Angels Outfielder is #GoingToBat for Youth Where He Lives and Works

SOURCE:Major League Baseball Players Trust

DESCRIPTION:

Los Angeles Angels outfielder Cameron Maybin‘s 10-year career has taken him through Detroit, Florida, San Diego, Atlanta, Detroit again and now Anaheim, but the speedy outfielder has not lost track of his roots.

Maybin, who recently turned 30, hails from Asheville, N.C., and he spent the 2016 holiday season in his hometown; but instead of just visiting with family and friends, he and his wife, Courtney, had a bigger idea in mind—the creation and launch of The Maybin Mission.

The Maybin Mission is still in its early stages, but the message is clear. According to its official website, Maybin’s foundation “focuses on enriching the lives of inner city youth.”  The site also states  that “through positive play, education and cultural programming, the Maybins are dedicated to impacting the communities in which they live and serve.”

If the early going is any indication, The Maybin Mission is sure to make a profound difference in the lives of children in the places the Maybins call home.

SOURCE:Booz Allen Hamilton

DESCRIPTION:

As a former Marine Corps Cobra pilot, Kurt Scherer used his experiences to chart a different course after the military. Seeking employment at a place that builds on one’s internal moral compass, Kurt landed at Booz Allen Hamilton where he piloted and now leads the firm’s Innovation Center. With over a third of its workforce as veterans, the firm has developed a specialized outreach program that actively recruits integrity-grounded, mission-focused professionals. Given its commitment to hiring and retaining former military servicemen and women, it’s no surprise that the firm was once again named as an employer of choice for veterans.

For the third consecutive year, Booz Allen Hamilton has been included on Military Times' Best for Vets: Employers List, ranking third among 82 companies honored for corporate cultures and policies that cater to veterans. In 2015, the firm was ranked 12th, and in 2016 rose to sixth place for its dedicated veteran outreach program. Companies across the country were invited to take part in the Military Times survey and rankings were determined based on the answers provided, focusing on “recruiting of veterans and service members, company culture, policies, and reservist accommodations.”

In an interview with Military Times, Kurt shared that the training and development that he acquired in the military provided a solid foundation for gaining the necessary leadership skills to advance up the ranks at Booz Allen. He also stated an easy assimilation into the firm’s culture which is very much reminiscent of key attributes and priorities of the military such as “the focus on people, the leadership, the ability to work hard at a task and the privilege of serving something larger than yourself.”

Simply stated, Booz Allen speaks military and continues to support veterans with its workforce programs, community partnerships, and client service.

Sustainable Brands Detroit Shares a New Vision for “The Good Life”

SOURCE:Cone Communications

DESCRIPTION:

This week, the Cone Communications team headed out to Sustainable Brands in Detroit for four days of conversation around "Redefining the Good Life." From inspirational plenaries to tours experiencing the resurgence of Detroit, the week focused on what a new “good life” could mean – a shift from “better, faster, more” to perhaps a new definition focused on authenticity and mindful simplicity.

The conference was replete with bright ideas and concepts, but here are four key insights – some big and some small – that stood out to us:

  • The Shift From “Less Bad” to “More Good”: Sustainability leader William McDonough kicked off SB’17 Detroit with a plenary speech on a concept that was echoed throughout the four-day conference – a shift from thinking of sustainability in terms of doing less harm to viewing it more as what could be done to positively benefit the world. He drove the point home saying, “doing less bad is still doing bad, just less so.” The idea was echoed in a morning session led by Elisabeth Lavill, founder of Utopies, where she explained companies should still work to reduce the “bad” such as GHG emissions and waste, but at the same time increase the more aspirational aspects of business that could drive positive change.
  • Collaboration is a Key to Progress: In a session focused on how big brands can learn from sustainability-minded entrepreneurs, Paul Dillinger, VP of Global Product Innovation at Levi Strauss & Co. shared the success of its LS&Co. Collaboratory fellowship program – a program which provides funding and support to budding entrepreneurs putting the environment at the forefront of their fledgling businesses. Alongside him on the panel was John Moore, Creative Director at Outerknown, one of the brands that has benefited from the program. Moore described the impact having “the keys to the Levi’s kingdom” had on the company’s ability to learn and scale. And in a strong signal of the need for collaboration across industries and organizations, Erin Meezan, Chief Sustainability Officer at Interface closed her plenary speech with a simple message emblazoned on the screen: “Steal these slides.”

