Addressing Barriers for Women Leaders: Mentoring

$

By: Jennifer Williamson

SOURCE:Sodexo, Inc.

DESCRIPTION:

In 1972 Katharine Graham became America’s first female Fortune 500 CEO, leading The Washington Post Company, the fifth largest publishing company at the time, and under her leadership profits grew 20 percent annually from 1975 to 1985.   She also became a role model and mentor for many women leaders in male-dominated fields and spoke openly about the issues they faced.

Last year the US hit a milestone with a record 27 female CEOs at the helm of S&P 500 companies. And while there has been progress since 1972, it has not been enough, especially when women are projected to account for 51 percent of the increase in total labor force growth between 2008 and 2018.

As it’s been said, “you can’t BE what you can’t SEE.”   In fact, a study from The Rockefeller Foundation found that women and Americans overall feel there is a critical need for female role models and mentors. Two-thirds of Americans said that it’s highly important to them that younger women starting their careers have more women in leadership positions as role models. This desire is especially intense among millennial women (82 percent of women younger than 35), compared with 74 percent among women 35-54 years old, and even lower (67 percent) among women 55 or older.

In the same study, most women cited having women as a mentor, suggesting the need for, and potential influence of, more women in top positions. Specifically, among women who had mentors in the workplace, nearly two-thirds said that their mentor was another woman, rising to 72% among millennial women who have had mentors, while just 37 percent had male mentors.

Companies that effectively implement mentoring programs, in particular women-to-women mentoring, know that there are benefits for all parties involved:

For mentees, benefits include:

  • Learning first-hand from someone that has already traveled the path
  • Having access to a broader organizational network
  • Having a “safe zone” to talk about challenges that are unique to women and obstacles to advancement

For mentors, benefits include:

  • Nurturing future women leaders for the organization
  • Gaining fresh perspectives, ideas and approaches
  • Developing personal leadership and coaching styles

For companies, benefits include:

  • Reinforcing that women have a place and path to success within the organization
  • Developing existing female talent at all levels
  • Improving staff morale, performance and motivation

As corporate America looks to develop even more female leaders, what are some of the benefits you have seeing come from mentoring? Share your comments on Sodexo Insights.

DESCRIPTION:

It’s a critical time for the arts and healthcare across the USA. In solidarity with Americans for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, and dozens of arts organizations, the AATA was a proud National Partner for the 30th annual Arts Advocacy Day, March 20 and 21, 2017, in Washington, DC. Executive Director Cynthia Woodruff and I represented the AATA at the event’s National Arts Action Summit. Hosted by Americans for the Arts (AftA) in partnership with over 85 arts-related cultural and civic groups, we joined together with a record 700 enthusiastic participants – and we were noticed! The New York Times and the Washington Post reported on this most well-attended Arts Advocacy Day to date.

AATA has been represented at previous Arts Advocacy Days, and our support of this year’s event was all the more significant given the planned budget cuts impacting the National Endowments for the Arts (NEA) and the Humanities (NEH).During the months prior, AATA volunteers and staff were part of AftA’s Legislative Planning Team, tasked with preparing materials for this important annual event.

Take an Exclusive Look Behind-the-scenes of Fx’s ‘Legion’ and Learn How Fox Goes Green on Set

SOURCE:21st Century Fox

DESCRIPTION:

FX’s Legion drew praise from critics and audiences alike for its ambitious storytelling and visual style, and fans can now check out an exclusive video and case study detailing how the cast and crew brought that same level of ambition to going green behind-the-scenes. All departments made a concerted effort to save energy, reduce the show’s carbon footprint, and overall make the production as environmentally sustainable as possible, even piloting new technologies that could advance sustainability for the entire industry. The initiatives came as part of 21st Century Fox’s broad commitment to minimizing its environmental impacts, growing sustainably, and inspiring others to take action.

“This is the first production I’ve worked on where the conversation [about sustainability] started during our first production meeting,” said Kim Goddard-Rains, Production Coordinator. “I hope that it inspires people when they see the results and that they’re reminded of the little things we can all do. It feels good.”

