Allie Kelly, executive director of The Ray will be one of the panelists for AIA New York Chapter's "Viral Voices VI - Virtual Displacement" on Thursday, March 30th at the AIA Center for Architecture.

As the digital revolution continues to affect our everyday lives, counterintuitively, many new processes born in the digital realm are now finding the need to become physical and geofixed. Once ephemeral, only existing online, new media companies have begun to invest in the design and production of physical retail environments, vehicles, kiosks, and other public interfaces, adding new variables to the built environment and forcing an evolution in long-standing conceptions of urban placemaking. What had once been described as the accelerating process by which “all that was solid will melt into air” may also set into motion countervailing effects by which what “was air now turns back into solid” – as digital practices and firms that once existed bring their data, media, and products back into the physical world.

SOURCE:ReportAlert

DESCRIPTION:

Today, Pfizer launched its 2016 Annual Review, which provides an in-depth look at all of the ways Pfizer is accelerating patient impact and fulfilling its purpose: to make innovative medicines and vaccines that significantly improve people’s lives.

Every day we use our knowledge, expertise and resources to find new ways to positively impact public health, which in turn advances other global development objectives. We call this approach to global health “Entrepreneurship for Good,” and we are committed to using this approach to help achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In the Annual Review, we share more about our commitment to the UN SDGs. Some of the 2016 achievements include:

  • Helping to provide more than 250,000 patients over 1.7 million Pfizer prescriptions for free or at a savings, through Pfizer RxPathways®.* Supporting Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being.
  • Expanding Pfizer’s humanitarian assistance program to enable broader access to its pneumococcal vaccine by offering it at the lowest prevailing price in countries most in need. Supporting Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being.
  • Donating more than 600 million doses of an antibiotic for the treatment of trachoma, the world’s leading infectious cause of blindness, since a partnership with the International Trachoma Initiative (ITI) was formed in 1998. In 2016 alone, Pfizer donated and shipped more than 120 million doses. Supporting Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being and Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
  • Collaborating with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation to help broaden access to Pfizer's long-acting injectable contraceptive for women most in need living in some of the world’s poorest countries. Since 2014, over six million doses of its long-acting injectable contraceptive have been shipped to 20 developing countries. Supporting Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being and Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
  • Providing funding support to the China Tobacco Control Partnership, which provides grants and expert support to five cities in China to help ensure smoking is no longer the norm. Supporting Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being and Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
  • Working to reduce carbon emissions, increasing water efficiency and looking for ways to minimize waste. Supporting Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.

Along with these achievements, Pfizer also increased its position on the Access to Medicine Index among the top 20 pharmaceutical companies from position 16 in 2014 to position 14 in 2016. Several factors contributed to our higher score, including structured donation programs, nearly doubling the size of our pipeline through research and development efforts, widespread enhancements of pricing, manufacturing and distribution efforts and strengthening our approach to building supply chains.

Responsible sourcing and animal welfare commitment to include cage-free eggs worldwide

SOURCE:Aramark

DESCRIPTION:

PHILADELPHIA, March 13, 2017 /3BL Media/ – Aramark (NYSE: ARMK), a global leader in food, facilities management and uniforms, announced today the latest step on its journey to become an even more responsible company, focused on supporting its diverse workforce, advancing consumer health and wellness, protecting the environment, and strengthening communities. The company is expanding its commitments to responsible sourcing and animal welfare by extending its 100 percent cage-free egg commitment worldwide by 2025, including liquid and shell eggs. Operating in 19 countries, Aramark purchases over 300 million eggs annually. In the U.S., the company’s largest market, Aramark has been serving 100 percent cage-free shell eggs since 2015 and is transitioning to 100 percent cage-free liquid eggs by 2020.

Aramark’s global cage-free egg commitment builds upon its industry-leading animal welfare policy, established in 2015, requiring suppliers to establish animal welfare protocols that prevents mistreatment from confinement, painful procedures and rapid growth. The company’s cage-free eggs decision follows its industry pioneering move in 2016 to improve the treatment of broiler chickens. All of the company’s policies and decisions reflect insights and expertise from its independent Sustainable Sourcing Advisory Panel, comprised of business experts, suppliers, academia and animal welfare organizations.