Really Celebrate Older Americans Month

By: Joe Cuticelli

SOURCE:Sodexo, Inc.

DESCRIPTION:

70 is the new 40. Age is just a number. You’re only as old as you feel.

Clichés aside, seriously; what’s age got to do with it?

As my colleague David Boyd Williams wrote in a recent blog on ageism – leveraging the wealth of experience that older adults offer is good for our society. And, when senior living communities highlight their residents’ vibrant contributions, they underscore the great things inspired age can bring.

Prepare to be inspired: meet Phyllis Zeno and 40 more Asbury Methodist Village residents, ages 75 to 102 as they sing, dance, and most importantly, have a blast together in their community’s fourth original musical in 5 years.  Mrs. Zeno is the composer and playwright for all four productions. She’s 91.

Surprised? I hope not. Ashton Applewhite certainly gets it. The ageism activist and TED2017 speaker encourages people to embrace both sides of the story when it comes to aging in her book This Chair Rocks: A Manifesto Against Ageism. Yes, she knows that physical decline is real but little else is inevitable, and as she points out, nobody is talking about the very real benefits of aging, which she’s fighting to change.

In an interview with Asbury Communities, she says, “Aging isn’t a problem or a disease: it’s a natural, powerful, lifelong process that unites us all.” There’s no one “right” way to age; you can compose musicals, go fly fishing, work, knit hats for babies, travel the world – or sit on the porch and watch the world go by if you’re so inclined.  The experience is as unique as the person; the pervasive, pernicious influence of media stereotypes contributes to the impression that age is only about decline. Ms. Applewhite says, “I tell people to start by looking at your ideas about aging and thinking about where they come from. Look for ways in which you’re ageist instead of for evidence that you’re not, because we can’t challenge bias unless we’re aware of it.” Inspired? Download “Who Me, Ageist? her free guide to starting a consciousness-raising group; it’s available under Resources on ThisChairRocks.com.

My dad gets it, so I sent him the link to the “Who Me, Ageist?” guide. Like Ms. Applewhite, he knows there’s no marker, no date when someone becomes old and everything goes downhill.  He’s living his life on his terms, enjoying himself, unconcerned with what society thinks he should be doing. He just might take up the fight.

World’s largest leisure travel company recognized by Lloyd’s List for industry-first program to build seven next-generation LNG-powered ships and Carnival Corporation's efforts to reduce air emissions and protect environment recognized with award

SOURCE:Carnival Corporation & plc

DESCRIPTION:

MIAMI, May 30, 2017 /3BL Media/– Carnival Corporation & plc (NYSE/LSE: CCL; NYSE: CUK), the world’s largest leisure travel company, has been named winner of the Lloyd's List Americas 2017 Cleaner Safer Seas Solutions award for its environmental commitment to improve the quality of air emissions through first-in-the-cruise-industry adoption of liquefied natural gas (LNG), the world’s cleanest burning fossil fuel.

In selecting Carnival Corporation for the prestigious Lloyd’s List honor, an independent judging panel of shipping industry leaders applauded the company’s commitment to build seven next-generation cruise ships powered by LNG. Pioneering a new era in the use of the world’s cleanest burning fossil fuel, these new ships for Carnival Corporation's AIDA Cruises, Costa Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line and P&O Cruises (UK) brands will use LNG to generate 100 percent of their power both in port and on the open sea.

“We are honored to be a part of the Lloyd’s List Americas Awards – one of the most respected awards in the shipping and maritime industry – and on behalf of our more than 120,000 employees across the globe, we are thrilled to be recognized for our company’s strong commitment to sustainability and the environment,” said Tom Strang, senior vice president, maritime affairs for Carnival Corporation. “We are proud and passionate about being at the forefront of helping the industry continue to identify and adopt solutions like LNG and exhaust gas cleaning technology that reduce emissions and improve our overall environmental performance.”

