LBG Canada network have invested more than $3 billion in community since 2007, more than $4 billion if employee and other stakeholder contributions are considered," says Stephanie Robertson, President and CEO of SiMPACT Strategy Group and Founder of LBG Canada. "The purpose of the LBG Canada program is to support community investment professionals in demonstrating the value of their work - for the community and for the business. We offer a snapshot of the information readily available to corporate Canada, in support of the goal of creating value through community investment."

The full study is available online at: https://www.lbg-canada.ca/a-canadian-opportunity-2017-report/

Both English and French copies of the report are available.

Patagonia Takes on the President and Rallies Consumers in Support of Bears Ears

SOURCE:Cone Communications

DESCRIPTION:

Patagonia is no stranger to bold Purpose marketing campaigns. From “Don’t Buy this Jacket” to “100% for the Planet,” this is a brand that is not afraid to take a risk to stand up for what it believes in. This week, we saw the company take its boldest stance yet, not only directly calling out the President of the United States for “an illegal move” but also announcing it will sue the administration. Yet, for those who track the company, this endeavor should not come as a huge surprise – in fact, the latest announcement is just the next phase of a multi-year consumer engagement campaign, calling on its informed, loyal consumer base for support.

Following this week’s White House announcement which would reduce the size of Bears Ears National Monument and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Patagonia amped up its on-going efforts aimed at protecting the status of the area. The brand’s homepage transformed into a black background stating “The President Stole Your Land.” The site then directed visitors to learn more about how the monuments will be effected, which groups are fighting to protect the land and prompted them to act by tweeting pre-drafted tweets using the hashtag #MonumentalMistake. And fans are making their voices heard. Since launching, the campaign has already inspired over 120,000 people to take action, sending more than 70,000 tweets to President Trump and Secretary Zinke.

Booz Allen Plays Career Matchmaker for Military Spouses

SOURCE:Booz Allen Hamilton

DESCRIPTION:

Military spouses are the backbone of military families. Studies show that supporting military spouse employment and closing the military spouse un/underemployment gap not only strengthens our nation’s economy, but also improves military readiness.

But for military spouses who want to work outside the home, the frequent relocations common to military life can seem an insurmountable barrier to building and maintaining a career. As a result, many military spouses find themselves unemployed or underemployed.

To help military spouses connect with military-friendly companies, Booz Allen’s Military Spouse Forum (MSF) hosted its third annual panel discussion featuring military spouses and the companies that employ them. As one of the firm’s featured events celebrating November’s Military Family Appreciation month, this year’s panel event, Supporting Military Spouse Employment and Keeping our Country #MilFamStrong, showed the conversation from both the employer and employee perspectives.

Event speakers shared valuable insight gained from their own personal experiences, and outlined military spouse employment and retention best practices for the benefit of both employers and military spouses who can implement them.

Recognized not only as a military spouse friendly employer, but also as an industry leader in military spouse employment and retention, Booz Allen Hamilton has long-standing commitment to the military community. Booz Allen CEO Horacio D. Rozanski cited the Military Spouse Employment Initiative as one of two key diversity initiatives in a pledge to advance diversity and inclusion in the workplace as a part of CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion:

“At Booz Allen, one of our corporate values is collective ingenuity. We believe in harnessing the power of diversity and empowering people to bring the best of who they are to every challenge or problem. When we do so—in our workplaces and communities—there is no limit to what we can achieve together.” Horacio D. Rozanski, president and CEO of Booz Allen.

North Sea Oil & Gas - Fueling Great Accumulations of Wealth for the Long-Term Benefit of Norway's Future Generations

G&A's Sustainability Highlights (5.12.2017)

SOURCE:Governance & Accountability Institute, Inc.

DESCRIPTION:

The foundation for the significant progress made in so many spheres of society in the 20th Century was...Oil!  The oil-producing nations of the world amassed great wealth with the marketing of oil and petroleum-derived products; those products enabled fantastic progress to be made in industry, government, agriculture, the consumer sector...throughout our modern society.

A number of formerly categorized as "still developing nations" of the early 20th Century years became quite wealthy when oil deposits were discovered or exploited on their lands -- especially countries like Saudi Arabia and the United Emirates, and Kuwait and Iran and Iraq.