“Aramark’s shift to entirely cage-free eggs for its supply chain globally is a significant advancement for the treatment of egg-laying hens,” said Josh Balk, vice president of farm animal protection at the Humane Society of the United States. “The company’s overall efforts to improve the lives of farm animals makes it a leader in the food industry.”

“Aramark’s announcement to take their cage-free commitment worldwide will impact the lives of almost a million hens each year and illustrates the company’s continued dedication to farm animal welfare,” said Rachel Dreskin, U.S. Head of Food Business, Compassion in World Farming. “It also emphasizes that the tidal wave of change coming for laying hens is not limited by geographical borders.”

Aramark recently published an Animal Welfare Progress Report highlighting the company’s ongoing advancement of responsible sourcing and animal welfare goals, including:

Becoming a first in foodservice committed to the humane treatment of broiler chickens by calling on suppliers to address breed selection, space, enrichments and slaughtering practices by 2024.
Transitioning 30 percent of its U.S. pork purchases to group-housed in 2017, while working with suppliers, industry and animal welfare organizations to increase supplies enabling 100 percent group-housed purchases by 2022.
Incorporating responsible sourcing policies into supplier contracts that feature recognized, third-party certifications from the Global Animal Partnership (GAP), Certified Humane by Humane Farm Animal Care and others.

“We are unwavering in our commitment to work with suppliers and animal welfare organizations to advance responsible sourcing practices across our global supply chain,” said Scott Barnhart, Aramark’s Senior Vice President, Global Supply Chain and Procurement. “We are pleased that Aramark’s cage-free egg learnings in the U.S. are being applied to address the remaining portion of our total egg purchases around the world.”
The Humane Society of the U.S. honored Aramark with the Henry Spira Humane Corporate Progress Award for its commitment to broiler chicken welfare, instituting an Animal Welfare Policy and addressing confinement conditions of farm animals. The company also received the 2016 Good Egg Award from Compassion in World Farming for its commitment to cage-free eggs in the U.S.

Green Thread, the company’s environmental sustainability platform, brings to life Aramark’s commitments and programs focused on sourcing responsibly, minimizing waste, running buildings efficiently and managing its fleet in an effective manner. Learn more here.

Republic Services Makes Disposing of Batteries and Bulbs Effortless

DESCRIPTION:

When setting your clocks forward for Daylight Savings, remember to change those batteries in your smoke detectors and light bulbs that need replacing.

Daylight Savings is a smart time for businesses to replace batteries in fire alarms, smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors, as well as replacing fluorescent light bulbs and lighting ballasts. Republic Services offers two simple solutions for businesses to discard items that contain mercury, lead or other hazardous materials that should not be thrown away with regular waste.

Universal waste items like batteries, light bulbs and lighting ballasts can contain chemicals or potentially harmful materials like lead or mercury. When disposed of improperly, these items can present environmental and human health risks. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) designates universal waste items as hazardous waste, and certain state and local governments have additional compliance requirements for the disposal of universal waste items. Because of these regulations and environmental threats, universal waste needs to be managed with care in accordance with government regulations.

Republic Services offers businesses two simple solutions for the responsible management of universal waste items, as well as compliance with regulatory requirements:

Mail Back Kits: designed for businesses with smaller quantities of universal waste items. How it works:

·         Receive prepaid, pre-addressed mail-back kits, government-certified tri-layer packaging to ensure safe shipping;

·         Pack your universal waste items in the provided mail-back kits;

·         Ship back all packed universal waste material; and

·         Receive a Certificate of Recycling to validate regulatory compliance.

Pack-Up & Pick-Up: customized for businesses with larger quantities of universal waste items. How it works:

·         Receive a proposal for approval based on your universal waste generation;

·         Schedule a pickup date and time that’s convenient for you;

·         Prepare and package your universal waste prior to pick up;

·         Load your packaged materials onto our trucks;

·         Your packaged universal waste is transferred to the nearest facility for proper recycling; and

·         Receive a Certificate of Recycling to validate regulatory compliance.

Whenever possible, universal waste items can be repurposed into new materials. According to the EPA, newly manufactured batteries are made from as much as 80 percent recycled materials. In addition, according to Fresh Energy, a Minnesota-based not-for-profit environmental policy organization, more than 95 percent of an LED light bulb can be recycled.

Trust Is in Crisis. Listening Is the Answer. Snapshot 2017 Can Help.