The Hutchinson Ports Cleaner Safer Seas Solutions award was presented to Carnival Corporation during a ceremony in New York on May 25 honoring high achievers across the international shipping and maritime industry. The award recognizes the ship operator in North, South or Central America that is making the most meaningful and positive difference in the areas of safety and environmental performance. To be eligible for the award, entrants were required to “demonstrate a comprehensive effort across operations that show respect for the sanctity of human life and meaningful support for cleaner oceans and environment."

“We extend our congratulations to Carnival Corporation and all our other Lloyd’s List Americas 2017 winners who are demonstrating strong environmental leadership in the maritime industry,” said Helen Kelly, executive editor of Lloyd’s List. “Our awards support the best in the shipping business who have proven excellence, innovation and professionalism over the past 12 months. Their commitment serves as a reminder of the importance of the shipping industry for benefitting jobs, commerce and the economy while also recognizing their role in being strong stewards of the environment and social good.”

A Commitment to Sustainability
In 2015, Carnival Corporation announced its 2020 sustainability goals that underscore its commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility, with specific goals relating to the company’s environmental performance and improving the quality of its air emissions. Carnival Corporation continuously evaluates established and emerging technological solutions – such as LNG -- to help meet their goals. With less carbon and cleaner emissions, LNG emits zero sulfur dioxides and, when compared to marine diesel oil, it has a 95 to 100 percent reduction in particulate matter, an 85 percent reduction in nitrogen oxides and a 25 percent reduction in carbon emissions.

In total, Carnival Corporation has agreements in place to build seven LNG-powered cruise ships across four of its 10 global cruise brands in coming years. Its pioneering efforts involving LNG began by testing the use of LNG with the AIDAsol in Hamburg, Germany, in 2015. The AIDAsol was the first cruise ship in the world supplied with power via an LNG Hybrid barge, in a unique pilot project with Becker Marine Systems.

In May 2016, the new AIDAprima began bunkering LNG via truck in Germany and now regularly uses dual-fuel engines for an energy supply with LNG while in ports on the ship's Northern European deployment. Its sister ship, AIDAperla, debuted in April with the same technology.

In 2018 and 2019, AIDA Cruises and Costa Cruises will debut the cruise industry's first next-generation ships powered by LNG on the open seas. LNG-powered ships for Carnival Cruise Line and P&O Cruises (UK) will follow in 2020. Costa Cruises and AIDA Cruises will each receive an additional LNG-powered ship in 2021, followed by an additional LNG-powered ship for Carnival Cruise Line in 2022.

Earlier this month, Carnival Corporation was named one of the top 100 Best Corporate Citizens for 2017 by Corporate Responsibility Magazine. Carnival Corporation ranked number 23 in CRM's 18th annual survey, a significant improvement from last year's ranking at number 51. The company achieved the highest rank in corporate responsibility among firms in the travel and tourism sector and was the only cruise-specific company to make the list, which uses as its base the Russell 1000 Index of the 1,000 largest U.S. public companies. This marked Carnival Corporation's fifth time in the past seven years to be recognized with the 100 Best Corporate Citizens distinction.

Bowl Me Over! Arrow Electronics Employees Raise $15K to Support Junior Achievement Business Week

DESCRIPTION:

They came, they saw, they went bowling. And they also raised $15,000 in scholarship money.

Earlier this month, 150 Arrow Electronics employees gathered at Bowlero in Centennial, Colo. to participate in the 2017 Junior Achievement Bowl-a-thon, raising enough scholarship funds to send 43 high school students to this summer’s Arrow-sponsored Junior Achievement Business Week camp.

Arrow is again the Presenting Sponsor of the week-long camp, which takes place June 11 through 16 on the Johnson & Wales University campus in central Denver. Junior Achievement Business Week is a truly transformative learning experience; one Arrow applauds because of its focus on teaching innovation. Participating Colorado high school students in grades 9–12 work in teams and are mentored by local business leaders as they form mock companies, pitch creative ideas, and apply leadership skills, all in a competitive environment. They also stay in campus dorms to experience college living first-hand.