North Sea oil and gas exploration would bring great wealth to certain western nations in the second half of the Century.  One of these was Norway, with significant reserves identified (and exploited) beneath the often storm North Sea waters.

A strategic decision was reached internally in 1990 -- a stream of "surplus" revenues would be directed toward the country's Sovereign Wealth Fund (SWF), officially "the Government Pension Fund" - this inflow began in 1996 and since, the SWF has become the largest Sovereign Wealth Fund in the world. (There is a separate internal fund also receiving funds for domestic investment.)

The Norway SWF invests in 77 countries; the portfolio allocation is in equities (62%), fixed-income (34%) and real estate (3%). The return on investment in 2016 was almost 7%.

The Fund states that it is a "Responsible Investor," with a mandate to integrate responsible investment activities into the management of the fund.

Sign of the times:  In the flow of news reports and commentaries about the trend to minimize or dis-invest shares of fossil-fuel companies in investment portfolios, comes news from the Nordic nation [the advice] that the Norway SWF should scale back or drop investments in oil & gas stocks.

The Norges Bank, which manages the SWF's US$1 trillion in AUM, advised that such a step would make Norway less vulnerable to a permanent slide in Oil & Gas prices.  About 6% of the AUM is now in the sector (in such companies as Shell, BP, ExxonMobil). Shell contributed the most to the fund's return in 2016.

Important note:  There were holdings in about 9,000 public companies in 2016; the average holding in the world's listed companies was about 1.3% to 2%, and up to 5% in 28 companies. (Nestle is the largest holding in a single issuer.)

In North America, holdings are in 2,268 companies; 2,107 bonds from 582 issuers; and in 400 (office & retail) properties. Oil and Gas performed best in 2016, Norges Bank reported (29%).  One investment of note is Florida-based NextEra Energy, a U.S. company "driving the transition from coal-based power to clean electricity."

All of this is sort of inside baseball; the SWF is owned by the central government for the benefit of future generations; the Norges Bank operations are part of the government; the Finance Ministry will review the suggestions.  We will likely see important decisions taken by June 2019, according to the BBC.

It will be interesting to watch as the world's largest Sovereign Wealth Fund and one of the world's key responsible investors -- all integral parts of one of the world's important oil & gas countries -- make decisions on fossil fuel investments going forward.

BBC highlights of the latest developments are in our Top Story this issue. And there is more detailed information for you in the Norges Bank Annual Report for 2016.

Fresh Start Mobile Showers Provides Daily Showers for Las Vegas Homeless Population

SOURCE:Las Vegas Sands

DESCRIPTION:

Looking for a change, Jameel Milligan, age 36, moved from Philadelphia, where he worked in the chemical industry, to Las Vegas.  He was certain he’d have no problem finding a job at one of the many resorts.

“I wanted to start over and I thought since there are so many different types of jobs at all the casinos, I’d have no problem finding something,” he said.  “I didn’t realize that you need various licenses and permits in order to do certain jobs within the casinos.  I came here with no plan, just on a whim.”

With certain permits taking over 19 weeks to obtain for most casino workers, Milligan found himself in a situation he didn’t expect – homeless and unable to work.  Homelessness affects over 6,400 individuals on any given night in Southern Nevada.  Las Vegas has the nation’s sixth largest population of homeless individuals among major cities in the United States.  One challenge that many experiencing homelessness face is keeping up their personal hygiene.  In response to this basic need that many of us take for granted, Sands Cares, the corporate giving program of Las Vegas Sands, and Clean the World partnered to build the Fresh Start Mobile Showers.  The unit travels to various locations in Las Vegas serving the homeless to provide showers, hygiene supplies and other resources.

“I found out about the showers by accident,” Milligan said.  “Someone told me about the showers being at different locations so I showed up at Care Complex on the first day and had my first shower.  I remember there were only two people that day that showed up to use the services.  I haven’t missed a shower yet.  I just go to all of the locations and have my daily shower.”

Clean the World has seen a steady increase in clients and use of the showers and services since beginning operations of the Fresh Start Mobile Showers in August of this year.  Due to the large amount of people using the showers, they offered Milligan a permanent job assisting with the operation of the shower unit.

