Booktime Promotes Social Responsibility by the Book

SOURCE:Justmeans

DESCRIPTION:

Inspiring children to read is one of the greatest gifts that parents and educators can give to the younger generation. Research suggests that the habit of reading equals to a full year's advantage at school and casual observation seems to confirm that those who read gain more general knowledge and express themselves better, besides having all the fun that reading provides.

That's why Booktime, a UK charity that works to develop a taste for reading in school children, is dedicated to the cause. The program, which has arrived at its seventh year, has gifted more than nine million books since it was launched in 2006. Recently, it launched its 2012 edition, when it will be distributing 1.45 million books to 731,000 children in their first year of school.

For the launch, the organization put together a fun-packed event in London, UK, when actress Tamsin Greig, who appeared in the BBC'2's "Episodes" series, read from The Tale of a Naughty Little Rabbit to 30 primary school children at The Cathedral School of St Saviour and St Mary Overy primary school in Southwark.

World’s first use of electric vehicle batteries for energy storage nears grid testing

SOURCE:General Motors

DESCRIPTION:

SAN FRANCISCO, November 28, 2012 /3BL Media/ - General Motors and ABB today showed the next stage in battery reuse, the repackaging of five used Chevrolet Volt batteries into a modular unit capable of providing two hours of electricity needed by three to five average American homes.

The uninterruptable power supply and grid power balancing system was demonstrated during GM’s Electrification Experience. The prototype unit provided 25 kW of power and 50 kWh of energy to power all the support lighting and audiovisual equipment in an “off-grid” structure used for the event.

“GM’s battery development extends throughout the entire life of the battery, including secondary use,” said Pablo Valencia, GM senior manager of battery lifecycle management. "In many cases, when an EV battery has reached the end of its life in an automotive application, only 30 percent or less of its life has been used.  This leaves a tremendous amount of life that can be applied to other applications like powering a structure before the battery is recycled.”

GM and ABB last year demonstrated how a Chevrolet Volt battery pack could be used to collect energy and feed it back to the grid and deliver supplemental power to homes or businesses.

During today’s demonstration, the energy storage system was run in a “remote power back-up” mode where 100 percent of the power for the facility came from Volt batteries through ABB’s Energy Storage Inverter system.  A similar application could one day be used to power a group of homes or small commercial buildings during a power outage, allow for storage of power during inexpensive periods for use during expensive peak demand, or help make up for gaps in solar, wind or other renewable power generation.

These functions, along with frequency regulation on electric distribution systems, could someday be used by utilities to reduce cost to customers and improve the quality of power delivery. These applications are referred to as community energy storage to distinguish them from substation-size energy storage projects.

“We showed today how fast this research concept is turning into reality,” said Allen Burchett, ABB’s senior vice president for Business Development in North America.  “The ABB-GM Volt battery system is the world’s first use of car batteries as possible back-up power for homes and other commercial uses. We will be installing it on the grid soon to complete the technical evaluation, and this will tell us all what smart grid applications are possible, like back-up power, reducing energy cost, strengthening utilities' distribution systems and storing surplus renewable energy.”

ABB’s research center in Raleigh, N.C., conducted the research and development, and ABB’s Medium Voltage business unit in Lake Mary, Fla., is managing the proof-of-concept testing, market research and product development.  As the world’s largest EV fast-charging company and leader in smart grid and energy storage, ABB works with other auto companies, battery manufacturers and utilities to help make electric power and industrial operations more productive and efficient.

GM is focused on assuring battery systems used in future Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac vehicles provide environmental and societal benefits beyond their use in the vehicle. Long before a battery is recycled, secondary use provides the opportunity to fully utilize the battery resource.

GM is dedicated to waste reduction throughout its operations, and its worldwide manufacturing facilities combined recycle 90 percent of the waste they generate. Ensuring that batteries are part of reducing the environmental impact of its vehicles and operations is part of the company’s roadmap to sustainability.

HP has once again been ranked among the top companies in the world for its sustainability efforts in two major environmental reports.

First, for the third year in a row, HP ranked 2nd on the 2012 Newsweek Green Rankings of the top 500 U.S. companies and secured the 22nd position on the Global 500 list. HP also earned a top spot on the Greenpeace Guide to Greener Electronics, placing second on the list and ranking as the top U.S. company.