This year, many of the attending students will act as “consultants” to Arrow as they work on a real project for the global technology company. In addition to engaging in interactive workshops on marketing, business ethics and budgeting, the student’s busy week will culminate in a “Shark Tank”-style competition.

“Arrow is fully committed to the communities where we live, work and play, and we are proud to once again partner with Junior Achievement Rocky Mountain in support of the annual Business Week camp,” said Kristin Russell, global president of Arrow Intelligent Systems and a Junior Achievement Rocky Mountain board member. “We are honored to help nurture the spirit of entrepreneurship, innovation and learned business skills this program delivers.”

Five of Nevada’s most prominent employers are urging the Nevada Senate to pass Assembly Bill 206 for a strong clean energy standard for the state. The letter from the five companies – Dignity Health, eBay, Levi Strauss & Co., Switch and Unilever– urges support for the standard, which would increase the percentage Nevadans get from clean renewable energy from 20 percent, where it is now, to 50 percent by 2030.

The stronger Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) would “help ensure all customers are able to take advantage of the benefits of having more renewable energy on the grid,” the letter says. “Strengthening the state’s clean energy standard will also provide businesses with the certainty and predictability we need to make long-term investments in Nevada. Clean energy investments can help businesses cut energy costs, avoid the volatility of fossil fuel prices, and stay competitive.”

The five companies signing the letter join a growing chorus of companies large and small urging the Nevada Legislature and Gov. Brian Sandoval to enact the clean energy standard into law. Other companies publicly supporting AB 206 include MGM Resorts International, which is Nevada’s largest employer; Barrick Gold Corporation, an international mining company with more than 3,000 Nevada employees; and Zappos.com the Las Vegas-based retail company.

“Nevada lawmakers should respond to the calls of the business community and increase the state’s renewable portfolio standard,” said Alli Gold Roberts, senior manager of state policy at Ceres, a sustainability nonprofit organization working with investors and companies to build leadership and drive clean energy solutions throughout the economy. “A stronger standard will provide companies with additional policy certainty and help the state compete in today’s global economy. "

Advocates for Nevada’s clean energy economy applauded the wide support from businesses throughout the state.

A recent analysis by the Natural Resources Defense Council estimated that the strengthened clean energy standard would attract more than $3 billion in capital investments to Nevada. The state’s standard, which was one of the first in the nation when established in 1997, has helped attract some $6 billion in investment and build a job base of more than 20,000 workers in energy efficiency and solar energy alone.

Ceres is a sustainability nonprofit organization working with the most influential investors and companies to build leadership and drive solutions throughout the economy.

To the Stars and Back: Booz Allen’s Angela Wallace on Her Career in Space

DESCRIPTION:

To safely predict the coordinates of adversaries on the battlefield or touch base with family members back at home, deployed soldiers rely heavily on connectivity. Meet the problem solver at Booz Allen Hamilton, who for over two decades, has been developing next-generation satellite communications architectures to support and protect over 130,000+ deployed soldiers, sailors, and airmen. Meet Angela Wallace.

Inspired by a seamstress grandmother, Booz Allen Vice President Angela Wallace took that inspiration to the stars and back. A leader in the 103-year old consulting firm’s growing Engineering and Science Business, Angela supports many defense clients with systems engineering, acquisition and satellite communications. She earned a Master’s degree in electrical engineering, and provided technical support to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s (DARPA) Advanced Space Technology Program before coming to Booz Allen. We spoke with Angela about what it’s like to be a leader in a field in which women are traditionally under-represented, and asked what advice she has for young women.

Who are some of your role models?

Role models are important.  They shift the equation from “Is there a way?” to “Here is a way.”  My grandmother was my earliest role model. Back in the 60’s, while raising her five children, she set a strong example as a working Mom.  She was a seamstress and did some clothing design work, and showed me that women could be successful in business while also raising strong families. While I wasn’t interested in sewing, my grandmother modeled for me the kind of balance I try to achieve between my career and my family.

What was your dream job as a kid? How does that align to what you do now?

I remember when I was ten that I was very interested in being a doctor, a wife and mom and super-wealthy by the time I was 21—quite ambitious!