“It’s been a blessing becoming a permanent employee for the showers,” he said.  “I never had to live on the streets.  I’ve always been able to find a safe place to sleep through Catholic Charities.  This just shows that there are a lot of people out here who care.  Once I save enough money, I’ll be able to get a place of my own.  Things are starting to work in my favor.”

What Is Effective Leadership? 'It Comes Down to Four Things'

0
0

SOURCE:PNC Financial Services Group

DESCRIPTION:

Pittsburgh Quarterly magazine asked five high-profile executives, including Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer, Bill Demchak.

What do you believe to be the most important ingredients of successful leadership? Bill's interview from the magazine is below.

Effective leadership can take many forms, but in my experience, it comes down to four things.

First, good leaders have the ability to assemble teams of talented people and to harness the power in the diversity of thought and experiences among them. I’ve never seen a group of people who all look and think the same do anything truly transformative. As a leader, I want to build teams of people who challenge convention and who challenge each other to elevate their thinking, transcend their individual limitations, and come up with new solutions that solve problems and create value for the people we serve.

Second, good leaders commit their organizations to doing right by the people they serve, and they establish accountability from the top. I can’t ask employees throughout my company to take responsibility for fixing problems and delivering great customer experiences if I’m not committed to doing so myself. No matter where you are within an organization, taking ownership and solving problems is one of the surest paths to establishing yourself as an effective leader.

Third, good leaders invest in the future. They understand and anticipate customers’ needs and build solutions to meet them through time. They are curious and passionate about figuring out what’s next in service of their customers. They work toward the future by developing the skills of their employees and by giving people opportunities to stretch, take risks and grow into leaders themselves.

Lastly, good leaders aren’t afraid to admit mistakes or weaknesses because they know that leadership is about always working to be better each day than you were the day before. And when we can be honest with ourselves and others about those areas where we have room for improvement, we’re more likely to invest ourselves and our resources in being better tomorrow.

And don’t forget the environment over the holidays. Enjoy the holiday season, while being mindful of the planet, with these tips and tricks.

  • Reinvent Your Leftovers- Utilize holiday leftovers in more ways than one when the celebration is over. Avoid food waste by turning scraps into soups, casseroles, sandwiches and more.
  • Freeze the Feast- Enjoy holiday foods longer by freezing leftovers. Place leftovers in single portions for easy enjoyment later on. The freezer is great for foods like meat and other poultry that may spoil quicker.
  • Reduce Plate Size- Minimize waste by utilizing a smaller plate for holiday meals. Eating off a smaller plate encourages guests to take less food and reduces the likelihood of waste occurring.
  • Potluck Power- Invite family and friends to bring their own dish to holiday celebrations, to avoid excessive cooking. Store potluck dishes in on-the-go containers for guests to take home and enjoy later, once the party is over.

Cisco’s FY17 CSR Report: Accelerating Global Problem Solving

0
0

SOURCE:Cisco Systems Inc.

DESCRIPTION:

We live in a digitally connected world where anyone can be a global problem solver, addressing critical issues like unemployment, hunger, poverty, climate change, and income inequality. By combining the power of technology with innovative, entrepreneurial, and passionate people, we can accelerate solutions that create positive and lasting change.

Last year, Cisco set an ambitious new goal: harnessing the power of global problem solvers to positively impact the lives of one billion people by 2025.

We set out to achieve this goal and make this impact in three ways:

  • First, we want to help people build the technology and business skills needed to lead, innovate, and create in the digital economy
  • Second, we invest in breakthrough, early-stage, technology solutions that address social and environmental challenges and have the potential to be scaled, replicated, and sustainable
  • And third, we work with governments, educational institutions, nonprofit organizations, and other partners to support progress and drive inclusive growth

This work has already helped us positively impact 232 million people–including more than 154 million in our last fiscal year alone.

In addition to impacting one billion people by 2025, Cisco also strives to lead on environmental sustainability in our operations and supply chain.

Our 2017 Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) report is a testament to the progress we have made, and of course, to the work still left to do.

In FY17, 1.3 million students in 180 countries built their digital skills through Cisco Networking Academy—bringing our cumulative total to 7.8 million students since 1997. Our nonprofit partners used our grant investments to positively impact 154 million people across the globe, pushing us towards our goal to reach one billion people by 2025. We also hit a huge environmental goal, reducing our Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 41% compared with our FY07 baseline, keeping us on track for a 60% reduction by 2022.