Placement on the Newsweek Green Rankings lists is determined by an overall score derived from research and analysis provided by Trucost and Sustainalytics, two leading environmental research firms. A company’s overall “Green Score” is based on its environmental performance in the areas of environmental impact, environmental management, and disclosure.

In this year’s rankings, HP improved in all three categories and in the combined Green Score—rising from an overall score of 75.8 in 2011 to 78.5 in 2012.

HP scored 5.7 points out of a possible 10 in this year’s Greenpeace Guide to Greener Electronics, which evaluates leading consumer electronics companies based on their commitment and progress in three environmental criteria: Energy and Climate, Greener Products, and Sustainable Operations.

Greenpeace recognized HP for efforts in Sustainable Operations, highlighting our paper procurement policy, which bans suppliers linked to illegal logging, as well as our policies and practices related to the sourcing of conflict minerals. GM’s Lockport Plant Achieves Landfill-Free Status

SOURCE:General Motors

DESCRIPTION:

LOCKPORT, N.Y., Novmeber 29, 2012 /3BL Media/ - General Motors’ Components Holdings Lockport plant is the automaker’s 103rdfacility to achieve landfill-free status, reusing, recycling or converting to energy all waste from its daily operations.

The site, which makes heating and air conditioning components and radiators for a variety of Chevrolet,BuickGMC, and Cadillac vehicles, last year recycled more than 6 million pounds of aluminum – the primary material in vehicle heat exchangers. Recycling various byproducts such as metals, pallets, cardboard and plastic helped the site generate nearly $3.7 million in revenue so far this year.

“Landfill-free became a reality because of our dedicated team,” said Patrick Curtis, plant manager, GM Components Holdings Lockport. “With their feedback, we determined the best places for recycling containers so that we can easily separate our waste. Our goal is to make recycling convenient so it doesn’t disrupt their routine.

“We’re never done improving; achieving this milestone should instill even more excitement,” Curtis said.

Lockport overcame a challenge on the path to landfill-free by collaborating with a recycling partner. Together they identified a way to extract and recycle various metals from residue resulting from bonding the components that make up a heat exchanger.

“Lockport’s recycling efforts, community commitment, and dedication to reducing environmental impact is a great example of GM’s drive to design and build vehicles in a sustainable way,” said John Bradburn, GM manager of waste-reduction efforts. “We continue to gain and share expertise as we add more sites to our landfill-free list.”

Lockport’s environmental activities extend beyond its walls. Employees volunteer with a statewide Erie Canal cleanup activity and it hosts an electronics recycling day with the county’s refuse district where residents and small business can safely recycle their old computers, mobile phones and other electronics.

GM recycles and reuses more waste from its manufacturing facilities than any other automaker, and no other automaker has as many sites contributing zero waste to landfill. Its landfill-free progress helped it earn recognition as a Detroit Free Press Green Leader and Waste & Recycling News Green Corporate Citizen. GM is the only automaker inducted into the U.S. EPA’s WasteWise Hall of Fame.

GM recently published a downloadable blueprint, "The Business Case for Zero Waste", intended to help companies of all sizes and industries reduce waste and create efficiencies. For more information on GM’s environmental commitment, visit its sustainability report and environmental blog.

Guest Post: Khan Academy Approach Poised to Solve a "Wicked Problem" in Healthcare

$
0
0

SOURCE:3BL Media, LLC

DESCRIPTION:

The current Forbes cover features Salman Khan who may be having more impact on education than any other teacher before him. His impact isn’t limited to education.

Education and Healthcare are two industries least affected by technology, however this has begun to change. From millions of students and parents to Bill Gates, the Khan Academy has impressed many and inspired some teachers to flip the classroom lecture/homework model on its head as described in the video below. Doctors are now recognizing Khan’s approach can help solve a wicked confluence of issues.