I began college on a pre-med track but found that environment wasn’t satisfying to me. I had strong science and math skills, but I was interested in doing more collaborative work, and solving problems. Those interests led me to study electrical engineering. I was one of only a handful of women in the Electrical Engineering Department at my university—and I was certainly aware of the spotlight on me because of that, and the necessity that I set a high standard.

When I graduated in the early 1990s, I was offered two different positions at the Department of Defense.  I chose to work on space communications systems, and have always felt very good about that choice. In fact, communications has been a thread that’s run through my career, whether I was working on cyber, space systems engineering, or supporting DARPA.

Beyond architecting space communications systems, everyday communications are also important to me.  Our colleagues in real estate often use the phrase “Location, location, location.”  For a team of engineers and scientists the key phrase should be “Communication, communication, communication.”

When I first started working—and for quite a while—I thought that all you had to do to solve a problem was to think of and share a clever idea. But there is a lot more to it than that.  You must master the power and art of the conversation.  As an engineer, I can be overly focused on products or results.  However, the conversation is often where the key decisions are made.

What about your work makes you proud?

I’m very proud of what we do to help the mission of deployed warfighters. At any one time, there are 130,000 American servicemen and women deployed around the world. Many of them are overseas, and tasked with completing a challenging mission. They may not have access to fiber, wi-fi, or cellphones. So, satellites are critical for communications, and of course, communication is critical. The work we do boils down to saving lives: both warfighters and the people they protect. Ensuring reliable satellite communication also means that men and women can talk to the spouses, parents, and children they’ve left behind during their deployment. So, our work can provide that family connection that’s so important to our deployed soldiers.

What inspires you?

My children inspire me—and so many young people inspire me. It’s amazing what young people today can do with the computing power that they have access to, and I’m so interested to see what evolves over the next 20 years as we learn more about what humankind can accomplish.

What advice do you have for women embarking on careers in STEM?
Sometimes I think that the defense industry can intimidate young women. I want young women to know that there are very good opportunities in defense—and wonderful people to work with.

Early in my career in the Defense Department, I found that I was often the only woman on technical teams. Sometimes that felt unusual, but I found that my colleagues and managers were respectful and interested in my perspective. I also found that I got more name recognition than some of the men received. Again, I was very aware of the pressure to shine—because as a woman in a male field, I represented more than just myself.

Booz Allen is a top employer of engineers who represent diverse backgrounds, ways of thinking, and areas of expertise. Many our engineers are women, and we are a long-standing supporter of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE).

It has been a bit difficult to keep up with the news since January. Every few hours it seems like there is a new revelation in the global political wreckage that is the Trump administration. Whether you’re more interested in how ties to Putin will lead to impeachment, how Donald Trump is systematically alienating the US’s closest allies, or the possibility of the US pulling out of the landmark Paris Climate Agreement, it’s hard to deny that the international political scene is roiling. And with every international political churn, there are environmental causes and implications. This week on Sea Change Radio we speak with energy consultant, Alex Gilbert, who provides a clear recap of the past 10 years in US international relations. He connects the dots and shows how political alliances among nations, policies like fracking, and environmental conditions like drought have helped to create turmoil in countries like Syria, Turkey, Russia, and even the good old US of A.

Insights from The Albertsons Companies Foundation and Versaic

SOURCE:Versaic

DESCRIPTION:

This Thursday Christy Duncan Anderson, Executive Director, The Albertsons Companies Foundation, and Andy Cummings, Director, Client Solutions at Versaic, will be participating in a webcast hosted by ACCP.  The topic -- Crafting a Charitable Giving Strategy – is one that interests (and challenges) many of the organizations we work with.

For most corporate philanthropy executives, crafting a true charitable giving strategy is easier said than done. Versaic has worked with Christy for about seven years now and we know she can attest to that. Challenges in developing a giving strategy range from establishing a charitable giving focus, to getting executive buy-in, navigating mergers & acquisitions, and achieving impact.

Participants can look forward to a lively discussion as Christy walks us through the journey she’s been on, from her early days managing charitable giving at Safeway to her current role overseeing the Foundation as well as philanthropic programs managed by the 13 divisions of Albertsons Companies throughout the country. Christy has done a remarkable job putting an impact-focused approach in place and she works closely with divisions of the company to grow, track and communicate their impact to the neighborhoods where their employees work and live.