$

0

SOURCE:America's Charities

DESCRIPTION:

The 2017 Edelman Trust Barometer—the annual global trust and credibility survey—was recently published and the news isn’t good.

Edelman is calling it a “global implosion of trust” with the crux being that “trust is in crisis around the world.”

They report that trust in four key institutions — business, government, NGOs, and media — has declined broadly, which hasn’t happened since Edelman began tracking trust among these segments in 2012.

As the Edelman report states, “we have moved beyond the point of trust being simply a key factor in product purchase or selection of employment opportunity; it is now the deciding factor in whether a society can function.”

Whether a society can function. These are heady words, and it’s appropriate to be a little shocked and even perhaps a bit scared by these words. I know I felt afraid. So, I’m going to go ahead and give you a moment to let that sink in.…

Done? Good. Because we have a lot to do. And make no mistake: this is not a time for delay or dithering. Now is the time to take action.

Believe it or not, among this scary stuff, is a message of hope. Employers, specifically employee giving engagement leaders, have a real opportunity here. According to Edelman, of the four institutions, “business is viewed as the only one that can make a difference.”

How Businesses Can Act on This Opportunity

What mechanism is in place to do just that? Employee giving and engagement, of course. CSR and workplace giving, of course. Corporate philanthropy, of course. In other words: YOU.

As Edelman reports, “Among those who are uncertain about whether the system is working for them, it is business (58 percent) that they trust most.”

And not only do businesses have a chance – it’s actually an expectation.

“Not only are the stakes high for business, but so are the expectations that it will act. Three out of four general population respondents agree that a company can take actions that both increase profits and improve the economic and social conditions in the community where it operates.”

So how do employers rebuild trust and restore faith in the system? How do we start addressing people’s fears and put people first?

We listen.

Well, we do way more than that, and in another post I’ll tackle that, but right now I want to provide you with a FREE tool to help you listen: the Snapshot 2017 survey. As you may have heard, America’s Charities will be releasing its Snapshot 2017 Report this fall to share employee giving and engagement trends from the donor perspective. Right now, we are asking organizations across the country to distribute the Snapshot 2017 survey to their employees in the hopes of securing as many responses as possible.

Here's the Best Part:

The Snapshot 2017 survey can act as your employee listening tool. Your staff’s responses can help you:

  • better understand what your employees value and how they make decisions about charitable giving and volunteering
  • learn which activities provide greatest benefit for and impact on employees and tell a more compelling story about these benefits
  • improve your employee giving and engagement over time

And I might add – this survey will help you build that bridge to your employees and gain, or strengthen, that trust. In today’s age of distrust, that is absolutely crucial.

How it Works:

This survey only works as a listening tool if you share it with your employees using a unique survey URL, which we will create just for your organization upon your request. At the conclusion of the survey, we will send you your organization’s full aggregate employee dataset, which will provide an array of actionable intel. You could also use it to benchmark against the other responses, which will be shared when we release the Snapshot 2017 report this fall.

Time Commitment: 10-15 minutes tops

Here’s another great part – it’s not a huge time commitment on your employee’s part, and their responses are anonymous and confidential. The survey is 10 questions, multiple choice, and should take no more than 10-15 minutes to complete. When it’s all said and done, your employees’ anonymous responses will be aggregated with hundreds of other confidential responses from employees across the country and published into a narrative report in September.

Ready to Get Started? Contact us for Your Unique Survey URL:

If you’d like to listen to your employees, please contact me at Lindsay Nichols at lnichols@charities.org and I’ll be happy to answer any questions you have, as well as provide you with a unique URL.

I appreciate your consideration, as this will go far in improving the field of employee giving and engagement.

And I truly believe your employees will appreciate it as well. People want to be heard, and your employees are no exception.

Most importantly, the time is ripe to cement your relationship with your employees.

As Edelman states, “With a higher trust score than government, business is, in effect, the last retaining wall, holding back a rising tide of dissatisfaction. If business disappoints, it too will fall victim to the rising tide. Recognizing that the treatment and relationship with employees and customers alike is integral to building trust, business should adopt an ‘inside out’ approach, which begins with listening.”