Before shooting began, 21CF once again hired Zena Harris of Green Sparks Group, who previously oversaw green initiatives on The X-Files event series in 2016, as Legion’s sustainable production consultant. Harris worked directly with each department throughout the nearly six-month shoot to review best practices from the Green Production Guide, which Fox developed in collaboration with peer Hollywood studios, as well as identify opportunities to innovate new techniques for energy saving, such as partnering with Portable Electric to pilot their new mobile power stations.

“The studio was very supportive as we trialed battery power stations to replace the smaller generators that are diesel powered,” Harris said. “It reduces greenhouse gas emissions from generators and helps eliminate noise.”

These strategies, combined with every department’s goals to save energy and reduce waste, resulted in significant cost and energy savings across the board. The crew managed to divert 55% of the waste from landfill, avoid 252 metric tons of CO2 emissions, and collectively save nearly $47,500 USD, as well as purchase 70% Forest Stewardship Council-certified lauan plywood for set construction.

These achievements build on a long history of pioneering green production practices at 21CF. The company regularly works with production crews across its film and television projects to ensure environmental responsibility is integrated into each department’s daily operations, with previous series 24: Live Another Day and The X-Files event series each breaking new ground for the industry at large on lumber sourcing and recycling.

Milestone 250th and 251st American Coal Plants Announce Retirement

DESCRIPTION:

Originally posted on sierraclub.org

Today marked the 250th U.S. coal plant that has retired or committed to retire since the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal Campaign began in 2010, driving coal use down to its lowest level in history. The retirement of Ohio’s Killen and Stuart plants by June 2018 comes after months of conversations between Dayton Power & Light and stakeholders. DPL and other co-owners decided to announce the retirement because the plants are not economically viable. These plants are the 250th and 251st plants retired nationwide, respectively, since the Beyond Coal Campaign began.

“Despite claims to the contrary, King Coal is not coming back” said Michael Bloomberg. “Four coal-fired power plants have been slated for retirement since November, reflecting strong demand for clean energy over polluting coal. The Americans who power the Beyond Coal campaign won a big victory today and will continue to fight to close half the U.S. coal plants, clean our air and meet our global climate commitments.”

Bloomberg’s foundation has provided $80 million to the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal Campaign.

Whirlpool group raises money for charities, in its own way

SOURCE:Whirlpool Corporation

DESCRIPTION:

BENTON HARBOR — Jasper Huff smiled when he was brought into a room where everyone was wearing Mickey Mouse ears.

The 3-year-old and his family were taken to the upstairs cafeteria at Whirlpool Corp.’s Riverview Campus on Thursday, where he was treated to a send-off party courtesy of the home appliance maker and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The cafeteria was transformed into a “glimpse of Disney” for a reason. Jasper had brain cancer and was 10 months into remission. He and his family were heading to Disney World where Jasper would meet Mickey Mouse.

However, the reason Jasper’s send-off party was at Whirlpool’s Riverview Campus was because of an employee group that had raised money to fund the boy’s wish.

The group is known as WhEAT, or the Whirlpool Employee Activities Team.

2016 NAFC grantees had meaningful impact on health outcomes in communities across the country

SOURCE:CVS Health

DESCRIPTION:

WOONSOCKET, R.I., April 3, 2017 /3BL Media/ – The CVS Health Foundation today announced more than $1 million in grants to 33 Free and Charitable Clinics as part of a multi-year grant program with the National Association of Free & Charitable Clinics (NAFC). Over the past four years, the Foundation has donated nearly $5 million to NAFC to increase access to quality care and support the management of chronic disease.

“As a pharmacy innovation company, we are committed to helping people on their path to better health in the communities where we live and work," said Eileen Howard Boone, president of the CVS Health Foundation. "Our support for the National Association of Free & Charitable Clinics has yielded significant results over the past four years that demonstrate how increased access to quality care and innovative approaches to chronic disease management can affect the lives of the most vulnerable Americans.”