She’ll share her top tips for putting a strategy in place and field questions from listeners. Interested ACCP members can sign up via this link. We’ll plan to share highlights from the conversation in an upcoming blog post.

How One Promise Is Worth $15 Million

SUMMARY:

Inspired by PNC’s signature philanthropic program, Grow Up Great, Cincinnati employee Cheryl Rose helped to create a city-wide effort called the Preschool Promise. The approach will help children become kindergarten ready and is being studied nationally as a new collaborative model for early childhood education.

DESCRIPTION:

As a young, single mom earning poverty wages, Cheryl Rose understood how difficult it was to afford quality childcare. At the time, access through a state-funded program was a life saver for her and her son.

“It gave him a great start in school and in life. I viewed that as a game changer for us because it allowed me to develop a successful career, including senior leadership roles,” said Rose.

Not only was I inspired to do something more, but when I share my story, other young mothers are inspired that they can do it too.

And then she used that experience to help provide a similar opportunity for other families. Rose, along with a Cincinnati-based steering committee, developed the Cincinnati Preschool Promise, a program which helps to address the issue of children being unprepared for kindergarten. Currently, more than 40 percent of the city’s children, especially those in low-income areas, begin kindergarten unprepared.

Located in the Cincinnati Public School system, the Preschool Promise will guarantee an increased number of children to have access to two years of high-quality preschool. It will provide additional funds - $75 million over five years - from available state and federal funds to allow preschools, including Head Starts, to expand and educate more children.

The initiative is now being studied throughout the country as a new collaborative model for early childhood education.

“Working on this project was a natural fit for me. It’s a passion that’s very near and dear to my heart,” said Rose, a CFA and Hawthorn employee since July 2011. “When I joined PNC, one of the best decisions I made was becoming involved in Grow Up Great. It fostered my passion for early childhood education.”

First-Hand Inspiration

Rose knew early childhood education was her passion long before she started her career.

“I had a bumpy start when I was a young adult. I dropped out of college, had a child on my own and worked as a waitress earning low wages.”

At first she struggled to find quality child care for her son, but was able to enroll him in a Head Start classroom through a voucher program.

Although her son benefitted from a Head Start education, Rose didn’t understand just how big of an impact it made.

I didn’t understand the power of early childhood education until I attended an event. They showed us a brain scan and explained everything that happens before age 6, and that made a huge impression on me.

Preschool Promise is Born

Rose joined the United Way in 2007 and eventually joined the Success by 6 Executive Steering Committee, a United Way group that focuses on advocating for early childhood education.

In 2013, Rose and a small group from the Cincinnati Chamber’s leadership program created a grassroots community project that gained momentum that no other project had before. It eventually was titled The Preschool Promise.

Despite the abundance of community support, funding was a barrier; however, under Rose and her co-chair’s leadership, the community and constituents, including businesses, nonprofits, labor unions, faith-based organizations and school districts, came together with the solution of a tax increase.

A community vote resulted in $15 million annually in new funding for preschools over the next five years.

“We are currently building the program and will launch in August in conjunction with the new school year,” said Rose. “There is a lot of work to do, but we built an incredible and diverse board of leaders including a university president and a retired Fortune 500 CEO.”

Award for Impact

For their work and passage of the program over the past three years, Rose and her Cincinnati Preschool Promise co-chair are receiving one of the city’s most prestigious United Way awards.

The Impact Leadership Award recognizes the contributions of individuals or groups who have made meaningful strides in advancing United Way’s agenda for community impact.

“We want to increase access to quality preschool for children in the community through the Preschool Promise,” said Rose. “In this instance, we impacted the community by setting a goal of helping 80 percent of children be prepared for Kindergarten by 2020.”

Winners were presented with the award at the Leaders and Legends Luncheon on Wednesday April 19, 2017 at Duke Energy Convention Center in Cincinnati.

“I want nothing less than for everyone in our community – especially our most at-risk kids – to get a fair start in life, and this program is key,” said Rose. “The solution is so simple. The investment so small.”