The big idea of James Surowiecki’s manifesto, The Wisdom of Crowds, is working its way into business strategy. That book explains how a diverse collection of independent individuals is more likely to make certain types of decisions—and predictions—better than individuals or experts. Its thesis has helped fuel an explosive growth in business partnerships and collaborations, in open competitions and crowdsourcing efforts.

All are aimed at finding better solutions to today’s problems by harnessing collective brainpower. The latest such project is Imagine Chemistry, a program launched by AkzoNobel in conjunction with KPMG, to “solve several real-life chemistry-related challenges.”

The effort includes many references to the model of the collective as its organizational framework: partnership, integrated approach, collaboration, and joint development. Says AkzoNobel, “’Imagine Chemistry’ is the latest example of doing innovation differently.” I'm John Howell for 3BL Media.

Pledge of ongoing support enables Red Cross to prepare for and respond to disasters

SOURCE:General Motors

DESCRIPTION:

WASHINGTON, March 14, 2017 /3BL Media/ -- The American Red Cross today recognized General Motors (GM), headquartered in Detroit, Michigan, for supporting Red Cross disaster relief at home and around the world through the Annual Disaster Giving Program (ADGP) with an annual donation of $1 million.

ADGP members pledge donations year-round, in advance of major disasters, to ensure the Red Cross can respond immediately with comfort and care when disasters occur, help families during the recovery process, and ensure communities become better prepared for the next disaster. Donations from members like GM support Red Cross disaster relief activities, including sheltering, feeding, purchasing and distributing relief supplies, storing equipment, maintaining vehicles, and providing health and emotional support.

"The American Red Cross relies on the generosity of our volunteers, donors and partners to fulfill our lifesaving mission," said American Red Cross President and CEO Gail McGovern. "Thanks to the support of GM and other ADGP members, the Red Cross can immediately respond to the needs of people affected by disasters whenever and wherever they strike."

Each year, the Red Cross responds to nearly 64,000 disasters across the country, including home fires, hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, tornadoes and wildfires. Red Cross services are provided to people in need of assistance at no cost and regardless of income through the generosity of Red Cross donors.

Mentoring for Youth Entrepreneurship in Latin America

SOURCE:PYXERA Global

DESCRIPTION:

Finding quality jobs for young people in Latin America, especially jobs outside of the informal sector that provide fair wages and just working conditions, is a growing socioeconomic concern. The United Nations reports that Latin America and the Caribbean are experiencing the largest youth population in history with one in five people between the ages of 15-24. The unemployment rate for this age group is three times higher than for people between the ages of 30-64. For many young people, entrepreneurship has become a survival strategy, demonstrated by the fact that small businesses employ 67 percent of the workforce. However, 90 percent of these small businesses fail within the first two years.

MicroMentor, a social enterprise initiative of Mercy Corps, presents a solution by creating a nexus between budding young entrepreneurs and the resources they need to build sustainable businesses through mentoring. The results thus far have been encouraging. Through the MicroMentor platform, young entrepreneurs who receive mentoring support from professionals in the private and public sectors report increased skills development, increased access to external resources, and overall improved business outcomes. Participating mentors report building their own skills and expertise while their employers find them to be more engaged and productive.

SOURCE:Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE)

DESCRIPTION:

Though a lot has changed since the garage days of Hewlett-Packard Company, that passionate, persistent, and bold entrepreneurial spirit has remained a core part of our company and culture. And on HPE's Living Progress team, it is with this drive that we create and actively support sustainable solutions for our company, our customers and our world. This week, as we wrap up the Living Progress Challenge, we’re reflecting upon our past year managing this innovative program, and we’re celebrating the creation of four new digital tools that will help make a positive difference in the world.

If you’ve been reading this blog, you’ve probably seen the updates on the Living Progress Challenge over the past year, such as here and here. We sought to bring HPE expertise and technology to individuals and NGO experts in the field in order to address pressing social and environmental challenges that demand bold action.

Launched in November 2015, the Challenge asked the global community: what digital tools and software applications would you create to improve people’s lives? Our goal: Improve the lives of 1 million people by 2020.

After a highly competitive process with more than 130 proposals submitted from 28 countries around the world:

  • 17 proposals were selected and designed into prototypes
  • 10 teams pitched live at the Living Progress Challenge Finals pitch event in New York
  • 4 innovative solutions were ultimately selected as our final winners

These four solutions span a range of impact areas—from helping rural women save money and gain access to financial tools; to combatting the illegal trade of fisheries products; to connecting youth in Mexico with mentors; and helping the world’s largest volunteer organization transform the way people engage in their communities.