New results released today by the CVS Health Foundation demonstrate how the support of previous grant recipients is making a meaningful impact on their goals of improving care coordination, managing chronic conditions and increasing access to care. Critical results from the past year include:

  • SLO Noor Foundation (San Luis Obispo, CA) offered one extra day of services per week, providing care to an additional 241 patients that would otherwise not have been able to receive such necessary care in 2016.
  • Through their smoking cessation classes, 70% of participants at the Miami Rescue Mission (Miami, FL) reported either quitting or significantly cutting back the use of tobacco.
  • Good News Clinics (Gainesville, GA) recruited 22 additional physicians to expand availability of services for Health Access patients – surpassing their goal of 10 and thereby lessening the wait time for patients requiring specialty care.

“The NAFC is extremely grateful for the support our members receive from the CVS Health Foundation and their recognition of the life saving work Free and Charitable Clinics provide to the medically underserved throughout this country,” said Nicole Lamoureux, NAFC CEO.  “Their unwavering commitment and investment over the years has allowed our Free and Charitable Clinics to expand health care access, coordinate health care efforts and build healthier communities.”

As the need for access to affordable care and improved health outcomes continue to weigh on the U.S. health care system, the CVS Health Foundation will be providing grants, ranging from $20,000 to $35,000, this year to the following NAFC recipients in support of chronic disease management and prevention for diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and asthma, improved care coordination and increased access to care programs:

DESCRIPTION:

Last week, global outdoor lifestyle brand Timberland shared insights, best practices, and lessons learned at Ethical Corporation’s 5th Responsible Business Summit in New York. The annual industry-leading summit brings together over 400 senior business leaders to discuss how brands are ‘Delivering Purpose’ for people, the environment and commercial success.

Margaret Morey-Reuner, Timberland’s director of strategic partnerships and business development, joined Ian Rosenberger, founder and CEO of Thread International, for the “Partnership X Factor:  Partnerships that Accelerate Change” session. The session highlighted the characteristics of winning partnerships and their role in driving business and creating social impact through sustainable innovations. Morey-Reuner and Rosenberger spoke about the recently launched Timberland X Thread collection made from Thread’s Ground to GoodTM fabric transformed from plastic bottles littering the streets and landfills of Haiti. Going beyond recycling and sustainability, the collection creates social value and impact in the form of cleaner neighborhoods and dignified new job opportunities.

At the end of the session the audience voted on whether or not the Timberland X Thread partnership had the “X-factor,” the stand-out potential to accelerate business growth and create positive change, and a clear majority of the audience agreed that it did. “We’re happy to see that the Timberland X Thread partnership resonated with the Ethical Corporation audience,” said Morey-Reuner.  “The partnership has allowed Timberland to build off our longstanding commitment to create responsible products, protect the outdoors and serve the communities where we live and work. As we make more products with Thread’s Ground to GoodTM fabric, we’re excited to see the social impact we can create through our continued collaboration.”

Atlanta McIlwraith, senior manager of employee engagement, joined representatives from Google, HSBC, Zendesk, and Hyatt Hotels on a panel titled “Engage Employees with the Right Sell and Measure the Impact of Change.” Panelists represented diverse industries and their companies ranged in age from 152 years to less than 10. Each panelist presented their respective employee engagement programs and discussed ways to make innovation a priority in engagement strategies.

“Service is a way of life at Timberland, but through our many years of employee volunteerism, we’ve learned the importance of innovation and infusing new ideas to keep employees motivated to serve,” said McIlwraith. “Joining the Ethical Corporation panel not only allowed me to share our employee engagement successes, like our Path of ServiceTM employee volunteer program celebrating its 25th anniversary later this year, but also provided the opportunity to learn new strategies and tactics from other companies who are at different points on their journey.”

CHARLOTTE, N.C., April 3, 2017 /3BL Media/ – Piedmont Natural Gas, a subsidiary of Duke Energy, announced it has been recognized for its support of employees who are military veterans or serve in the National Guard and Reserve.

Piedmont was among several North Carolina employers honored with the prestigious “Above and Beyond Award” Saturday, March 25, at the annual Employer Recognition Banquet hosted by the North Carolina Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve.

The organization is a Department of Defense agency whose mission is to gain and maintain employer support for Guard and Reserve service members by recognizing employers who provide job security for employees while they are on active duty. The agency also works to promote and encourage the hiring of Guard and Reserve members and veterans.