Wicked Confluence

It’s generally known that patients don’t comprehend or remember 80-90% of what doctors tell them when they are with them. Meanwhile doctors are time starved. [See Think Your Doctor's Busy Now? Just Wait Until Obamacare Kicks In.] Worse, they are hitting the “replay button” hundreds of times describing to patients common diagnoses, treatment options, prescriptions, etc. Every doctor has their own FAQ. Since 80-90% of what they say is forgotten, this is a colossal waste of talent and time. This goes from being a waste of time to being a disaster for healthcare providers as the rapid shift to paying for outcomes over mere activity. The fee-for-value model replaces the old “do more, bill more” healthcare reimbursement model that is bankrupting states, feds and families. The catchphrase is increasingly “No outcome, no income” which presents a huge challenge for healthcare providers. Fortunately, necessity is the mother of invention. Like Sal Khan, smart healthcare providers are flipping their “classroom”.

Read more about flipping the classroom in The Economist

As you can see in the video, technology has brought a human element back into the classroom making it more interactive and tuned to specific kids’ needs. Why limit this to students? Why not use this model to help improve health outcomes? In fact, we may not have a choice with the ever-increasing shortage of primary care physicians. One can look to what happened after Romneycare was implemented as a preview of what is to come. The shortage of primary care providers only increased. Simply trying to put physicians on a faster hamster wheel isn’t the solution. In fact, that is part of the problem.

One of the nice things about Khan Academy is learners with different skill levels can watch the videos in different ways. Some may get it just watching it once while others may want to replay the video over a few times before a concept sinks in. In many ways doctors are teachers wearing white coats. In fact, they have taught many of the same lessons hundreds or thousands of times. Some forward-looking doctors have caught on to this.

Doctors as Teachers

Perhaps because Dr. Wendy Sue Swanson was a teacher before she was a pediatrician, she was naturally drawn to using her videos and blogs to benefit her patients’ families. [Disclosure: Dr. Swanson is a Medical Advisor to my company, Avado.] Dr. Swanson shared the reaction she gets from patients. “I’ll launch into something in clinic and a family will say, ‘Dr Swanson, you don’t have to explain that, I read your blog post/saw your video, etc!’ We start at a different place. A place that feels easier to connect, more informed, and one with more respect for our mutual vantage points.”

Click here to watch the video: Understanding Growth Charts - Seattle Mama Doc

Click here for the accompanying blog post on Understanding Growth Charts.

Dr. Rob Lamberts wrote a piece entitled Riding Dinosaurs. He has recognized the shortcomings of an office visit that is heavily driven by the billing needs versus a long-term focus on a patient’s overall health. In his own way, he’s suggesting a model for higher value physical exams.

If there is a need for seeing the doctor in person, 95% of the encounter is already done and documented, leaving only the physical exam to be done in person – something that can be accomplished in a few minutes for the vast majority of visits.

Dr. Natasha Burgert has written about how social media has changed her medical practice. Here is how she describe the benefit to her practice and patients.

Investing time in relevant and complete posts actually saves me time in the long run. Questions I am repeatedly asked,  like “How do I start solid foods?“, can be answered quickly and completely by directing them to my site. This saves face-to-face clinic time for more specific concerns for their child. I can actively communicate, acknowledge, and positively influence the choices that my families make for their children between the checkups. My anticipatory guidance can be repeated, reinforced, and repeated again.

Dr. Burgert explains The New Infant Acetaminophen (Tylenol) in this video: Tylenol 2.0: The New Infant Acetaminophen

Of course, the benefit of doctor videos aren’t limited to primary care. Specialists such as Orthopedic Surgeon, Howards Luks, also have been realizing the benefit of videos.  As Dr. Luks states, “Every patient who sees my videos prior to their visit says. ‘OMG it’s you, you’re just like you are in the videos.’ Very powerful. It humanizes your practice.” The video below is an example of Dr. Luks’ video explaining Achilles tendon ruptures.

Click here to watch the video: Achilles Tendon Tears - Is Surgery Necessary?

Bit by bit, there is major change underway. Many doctors, particularly in primary care, are unhappy about the way they have been practicing and are unleashing their own creativity. Here is how one describes how these current delivery model changes are:

So much of our present care delivery is rote and could be practiced online or provided via video/blog/text. And that the ‘real medicine,’ the service and the relationship or helping people in moments of anxiety and indecision are rare and undervalued. That oddly enough, there is simply no time in the day to do what matters most. Or if we get the opportunity to forge a real partnership, it comes at the cost of making somebody wait, and running late. So yes, we’re headed in the right direction by making these changes.