Each are now in final testing phases and will be launching over the coming weeks and months.

These teams reflect that same innovative and entrepreneurial drive that we honor in start-ups, and that we see as core to who we are at HPE. For some of the NGO teams, this was the first time pursuing digital tools into their problem-solving. Teams were courageous, they learned about their user needs and wants, and they iterated to apply new learnings. They were fast and smart, motivated by the profound belief in a vision of what was possible.

The potential for technology to solve challenges in new ways, to enable faster scale, and to invite people around the world into the global economy is limitless. With technological innovation and entrepreneurial resolve we know change is possible. We hope everyone will join us as we track the Living Progress Challenge solutions that will launch over the coming months. We know the deeply exciting advances for the organizations, and the people they serve, lie just ahead.

We are using our 70 years’ experience in antibiotics to tackle resistance.

SOURCE:GSK

DESCRIPTION:

Resistance to antibiotics is a major public health crisis, with 700,000 people dying every year from drug resistant infections. We have 70 years of expertise in antibiotics and we’re committed to continuing our research in this area.

The most advanced antibiotic in our pipeline, gepotidacin, is moving into the final phase of clinical testing and in 2016 was granted Qualified Infectious Disease Product status by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which would expedite review of a future US filing. This novel drug was developed in collaboration with the US government’s Biomedical Advanced Research Development Authority.

Our vaccines can also make a key contribution in this area by preventing bacterial and viral infections and averting the need for antibiotics. In addition, we have 15 potential new vaccines in our pipeline, including those targeting diseases like B Streptococcus bacterium.

In 2016, we opened the Institute for Infectious Diseases and Public Health in China to address local health threats posed by antibiotic resistance. We are working with other companies and government organisations to set targets to reduce antibacterial resistance, building on our commitment to the Davos Declaration on Combating Antimicrobial Resistance.

As members of the Innovative Medicines Initiative’s NewDrugs4BadBugs programme, we work in partnership with industry, academia and biotech organisations to combat antibiotic resistance in Europe.

Danone and Nestlé Waters Launch NaturALL Bottle Alliance with California Startup to Develop 100% Bio-Based Bottles

SOURCE:Nestlé in the U.S.

DESCRIPTION:

Paris, France, March 13, 2017 /3BL Media/ - Danone and Nestlé Waters, the world’s two largest bottled water companies, have joined forces with Origin Materials, a startup based in Sacramento, California, to form the NaturALL Bottle Alliance. Together, the three partners aim to develop and launch at commercial scale a PET plastic bottle made from bio-based material, i.e. 100% sustainable and renewable resources. The project uses biomass feedstocks, such as previously used cardboard and sawdust, so it does not divert resources or land from food production for human or animal consumption. The technology represents a scientific breakthrough for the sector, and the Alliance aims to make it available to the entire food and beverage industry.

Teaming up to accelerate development of 100% bio-based bottles

For decades, both Nestlé Waters and Danone have been committed to sustainable business practices, notably by continuously improving their environmental performances and promoting the development of a circular economy. A large part of these efforts has focused on developing innovative packaging solutions that are recyclable and made with renewable resources, as well as the promotion of recycling. After identifying the unique approach of Origin Materials separately, the two companies decided to team up to accelerate development of this promising technology.

“Our goal is to establish a circular economy for packaging by sourcing sustainable materials and creating a second life for all plastics,” declared Frederic Jouin, head of R&D for plastic materials at Danone. “We believe it’s possible to replace traditional fossil materials with bio-based packaging materials. By teaming up and bringing together our complementary expertise and resources, the Alliance can move faster in developing 100% renewable and recyclable PET plastic at commercial scale.”

Danone and Nestlé Waters are providing expertise and teams, as well as financial support, to help Origin Materials make this technology available to the entire food and beverage industry in record time.

This next-generation PET will be as light in weight, transparent, recyclable and protective of the product as today’s PET, while being better for the planet. The exclusive use of renewable feedstocks which do not divert resources or land from food production is the Alliance’s main focus area. The R&D will focus initially on cardboard, sawdust and wood chips but other biomass materials, such as rice hulls, straw and agricultural residue could be explored.