“We are very grateful for all Americans who serve and we are proud to support our Piedmont associates in fulfilling their military service obligations,” said Keith Napier, director of natural gas operations – East, for Piedmont Natural Gas. “We understand that our support and advocacy of employee participation in the military is critical to maintaining the strength and readiness of the nation’s Guard and Reserve units.”

Piedmont was nominated for the award by Greg Brown, an operations manager who joined the company in 1990 and has served in the North Carolina Air National Guard since 1993. In addition to annual training exercises, Brown has taken time away from his job for three deployments, most recently to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, where he oversaw several construction projects.

“Piedmont Natural Gas is one of the most supportive employers with leading-edge policies regarding military leave,” said Brown. “I feel fortunate to work for a company that makes it easy for me and my family to balance my work obligations and duty to my country.”

GM Watching Policies that Pave the Way for Safe Self-Driving Vehicle Testing

SOURCE:General Motors

DESCRIPTION:

DETROIT, April 3, 2017 /3BL Media/ -- The National Safety Council estimates that as many as 40,000 people died in motor vehicle crashes in 2016 -- a 6% increase over 2015 and the highest number of fatalities in almost a decade. Previous data has shown that more than 90% of highway fatalities are the result of human error. Self-driving technology is more than just a business priority for General Motors, it is an opportunity to save thousands of lives.

In June of last year, GM began testing self-driving Chevrolet Bolt EVs on public roads in Scottsdale, Arizona, and the very challenging urban center of San Francisco. In December, after the enactment of legislation in Michigan, we announced that we would begin testing in Metro Detroit.

Eventually, when GM has gathered enough safety data from these test vehicles that provides statistically significant data to prove that our self-driving vehicles are ready to operate without a human driver, we plan to deploy self-driving vehicles within carefully defined parameters and boundaries through controlled ride-sharing projects.

Michigan’s law would allow GM to develop and deploy self-driving vehicles in the state, and can serve as a template for other states in 2017 legislative sessions. More than 20 states are already considering almost 50 bills regarding self-driving vehicles.

GM, is a strong advocate for state and federal policy that would pave the way for self-driving vehicle testing and deployment that puts safety as the very forefront of any language considered. Our priority is, and always will be, the safety of our passengers and fellow road users.

We are going to need your help during this process to ask the legislature to pass language that strikes the balance between fostering innovation and protecting public safety. Elected officials will steer this process, and their positions are greatly impacted by their constituents’ voices.

We want them to hear from GM’s most loyal advocates, the company’s stakeholders, who understand why safety must be our first priority. If you are interested in knowing the latest on this topic as it happens, sign up for updates here

Aim for Profits Despite Rollback of Clean Power Plan - The Minute

$
0
0

SOURCE:3BL Media, LLC

DESCRIPTION:

Clean energy companies are counting on profits, despite the Trump Administration’s recent executive order to cancel the EPA’s Clean Power Plan. The principal reason is economics. Prices in the wind and solar industries have fallen so much that renewables now compete with fossil fuels.

Wind and solar farms have become cheaper to build, making them good investments in place of aging, costly, fossil-fuel plants. Demand from the private sector is strong. Dozens of large companies including Bank of America, General Motors, and Alphabet’s Google are planning to power their operations entirely with wind and solar power.

And state laws requiring utilities to source some of their electricity from renewables, along with federal tax credits extended with support from Republican lawmakers, are driving companies such as NextEra Energy, Duke Energy, and NRG Energy to expand their portfolios, reports Bloomberg. The strategy for this private sector “clean power plan” is aimed directly at the bottom line—and profits. I’m John Howell for 3BL Media.

Simple Ideas to Create Cleaner, Greener & More Beautiful Places to Live

SOURCE:Keep America Beautiful

DESCRIPTION:

Since the 1970s, Keep America Beautiful Month in April has celebrated the work led by our 620 state and community-based affiliates, local partners, businesses, public officials and millions of passionate volunteers to advance our fight to End Littering, Improve Recycling and Beautify America’s Communities.