We’re proud of these numbers, but they only tell part of the story. They sit alongside the achievements of Global Problem Solvers—Cisco’s employees, partners, and customers, who are tackling some of the big challenges affecting our industry and society as a whole.

Take for example, Cisco Networking Academy, our biggest and longest-running CSR program, which celebrates 20 years of changing worlds this year. Nineteen years ago, teachers Jeff Mason and Rod Thompson brought Networking Academy to students at Newport High School in Bellevue, Washington. While 78 percent of students in the Newport High program earned Cisco certifications last year, what’s particularly unique about this program is the experiential learning that happens far beyond the school.

Each year, the teachers take students to work in underserved communities around the world for two weeks, developing global problem solvers in the process. Past trips have benefited people in Antigua, Slovakia, Turkey, and Uganda. Here, the students apply their networking and problem-solving skills as they design and build 25-30 Internet-connected computer labs in 10 days. The hands-on technology experience is invaluable, but the impact this program has on the students and the communities they touch is far greater.

Another example of Cisco’s global leadership in action is our Connected Conservation program. Rhino poaching poses serious economic and ecological problems in Africa, with three animals lost per day to poachers seeking rhino horns worth more than their weight in gold. A team of Cisco problem solvers, working with our partners at Dimension Data, built a solution that uses our technology to track human movement in game reserves, flagging suspicious activity. Currently being piloted at a South African game reserve, the program has helped reduce poaching by 96 percent since 2015.

At Cisco, we believe that anyone can become a global problem solver, and we’re turning that opportunity into action.

Erb Featured Business Sustainability Case Study: Hampton Creek's Vegan Take on Mayo

0

SOURCE:University of Michigan: Erb Institute | Business for Sustainability

DESCRIPTION:

Description:
In 2013, Hampton Creek entered the mayonnaise marketplace with the world’s first plant-based, vegan mayonnaise “Just Mayo”. The creation of an egg-free version of mayonnaise had the potential to upset the market, especially for Unilever’s Hellmann’s brand. The case provides an overview of Unilever’s role in the mayonnaise market, highlighting its commitment to innovation and sustainability, as well as its analysis of Hampton Creek as both an opportunity and a threat. Students are asked to examine this complex problem with Unilever and grapple with the tension between encouraging innovation and progress, while protecting a key source of revenue from a new market entrant.

Teaching Objectives:
After reading and discussing the material, students should:

  • Analyze and estimate the impact of the current health movement on the food industry in the United States
  • Assess the decision to file a lawsuit against Hampton Creek
  • Weigh the benefits and drawbacks of “carrot vs. stick” approaches to responding to competition
  • Assess how to succeed in the face of a changing marketplace

Family is Our Recipe

SOURCE:Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption

DESCRIPTION:

For this guest blog, Foundation staff members interviewed Karen about her foster care adoption journey and her daughter, Monarika, who was adopted through the Foundation’s Wendy’s Wonderful Kids program.

When Monarika’s adoption was finalized in April, 2017, her new sisters surprised her with custom t-shirts that said “Team Hedges.” Everyone in the court room wore one, and when the judge announced the adoption was official, they took off their jackets to reveal the wording on the back: “Lifetime Member.” They wanted Monarika to truly know that this was her forever family.

Today, Monarika is thriving. She works at her local Wendy’s restaurant, where her manager refers to her as their best worker. Monarika says she’s proud to work for a company that is so invested in helping to get children adopted from foster care.

When Monarika and her mom first met, there was an immediate connection. “I knew the instant I met Karen that I wanted her to be my mom,” Monarika shared.

Karen says Monarika was 17 and had just entered a residential program for teen girls. Teen girls are often placed in these programs because it can be hard to find a foster home that will take an older child. Karen happened to work at the facility where Monarika was now living. As they worked together, Monarika began to trust and confide in Karen – more than anything, she wanted to be adopted. Monarika moved in with Karen and her family the following summer – she fit right in.

“A lot of people want to adopt younger children, but what they don’t realize is that teenagers need families too. They need to know that they are safe, loved and accepted,” Karen shared. “People asked me why I would want to adopt a teenager. Just because she is almost 18 doesn’t mean she doesn’t need and want a family!”