Imagine targeted video or textual content that has been curated or created by your physician automatically being delivered to you based on your diagnosis or condition into a secure environment (i.e., most people wouldn’t want articles on their medical conditions going into their regular email where others might see it). This isn’t a science fiction scenario. Rather, it will be possible to do today. Patient relationship management systems are replacing providers’ old patient portals (if they even had one) that did little to impact health outcomes. Modern patient-focused systems are focused instead on improved health, not just administrative items. See Patient Engagement is the Blockbuster Drug of the Century for more.

Janssen Announces Intent Not to Enforce Patents for Darunavir in Resource-Limited Settings

Policy Aims to Support a Sustainable Supply of Medically Acceptable Generic Darunavir in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and Least Developed Countries (LDC)

SOURCE:Johnson & Johnson

DESCRIPTION:

November 29, 2012 /3BL Media/ - The Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson today announced their intention not to enforce the patents they own and control on the antiretroviral (ARV) drug darunavir provided the darunavir product is medically acceptable and is used only in resource-limited settings.[1] This announcement is intended to assure generic manufacturers that they may manufacture high quality darunavir product used in SSA and the LDCs without a concern that Janssen will accuse these activities of infringing its darunavir patents.

This new policy anticipates a greater future need to supply affordable generic versions of darunavir (brand name PREZISTA®) for the treatment of people living with HIV in the territory, and is consistent with the Company’s focus on access to medicines in those countries with the highest rates of HIV infection and economic vulnerability.

“We are pleased to take this significant step toward bringing our  innovations to meaningfully impact the health of people living with HIV and enhance access to our medicines for those in need,” said Paul Stoffels, Scientific Officer and Worldwide Chairman, Pharmaceuticals, Johnson & Johnson. “As part of this commitment, we believe that an effective access strategy includes responsible intellectual property management and that intellectual property should not be a barrier to ensuring a sustainable supply of medically acceptable darunavir in the world’s poorest countries.”

Darunavir administeredwith ritonavir and in combination with other antiretrovirals is currently indicated for highly treatment-experienced HIV patients (third-line) in SSA and has been recommended by the World Health Organization[2]. It is also included in several national HIV treatment guidelines in SSA for use with highly treatment-experienced patients. Janssen recognizes that, as more patients fail their initial treatment regimens due to HIV drug resistance in SSA and LDCs, demand and uptake of darunavir will only grow.

Under this policy Janssen will not enforce its darunavir patent rights, provided the generic versions of darunavir produced or supplied by generic manufacturers are quality, medically acceptable, and used only in the defined territory. Manufacturers are still responsible for obtaining permissions from other darunavir patent holders and health authorities where appropriate.

Janssen will continue to ensure the availability and appropriate use of PREZISTA® in SSA and LDCs through its existing licensing agreement and partnerships.

Skype Launches Contest to Give Teachers Classroom Technology

SOURCE:Justmeans

DESCRIPTION:

A few months back, one of Allison Holland's students at Riverside Intermediate School in Plymouth, Ind., wrote Shaquille O'Neal asking for an autograph. But instead of an autograph, the student received the 7 foot 1 inch former NBA superstar himself, who met with the student and the rest of his classmates through a video call with technology provided by Skype.

The video call was part of Skype's education program, called "Skype in the classroom," which helps create learning experiences for students around the world using Skype's video conferencing technology. This week, Skype announced a new contest as part of the program called Santa in the Classroom. The contest gives teachers a chance to win $10,000 to purchase new technology and a Skype call with Santa Claus for their classes.

Launched in March, 2011, Skype in the classroom brings celebrities and explorers, researchers and athletes into classrooms around the world. "Using Skype, the kids get really excited!" said Holland. "When the call comes in and they can see people's faces, everyone just yells in excitement. But after that, they always stay quiet in absolute wonderment. To get a full room of grade school kids completely silent and engaged...it's incredible."

From Fragile to Resilient: Libor to RSF Prime

In 2009, RSF Social Finance implemented an innovative alternative to Libor

SOURCE:RSF Social Finance

DESCRIPTION:

by Don Shaffer

Let’s recognize the historic opportunity we have to change the current culture of money!

We know, for example, that big banks like Barclays pushed the adoption of Libor over another benchmark—a comparatively simple cost-of-funds index that many observers now say was better for borrowers and much less volatile. The switch was made for one reason: to increase short-term profits for the banks. The foundation of trust in Wall Street has been completely undermined as a result of this and other recent scandals.