Here are 10 easy ways anyone can #DoBeautifulThings and help Keep America Beautiful fulfill a vision of a country in which every community is a clean, green and beautiful place to live:

  1. Participate in the Great American Cleanup, the nation's largest community improvement program, which kicks into high gear every spring in more than 20,000 communities across the country and continues through the fall. Find a local Keep America Beautiful Affiliate using the Affiliate Search Map at kab.org.
  2. Organize an event on your own block ... and celebrate your accomplishments! We call it a #cleanYOURblock Party! Visit act.kab.org/cleanyourblock to create your own #cleanYOURblock team and invite family, friends and neighbors to join you.
  3. Set up an individual "#cleanYOURblock Party"fundraising page or join someone else's team today!
  4. Download the #cleanYOURblock Party Volunteer Guide!
  5. Follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to be inspired by photos and stories of community improvement projects taking place across the country … led by people just like you!
  6. Share photos of you, friends and family participating in a local Great American Cleanup event, a #cleanYOURblock Party you’ve organized or any other activity that shows how you are helping to Keep America Beautiful. Be sure to use #DoBeautifulThings or #cleanYOURblock so we can see them and share them!
  7. Explore National Planting Day, a fall initiative of the Great American Cleanup. National Planting Day is designed to mobilize Americans to support local ecosystems by planting native species of plants and trees, grow pollinator gardens to promote the health of honeybees, butterflies and other pollinators, and create community-supported sustainable vegetable and fruit gardens.
  8. Check out the many ways Keep America Beautiful is working to Improve Recycling in America. By educating and engaging individuals to recycle more of the right things the right way — at home, at work and on-the-go — we can help make recycling more economically viable, creating jobs and providing recyclables to manufacture new products and packaging, while continuing to reap greater environmental and community benefits.
  9. Learn about the Cigarette Litter Prevention Program and see how we’ve helped reduce cigarette litter, the #1 form of litter, by an average of more than 50% in the 1,700 communities in which the program has been implemented.
  10. Donate to Keep America Beautiful to help us continue to make a lasting environmental, economic and social impact on communities nationwide.

National sponsors of the 2017 Great American Cleanup include Altria, Dow, The Glad Products Company, Lowe's, Niagara Bottling and ReadyRefresh by Nestlé. In select Keep America Beautiful affiliate communities, Marco’s Pizza, the fastest-growing pizza company in the U.S. (based on number of stores signed into development since 2007), will provide free pizza parties for volunteers and participants after Great American Cleanup events.

Dropps, the eco-friendly unit dose household cleaning brand and a Great American Cleanup promotional partner, will donate 10 percent of sales for the entire year to Keep America Beautiful on every new wash plan subscription or new customer product purchase made on Dropps.com using code KAB2017.

Hidden Figures continues to inspire audiences across the country, with over $220 million in box office receipts and a Home Entertainment DVD release on April 11, 2017.

“We at 21CF were inspired by the grassroots movement to bring this film to audiences that wouldn’t otherwise be able to see it—audiences that might include future innovators and barrier-breakers—and we wanted to support and extend that movement,” said Liba Rubenstein, 21CF’s Senior Vice President of Social Impact.

Booz Allen Women Share First-Hand Experiences with FIRST®

SOURCE:Booz Allen Hamilton

DESCRIPTION:

Whether its improving heart health or the automation of cars, Artificial Intelligence is changing the way we exist in today’s connected world. In our technology-driven world, it’s never been more important to build the pipeline of talent in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields, and to encourage the next generation of innovators. Since 1989, FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) has been nurturing kids’ love of STEM, and inspiring them to take on engineering challenges.

Booz Allen Lead Associate Laura Hayman manages Booz Allen’s partnership with FIRST, and she helps employees passionate about helping kids and supporting STEM education get involved in FIRST as volunteers and in some cases, consultants. “I have the job I dreamed about when I was a teenager, working at the intersection of the corporate and social sectors. Every day, I help smart, interesting, and generous colleagues get involved in FIRST, so that FIRST and Booz Allen can together affect more kids and communities. I’m proof that you don’t have to be a scientist or an engineer now to be part of inspiring future ones.”