“Current technology on the market makes it possible to have 30% bio-PET,” noted John Bissell, Chief Executive Officer of Origin Materials. “Our breakthrough technology aims to reach 100% bio-based bottles at commercial scale. With the help of our Alliance partners, Origin Materials will be able to scale up a technology which has already been proven at the pilot level.”

A packaging revolution for all

The NaturALL Bottle Alliance partners consider that everyone should benefit from this new material, so the technology will be accessible for the entire beverage industry. This unique approach demonstrates the allies’ commitment to open innovation and sustainable business.

“It’s incredible to think that, in the near future, the industry will be able to use a renewably sourced packaging material, which does not compete with food production and contributes to a better planet,” commented Klaus Hartwig, Head of R&D for Nestlé Waters. “It therefore made perfect sense for us to join forces through this Alliance to develop this innovative technology in a large scale and in the shortest time period possible. This is an exciting journey and we are proud to be part of it.”

A packaging revolution in record time

Origin Materials has already produced samples of 80% bio-based PET in its pilot plant in Sacramento. Construction of a “pioneer plant” will begin in 2017, with production of the first samples of 60+% bio-based PET to start in 2018. The initial volume goal for this first step is to bring 5,000 metric tons of bio-based PET to the market. Thanks to their complementary skills and shared vision, the NaturALL Bottle Alliance aims to develop the process for producing at least 75% bio-based PET plastic bottles at commercial scale as early as in 2020, scaling up to 95% in 2022. The partners will continue to conduct research to increase the level of bio-based content, with the objective of reaching 100%

Path to Driverless Transportation Rolls Through Data Collection, Analytics

$

SOURCE:Black & Veatch

DESCRIPTION:

Data collection and the processing power needed to support autonomous driving are huge areas of focus for development. Companies are investing heavily in driverless technologies, evidenced by news that Intel Corp. is acquiring Mobileye, an autonomous driving technology leader whose portfolio includes machine learning, road mapping, sensors, and data analytics among other technologies.

The $15 billion purchase of Mobileye by Intel has enormous implications for automotive chipset integration in the autonomous driving market. For Intel, mapping may be the first application that the chip-maker could commercialize with the Mobileye acquisition. Real-time mapping is a useful component to today’s advanced driving tools, and one that provides an opportunity to integrate chipsets within automotive management systems. These same processors can communicate with vehicle sensors and control systems to provide precise location and relation information.

Such applications require low-latency, real-time processing. Easing traffic congestion is a key objective of Smart City programs and there is growing interest in improving vehicular movement and optimization of path. Assisted driving will require large volumes of processing support for incident avoidance and emergency braking.

For more information about the connections between smart cities, smart transportation and data analytics, download Black & Veatch's 2017 Strategic Directions: Smart City/Smart Utility Report

Integration of in-vehicle communications technology is a significant revenue opportunity. Virtually every automotive manufacturer has an initiative focused on assisted or autonomous driving. Intel’s acquisition of Mobileye provides them a path to more rapidly commercialize that technology. In the mid-term, there will be opportunities to provide intelligence to autonomous vehicles like small transit buses traveling along predictable paths. Trials of this technology are already underway in many locations all over the world. In the longer term, full autonomous driving will emerge.

It will be important to consider the implications of data’s role in smarter transportation, especially for cities. Leaders of the smart city movement believe open data architecture will promote growth and development within their urban cores, resulting in an increased economic base. As more devices become chip-enabled, more data is collected and analyzed, with processing taking place at the edge where the device resides, and through communications networks and the cloud to places where the data can be aggregated and analyzed.

At every stage of this ecosystem there is opportunity for products that include components developed or manufactured by Intel and their competitors. Companies specializing in systems integration can help cities take full advantage of these emerging technologies. Greater volumes of data means increased need for servers and data centers.

These are all growth opportunities for Intel and other companies seeking to establish beachheads in the market for smart transportation and smart cities. Through targeted acquisitions like Mobileye, Intel may be able to increase the likelihood that it is their chipsets that become part of the foundational architecture of autonomous driving technology. These and other technology companies want to drive further up the stack to ensure their product is at the core. If they can make additional revenue off the applications themselves, they can generate even stronger returns for their shareholders.