Based on our core principles, RSF is taking small steps to create a fundamental transformation in the way the world works with money. A great example is RSF Prime. We developed RSF Prime to create community among the participants in our flagship loan fund, the RSF Social Investment Fund.

For many years, we based our investors’ return rate on the 13-week U.S. Treasury Bill. Each quarter we recalibrated the rate based on this well-publicized benchmark. In 2006, we shifted to Libor because it represented the most commonly accepted barometer for short-term interest rates worldwide.

But as the first wave of the financial crisis unfolded in 2008, we became increasingly uncomfortable with this approach. We realized that pricing to meet the needs of our stakeholders could most productively be determined by the community of stakeholders itself. So we began hosting face-to-face meetings at our offices in San Francisco with representatives of the three stakeholder groups of our RSF Social Investment Fund: investors, borrowers and RSF staff. In October 2009, we adopted a customized interest rate collaboratively recommended by these stakeholders each quarter. We dubbed this new base rate for borrowers “RSF Prime”.

We believe this is the first time that a lending institution has facilitated meetings between investors and borrowers to determine loan pricing. With RSF staff at the table facilitating the conversations, all three stakeholders are visible to each other and engage in a direct and transparent exchange to understand intentions, motivations, and needs. We feel that other financial institutions such as community banks and credit unions have similar stakeholder groups that could be engaged in this way.

The loan-pricing meeting is one step towards modeling a more resilient financial system. At its heart is building community, which RSF also holds in how it works with borrowers by bringing them together to share wisdom and resources, and in its innovative grantmaking through Shared Gifting. A web of trusting relationships and a spirit of collaboration are foundational to a resilient economy. We have observed that by bringing all the stakeholders together, there is more engagement, fulfillment, and accountability.

Just as an organic or biodynamic farm relies on far fewer external inputs than a conventional farm, we are eliminating our reliance on Wall Street rate-setting, going “off-the-grid” as much as possible, so that we can be more resilient based on the strength of our investor-borrower community.

We invite you to share other ideas with us—either suggestions for what we can do at RSF, or ways you think other institutions can change to make our financial system more transparent and trustworthy. You can ask your bank about how they set their interest rates, for example.

Ultimately, we have to “be the change”, as Gandhi said. In our view, energy spent modeling a new way of working with money will have much more positive, transformative, and long-term effects than trying to change the existing system from within through regulation.

Let us know what you think!

Don Shaffer is President & CEO at RSF Social Finance.

DESCRIPTION:

The Solar Foundation (TSF), an independent nonprofit solar education and research organization, has released the full version of its third annual National Solar Jobs Census at the Interstate Renewable Energy Council's Clean Energy Workforce Education Conference. The census found that more than 8,500 installation jobs were created in the past year, and continued industry wide growth is expected in 2013.

In early November, TSF announced that the Census found that the U.S. solar industry now employs 119,016 Americans, a figure which represents the addition of 13,872 workers and a 13.2 percent employment growth rate over the previous year. Since 2010, employment in the U.S. solar industry has grown 27 percent, or eight times faster than the overall economy during the same period when employment grew by 3.2 percent.

The complete report analyzes employment in the subsectors that make up the solar industry. Installation remained the largest subsector in terms of employment and added the most new jobs. Installers now employ 57,177 Americans, a 17.5 percent increase over the revised 2011 figure. Sales and distribution jobs experienced a 23.1 percent increase, now employing 16,005 Americans.

Thoughts on Internet Freedom

SOURCE:Video4Good

DESCRIPTION:

In a 2012 COMMIT!Forum  interview with Video4Good, the Cato Institute's Jim Harper shared some thoughts about internet freedom.

According to Harper, internet freedom is an issue that is important to everyone. Harper warns against ongoing attacks on digital freedom and cautions that most corporations and governments view internet freedom antagonistically. As the fight for digital freedom continues, citizens must take personal responsibility for protecting their internet rights and demand it of the companies they do business with.

Back to the Future: When a Classic Car Goes Electric!