In honor of Women’s History Month in March, we talked with two more Booz Allen women involved in FIRST to find out what inspired them to get involved.

Lead Associate Amy Dalmas, an instructional designer at the firm, describes this as her “rookie year” as a FIRST mentor. It was Amy’s 8 year-old daughter Mia’s love of all things scientific that spurred Amy’s decision to become a FIRST LEGO® League Junior (FLL) mentor. Mia “can spend whole days building stuff” and she put her ingenuity to use this season with FLL Jr.’s “Creature Craze” challenge which resulted in a group of elementary school kids researching the horses of Assateague Island in MD and building a LEGO model of their habitat.

“I spent three years of my undergraduate program taking engineering classes, eventually graduating with a degree in mathematics and computer science. I enjoyed teaching the kids some fundamentals of engineering so that they could build a motorized lighthouse for their model,” Amy said. “Back when I was a freshman at Penn State Wilkes-Barre, I was one of just three women in my Engineering 101 class. By the end of the semester I was the only woman left. Throughout my time as an undergraduate, I was often one of the few women in my engineering, computer science, and math classes. While I always found my professors to be very encouraging, the absence of other women could be a deterrent for others. I want my daughter to know that there are plenty of opportunities for her in the STEM fields—and her experience with FIRST certainly helped encourage her interest.”

Meanwhile Senior Associate Tina Mangles has been volunteering with FIRST for 9 years, beginning when her son was in first grade and continuing through high school. Tina still serves as a mentor for the TitanBots First Robotics team 2543 in Chula Vista, CA, even though her son is now studying civil engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. “Many FIRST mentors start as parents who volunteer on their kids’ teams, and then stick around after their kids graduate. That’s how rewarding working with these kids can be,” Tina said.

“I help the kids learn presentation skills, project management, conflict resolution, and how to get buy-in from teammates for their ideas,” said Mangles. “The team recently wrote a successful grant application that secured them $5,000 to purchase a trailer with which to transport their designs. “The kids are the owners of their own processes. They run it past the adult mentors, but they are in charge,” she said.

FIRST participants—the kids and the adults—discover their new interests and skills through FIRST challenges, and become more confident and capable leaders. With support from colleagues like Laura, Tina, and Amy, Booz Allen women are helping thousands of kids envision their very own dream jobs.

When asked where she finds personal inspiration in FIRST, Laura refers to the sense of community. “FIRST offers all kids, and actually all adults, an opportunity to learn and contribute, to be valued for their strengths, and to be part of a team. I’m inspired by the kids who struggled socially or academically until they joined a FIRST team. I’m inspired by the community we have here at Booz Allen, where employees who do different types of work and live in different states, connect around FIRST and are part of something bigger.”

Confessions of a Data Cynic

by Jeffrey Whitford, Head of Global Corporate Responsibility for MilliporeSigma

SOURCE:MilliporeSigma

DESCRIPTION:

I didn’t want to believe; in fact, I’ve spent years fighting it. People go on and on about the power of data and I just didn’t see it.

I come from a world where skill in design and creativity can make almost anything work, and creating words isn’t frowned upon—or at least that’s what I told myself.  I figured that I could sell my Corporate Responsibility story with words and pictures and do just fine—until I had one of those painful “Aha” moments.

I remember—with a level of clarity that I wish I could have on about any other topic—exactly where I was and who I was with. One of our sales managers had invited me to do a Quarterly Business Review, or QBR, with one of our academic customers in California. This was a slam dunk—I could talk about our Corporate Responsibility program in my sleep. And that is just what I did.

It went well—lots of questions and talk about how we could collaborate and move the topic forward with that particular customer. Then one gentleman, who had been particularly quiet, spoke up. He said, “This is great and all, but how can you help us quantify this?”

Say what? Quantify? Do we really need to go there? Can’t we just do stuff and make an impact? Of course it’s more nuanced than that, but if we want to boil it down, that’s what I was thinking at the time.

That moment, though, was the transformational moment for our work at MilliporeSigma—not only for our overall Corporate Responsibility program, but more specifically, for our industry leading Green Chemistry program.