Monarika is just one of more than 110,000 reasons why Wendy’s Wonderful Kids, a signature program of the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, is so important. Through this program, the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption provides funds to adoption agencies across the country to hire specially-trained adoption recruiters whose sole mission is to find loving, adoptive homes for children like Monarika. And, the program works. Since 2004, the Foundation has facilitated more than 6,500 adoptions. But the work is far from done. There are more than 110,000 children waiting in foster care, who, like Monarika, simply want to be a “lifetime member” of a family all their own.

The Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption is committed to dramatically increasing the number of adoptions from foster care. To support a loving family for every child waiting in foster care, visit http://davethomasfoundation.org.

Schneider Electric VIDEO | Envisioning a Sustainable Future Through Innovation

by Jean-Pascal Tricoire

SOURCE:Schneider Electric

DESCRIPTION:

Regarding climate, I am neither optimistic nor pessimistic. I am an activist.

The big picture is clear. It is our corporate duty to fight climate change brought on by carbon emissions. But we are running against the clock and we must act now. As the Paris climate agreement maps out, we must limit global warming to 2°C above preindustrial levels.

Globally, that means cutting emissions in half by 2050. During the same period, as world energy consumption will go up by almost 50%[1], we must become three times more energy efficient to steer the course towards a better climate outlook. This collective mobilization includes Schneider Electric, our customers, the overall markets, other sectors, and consumers from Shanghai to New York and all points in between. We’re all energy stakeholders. We are in this together so future generations can enjoy a clean planet.

As a technology company, Schneider Electric brings to the table solutions that drive energy efficiency and long-term sustainability. We’re committed to ensuring that Life Is On™ for everyone, everywhere, and at every moment. This corporate promise also means helping the 2.3 billion people worldwide who do not have access to reliable electricity.

Innovative technologies will lead the way

Climate leadership is a great opportunity for innovation. Technologies enable us to rethink the way the world traditionally has dealt with energy and greenhouse (GHG) gas emissions. Now buildings, for example, can eliminate massive amounts of energy waste and carbon output if they have the right tools to see it. For example, we have helped AEG, one of the world’s leading sports and entertainment presenters, cut GHG emissions by 14% over its 2010 baseline.

Even energy-intensive industries such as cement play a role, too. China National Building Material Group (CNBM) improved its overall energy efficiency by ten percent.

EcoStruxure™ is the common thread across our main markets. This architecture combines energy, automation, and software to accelerate efficiencies. It leverages Internet of Things advancements such as mobility and sensing to meet the demand for more sustainable and connected energy. It is our technological answer to the global call for climate action.

Our 10 carbon commitments

We must be a model for our customers and other companies. At COP21 in December 2015, we pledged to become a net-zero company by 2030. Our 10 COP21 commitments guide our efforts. They also align to the Paris climate agreement and contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Five of these commitments are taken from our 2015-2017 Planet & Society barometer, Schneider’s internal sustainable development scorecard. It highlights three-year commitments to specific objectives to keep our stakeholders informed of the company’s progress each quarter. Schneider’s latest Strategy & Sustainability Highlights report shows how we’re doing. For example, we have pledged to:

  • Reduce our own energy intensity and transportation emissions each by 3.5% per year
  • Ensure CO2 impact quantification for 100% of new large customer projects
  • Avoid 120,000 tons of CO2 through circular economy maintenance, retrofit, and “end-of-life” services

The report also illustrates ways we are closing the energy gap. To date, 4.2 million households at the base of the pyramid have access to energy thanks to our solutions and programs. We also have facilitated training in the electricity trades in emerging economies. We have trained more than 120,000 people in more than 20 countries since 2009. And this year, we expanded our Access to Energy training program to include entrepreneurship, including mobilization for female entrepreneurship in Brazil.

A sustainable future on the horizon

We used to be among a group of corporate outliers with a rare “green for growth” approach towards building a sustainable economy. Now most companies can envision the possibility of a net-zero society in our lifetime and are taking steps in that direction. Profit without sustainability is not acceptable. We must act immediately for a better future.