$

by Felice Gasperoni, journalist at RTBF Belgium

SOURCE:FedEx Corporation

SUMMARY:

The thing is, I may be a science and technology enthusiast, but I’m far from being an expert in electric motors, batteries and automotive electronics! That’s the reason why I proposed my idea to the University of Brussels, more specifically to the electro-mechanical department of the Polytechnic School. And luckily enough, my proposal was accepted and two students were eventually chosen to carry out this work for their master thesis!

DESCRIPTION:

I am the happy owner of a classic car: a 1973 Fiat 500, the car that most represents the Italian economic and social boom of the 1950s. The Fiat 500 is actually the first car I’ve ever driven, back when I was only 12 years old, on private roads of course!

The problem with my Fiat 500 was that in the last years it spent more time taking dust and rust in the darkness of my cold and wet garage than happily driving on the road. Being someone particularly mindful when it comes to squandering resources, I thought that my little car deserved to have a new usefulness.

Being also a science journalist and technology enthusiast, I had the idea of converting my little Fiat 500 to electricity and, thanks to my profession, of using it as a communication tool to raise awareness of the broad public on sustainable mobility issues.

Let’s face the truth: technically speaking, the conversion of a petrol car to electric propulsion is not very difficult, and you can find many DIY examples on the web. Nevertheless, our approach is, let’s say, more scientific: the students are applying a very strict methodology and they need to take into consideration all the possible issues before starting the actual conversion. For example, they need to make a theoretical model of the car: its original performance, its aerodynamics, its weight distribution, its handling, etc. Then, they have to calculate the necessary power to accelerate and cruise at different speeds and on different slopes, in order to have a good driving experience in urban traffic. This step will allow them to determine the characteristics of the electric motor. Then, in order to make this motor work properly and have a range of approximately 100km, they need to calculate the size and power of the battery pack: big enough to reach the pre-established performance and range, but small enough to fit in the small Fiat 500, both in terms of weight and volume of course! What a challenge…

The many DIY conversion that can be found on the web look more like MacGyverisms than research projects: some take motors from dismantled elevators or fork-lifts, others get their lead acid batteries from golf karts. For our Fiat 500, we aim at using high-end technological components, such as switched reluctance motors, lithium iron phosphate batteries, high-tech electronic controllers, and so on. Don’t ask me how all these work, I just know they’re very energy efficient and reliable!

You are now maybe asking yourselves: who will pay for all this? As you know, universities aren’t very rich. So I made a commitment with the students: I promised I would find enough sponsors to finance the acquisition of the various components, or to find technical partners willing to provide them for free. Just for the sake of science and sustainability!

I had the idea of asking an international carrier company to help us with the various shipments of the components coming from abroad, and I selected the one that had the most extensive policy in terms of sustainable development. That’s when I discovered that FedEx was the leader in this field, far ahead of all the other carriers. And that’s when I met great people that immediately accepted to help us!

The project is currently at the end of its first, theoretical phase, and we look forward to choosing the components, buying or receiving them and then testing them in the labs before integrating them in the car. Our adventure has just begun!

Getting Started in the Working World: New HP/Public Sector Collaboration for Tunisia’s Youth

DESCRIPTION:

By Michael_Thacker

What do young adults need to get started in the working world? An important collaboration, investing USD 3.3 million in support of Tunisia’s youth (announced in November 2012), believes that young people today need increased access to better-quality services designed to support young entrepreneurs by providing them with a foundational education, services and mentorship. Young adults also need job opportunities, which can be best achieved through supporting direct capacity-building for enterprises with high employment potential.

Ambitious aims such as these require collaboration between the private and public sectors.  HP is proud to offer this support to the young people of Tunisia in a new collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the US Agency for International Development (USAID), and the government of Italy (Tunisia’s neighbor, seeking shared prosperity as partners in the Union for the Mediterranean).

HP’s Vice President of Sustainability and Social Innovation, Gabi Zedlmayer, says the multi-million dollar private/public sector collaboration should “equip young people in Tunisia with relevant entrepreneurship skills to help create much needed new jobs”. The project focuses on the HP Learning Initiative for Entrepreneurs (HP LIFE) program, which recently expanded to offer all of its IT and entrepreneurial training courses online. As Tunisia maintains political and commercial links with other Arabic and French-speaking countries, the potential also exists for HP LIFE to expand into new geographies through this collaboration.