Automotive Industry Updates Its Guiding Principles to Enhance Sustainability in the Supply Chain

Updated document provides guidance to automotive supplier partners concerning the latest industry expectations in sustainability

SOURCE:Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG)

DESCRIPTION:

SOUTHFIELD, Mich., and BRUXELLES, December 12, 2017 /3BL Media/ - The Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG) and Drive Sustainability today announced an updated version of the “Automotive Industry Guiding Principles to Enhance Sustainability Performance in the Supply Chain.” This collaboration between AIAG, Drive Sustainability and key automotive organizations provides guidance to our valued supplier partners concerning the latest industry expectations. Additionally, a supplementary reference document was created to provide further explanation and examples for the updated principles.

Along with AIAG and Drive Sustainability, BMW Group, Daimler, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Group, Ford Motor Company, General Motors, Honda, Jaguar Land Rover, Nissan, Scania, Toyota, Volkswagen Group, Volvo Cars, and Volvo Group, all participated in this revision of the 2014 document, and in creating the additional explanatory resource. This extraordinary alignment between automakers came out of a need to address issues relevant to the automotive industry today, and to speak with a unified voice on the importance of a sustainable, ethical supply chain.

With these goals in mind, Steve Kiefer, senior vice president, General Motors Global Purchasing and Supply Chain, says, “GM views the pursuit of positive environmental and social impact throughout the supply chain as a global priority.” Kiefer goes on to explain, “GM is focused on efficient business with our global partners, and AIAG’s guiding principles ensure that the entire auto industry is working together to use our scale and resources for good.”

The amended text augments previously stated positions, and is more inclusive of principles that reflect current industry concerns pertaining to business ethics, human rights, working conditions, and environmental leadership. As Tanya Bolden, director of corporate responsibility, products & services, AIAG, explains: “We are pleased that the effort initiated a decade ago by the North American automakers has grown in scope and global acceptance. Due to the degree of complexity in today’s automotive supply chain, it is more important than ever that we all work together, and communicate these vitally important issues in a clear and unified voice.”

Updates to the Principles include a number of new expectations, as well as a brief description of each point.

In one example, Business Ethics, new guidelines state that companies are expected to responsibly source raw materials and to work to minimize the risk of counterfeit or diverted parts and materials in their products. The importance of transparency in accurate quality reports, financial reports, and filings is also emphasized, as well as the need for companies to disclose both financial and non-financial information, according to regulations and industry practices. A final bullet point explains that companies need to establish processes so that employee concerns can be raised anonymously, without fear of retaliation.

Certain areas have also been reworked and expanded upon in the Environment section. Additions include a statement on air quality, which stipulates that companies must work to monitor and eliminate (as much as possible) emissions contributing to air pollution, as well as a note on managing chemicals responsibly to minimize or eliminate restricted substances.

As Tom Lake, vice president, Honda North America Purchasing, notes: “Automakers have a responsibility to work together and offer guidance concerning the expectations we have as an industry, and to highlight the importance of strong governance structures to safeguard business ethics. These updated Guiding Principles and Practical Guidance documents are a great resource for our supplier partners to reference as they make important decisions that impact their business and ours.”

To further elaborate upon the guidelines outlined in the Principles, the supplementary text, “Global Automotive Sustainability Practical Guidance,” addresses the practicalities and legalities of meeting industry expectations. For instance, to create a safe and healthy working environment—one of the fundamental values noted in the Principles—companies should educate their employees on emergency and evacuation procedures. They should also offer personal protective equipment when required, as well as focus on training for machine safety. Other examples offered include the need to maintain legally required permits and licenses, and verify that fire detection, alarm, and suppression systems are in place and in working order at all times.

“The new release of the Guiding Principles and Practical Guidance is part of Drive Sustainability’s enhanced commitment to sustainability,” Stefan Crets, executive director, CSR Europe, and facilitator of Drive Sustainability explains. “Drive Sustainability is a partnership of automotive companies that made a pledge to move to the next level of sustainability and supply chain management. We are happy to collaborate with AIAG and its members to put the basis of a global automotive strategy on supply chain sustainability. This is the foundation to strengthen Drive Sustainability activities like local supplier capability networks (in China & Turkey), and raw materials actions.”

Additional resources like the tools, trainings, and workshops AIAG offers, also help companies of all sizes meet sustainability performance expectations. Free online courses and assessments such as the Supply Chain Sustainability eLearning and the Supply Chain Sustainability Knowledge Assessment (Practitioner Level), along with additional options for AIAG members, all support the same industry goals regarding the social and environmental performance of the supply chain.
